For anyone who it may help, the fitting which comes standard on these pumps is a 1/4" SAE flare fitting. If it isn't this it'll be a 3/8" SAE flare fitting. Some pumps have both. To covert it to normal air fittings (BSP or NPT depending on where you live) requires first a 1/4" SAE swivel connector followed by a 1/4" SAE Male to 1/4" (BSP or NPT) Female fitting; then a 1/4" (BSP or NPT) Male to 10mm barb fitting. The final fitting is a standard air hose fitting available from the hardware store, the first two need to be sourced online or from a refrigerant/ LPG gas fittings store. Additional parts can be used as desired to allow further control of the vacuum.
I'll look into this.. yes I have both 1/4 and 3/8 on one pump and the smaller pump has just the 1/4. I've heard it said by a pump repairer that it's best to release the load on the pump before turning it off. I believe it's because turning them off under load can force the vanes to push the other way which isn't good for the pump.. thanks for this video.. it shows what can be done with them. I have a cps Vg200 digital vac guage for use on a split system aircon evacuation.
The flare fittings at the bottom don't use thread sealant because the seal is made by the flare. I couldn't see any sealant on the flare to pipe thread adapter that goes into the bottom of the 4 way fitting though. If that bottom fitting is what I think it is (a short piece of copper pipe) I would add some additional support for that assembly to keep stress off of the copper flare. Digital refrigeration vacuum gauges are cool. You can see mine in my Hobbit House 10 heat pump video. It was about $150 but I think there are decent ones available for less. They measure in microns.

rinao i bouthg the same one got it today when you opened the red fill port did you notice rust? i have some rust on the threads and the black part at the bottom im going to try to carefully remove it vacumm it up.. kinda ticks me off spent 50 bucks and its rusted if i added fluid id prolly comtaminate the thing i might break it down and clean it that way not sure though

actually the thing that it comes with doesn't really do any one way valve stuff from what I've measured with my vacuum gauge, I just stuck a 3/8ths inch nipple on it and some 3/8th inch brass fittings and it works fine
I just noticed that the nipple where the pressure weight goes has about the same size thread as a vacuum guage. The other chamber has no chance of catastrophic failure, atmospheric pressure is only 15 psi but you're probably going to need a much better vacuum pump if you want to make a crooks tube. If you do make one remember that it emits X ray radiation and cathode ray tube TV sets had about an inch thick heavily leaded glass to make them safe for humans to be around.
Ha, the only thing I did not add to mine are the two valves you have. I might need to borrow that idea. Mine originally used 1/4 compression fittings, but I recently learned to braze and ended up brazing all all the connections so it is nice, sealed, and rigid.

Just got the VEVOR AC 12 CFM cousin to this vacuum pump and it has two inlets perpendicular to each other. The top one is 11.1mm (7/16") inverted flare that looks like NPT but isn't tapered, and the second one pointing sideways is 12.5mm (1/4") ACME with thick threads. For the life of me, I cannot find a single F-F converter from 7/16 inverted flare to 3/4 NPT for the pressure gauge. I want so badly to angle grind this thing off. lol.

Hey there! Just thought I'd drop a comment. I believe that that valve is meant to float up and seal when oil enters that section. I just replaced that fitting with a simple barbed one, and after a while of sitting with vacuum, oil tends to creep out.
3:06 What are those for fittings ?? this is not a 1/4AG it looks like the thread starts out a little smaller and at some point becomes a 1/4 thread in the middle and maybe even a little bigger at the end. That confuses me a bit because I've never seen such a thread before. I'm in the process of rebuilding your setup. the fitting you put first in line from the pump uses a flare to seal so it doesn't need tape...all of the others do...it looks like you didn't put any tape on the bottom of the galvanized 4 way fitting...that would cause the leak...
I put a valve directly on the pump inlet as I don't think the pump will keep the pressure when switched off. So I should be able, after closing the valve, to see the current vacuum on the meter.
Great video. I have two thoughts. I see a sight glass on the end of the pump that appears to be empty, does it need more oil? Also, it would be really cool if you could do an experiment with using the vacuum to boil water and see if you can get effective refrigeration out of it using water as your refrigerant.
It(Filter) probably cost a few hundred to make at most. Most components are deceptively cheap to make. As for the pressure vessels collapsing, the Pressure cooker would be fine as it is a pressure vessel. The filter vessel would also likely be fine. I've used stainless steel pots with 5mm of Plexiglas as vacuum chambers when expunging air bubbles from plaster molds using a similarly sized vacuum pump. And not good pots either, cheap-ass Walmart pots. Even oil drums can withstand holding a vacuum, until you give them a good, solid whack, at which point the crumple like a aluminium can.
Got the exact pump from eBay with 3 gallon vacuumed pot! it come covered in oil wiped it down spent 2 days finding oil! refilled it between low and high marks . plugged it in it burnt up instantly!!!!! I’m guessing from all the oil that got in the electric motor

no issues with tubes yet, but id stay away from clear tubing that is too thin. if you struggle to pinch it all the way shut with your fingers at the middle, i figure its probably good enough.
The bottom HVAC fitting has a taper, which is the sealing surface; no need for teflon tape on a tapered fitting like JIC or o-ring fittings, only for NPT pipe threads.
@@skycarl Teflon tape is a lubricant, not a stabilizer or locking mechanism. This is its primary purpose. with lubrication, it can seal tighter since the surfaces can glide past each other more easily (tighter but movable fit). It tightness and lack of motion is the need, one should use plumber's caulk (Pipe dope??) which hardens once the seal is achieved.
To tight nuts, fitting, allways use two adjustable spanners Fittings are to big as you say I made mine with all 1/4, brass and coppper, without valves to avoid leaks, its hard to achive. Thanks for the video Dom

There's no risk of damage, these kind of pumps are designed to be able to run for extended periods of time. The cheaper models tend to run a fair bit hotter than the more expensive ones.
Hey mate ! Do you remember what is the type of male conenctor on this vacuum pump ? And what was the one you managed to find to fit it. I'm having issues properly connecting the pump to my project and having purchased the wrong connections once, i'd love some owner insight ! I though it was 1/4 bsp but it is not, and now i'm not sure if it is 7/16" UNF or 1/4" r134a, etc.... I really hope you can help me, it's making me crazy ! ;)
What you are looking at is used mostly for gas line some times water connections ( take the part removed from pump with you if you have a HD or Lowe’s they will be in that department they look like they are 1/2” thread and most are fine thread but see where your galvanized pipe is course thread always use pipe tape will save you from taking apart to re do it latter hope this helps you out

You wouldn’t want to pass the liquid through the pump, but it could be used to suck liquids as long as the liquid ended up in a large chamber. You would need to make sure the pump would never accidentally suck up liquid
You would need a jar with 2 holes in the lid to capture the water so that the pump only sucks air. Also consider that this kind of pump tends to generate an oil mist when running close to atmospheric pressure so you may want to put a filter on the output to keep from breathing the oil cloud.
Electron microscopes require an extremely high vacuum, much higher than your pump can provide. You need a fine quality 2 stage lab mechanical vacuum pump, backed by a diffusion or turbo. Also if that container was used to hold oil, or if there is any presence of oil, that will spoil your vacuum due to outagssing, not allowing you to reach pressures below .001 torr.

In order to get small wavelengths electrons are accelerated in an electric field (10kv up to 200kv) How are you going to prepare the samples that will be used in the microscope?

I’m way late to the party haha, But you could have gone with your original plan. The little one way valve that you discovered is only a safety so you don’t suck all of your oil if your vac pump loses power while pulling the vacuum. It is not necessary
I saw something similar at my old job in some massive transformer station thing and it had some oily substance we couldn't quite identify it had a greenish hue to it and it had it's own odor to it maybe it was something like that , that's just my uneducated guess though haha
It resembles the sea water strainer I maintained while in the NAVY. Yours looks to be missing the strainer sleeve. And being stainless steal, I would guess it was for food stuffs. When the strainer starts to get full the pressure gauge will read higher.

Alex Zariczny not really any tips, i really lucked out with getting crappy ones for such a low price. if a honda works fine, 650 is normally the price they can go for. but thats like if they look brand new. the best bet is to keep an eye out for ones that arent for sale, like if you see one by a barn or something. they might just want to get rid of it. the person i got my extra hondas was in the business of collecting scrap from farms.

Atmospheric pressure is only 14.7 PSI so, even if you brought a chamber all the way down to 0 (a total vacuum, which would be near impossible), that's only a difference of 14.7 PSI. Just think about inflating something to 29.4 PSI. That would be the SAME pressure differential and 29.4 is even less than car tires and way less than bicycle tires. I wouldn't be too worried about being hurt by that tank. Even many glass jars can handle the pressure difference.
OHH you're right! Sorry. I didn't take into consideration that a certain part might easily be pushed one way but not the other. If you had a container that had perfectly uniform walls and no ports, it SHOULD be the same strength in the positive or negative.

The little window thing, is a pressure relief valve. If the pressure cooker pressure gets to high, the valve pops keeping the cooker from blowing up.

that plug is not a window, but is for emergency to prevent the cooker from exploding from too much pressure/heat..

You'l need your teflon tape on all the threads in the system to hold vacuum or pressure.

Besides sealing for air tightness,, the tape also helps hold the threads from working loose from movement and vibration.

yes that pump can do it. It is commonly used for creating vacuum in even bigger refrigirant units and machines

You wouldn’t want to pass the liquid through the pump, but it could be used to suck liquids as long as the liquid ended up in a large chamber. You would need to make sure the pump would never accidentally suck up liquid
You would need a jar with 2 holes in the lid to capture the water so that the pump only sucks air. Also consider that this kind of pump tends to generate an oil mist when running close to atmospheric pressure so you may want to put a filter on the output to keep from breathing the oil cloud.

Electron microscopes require an extremely high vacuum, much higher than your pump can provide. You need a fine quality 2 stage lab mechanical vacuum pump, backed by a diffusion or turbo. Also if that container was used to hold oil, or if there is any presence of oil, that will spoil your vacuum due to outagssing, not allowing you to reach pressures below .001 torr.

You're going to need quite a vacuum, for a condenser lens and aperture. And maybe a second vacuum for the specimen chamber.

idk, oil barrels cant handle -4psi but can handle 90psi.

How are you going to accelerate the primary electrons? The lower the asociated wavelength, the bigger the resolution of the scope. In order to get small wavelengths electrons are accelerated in an electric field (10kv up to 200kv)

Yes it's possible but a bit annoying since it doesn't have a port for that and it because it generates an oil mist.

Its output does not confine the gas, so it only is good for a vacuum pump

But you could have gone with your original plan. The little one way valve that you discovered is only a safety so you don’t suck all of your oil if your vac pump loses power while pulling the vacuum.

no fucking clue, not even sure if the liquid in it was oil. it doesnt smell like anything i've ever come across.
I saw something similar at my old job in some massive transformer station thing and it had some oily substance we couldn't quite identify it had a greenish hue to it and it had it's own odor to it maybe it was something like that , that's just my uneducated guess though haha
It resembles the sea water strainer I maintained while in the NAVY. Yours looks to be missing the strainer sleeve. And being stainless steal, I would guess it was for food stuffs. When the strainer starts to get full the pressure gauge will read higher.

not really any tips, i really lucked out with getting crappy ones for such a low price. if a honda works fine, 650 is normally the price they can go for. but thats like if they look brand new.
the best bet is to keep an eye out for ones that arent for sale, like if you see one by a barn or something. they might just want to get rid of it. the person i got my extra hondas was in the business of collecting scrap from farms.

Atmospheric pressure is only 14.7 PSI so, even if you brought a chamber all the way down to 0 (a total vacuum, which would be near impossible), that's only a difference of 14.7 PSI. Just think about inflating something to 29.4 PSI. That would be the SAME pressure differential and 29.4 is even less than car tires and way less than bicycle tires. I wouldn't be too worried about being hurt by that tank. Even many glass jars can handle the pressure difference.

OHH you're right! Sorry. I didn't take into consideration that a certain part might easily be pushed one way but not the other. If you had a container that had perfectly uniform walls and no ports, it SHOULD be the same strength in the positive or negative.
