When you order oil I recommend you order lots. Changing oil often is the key to making your pump last a long time.

Nice video! I didn't have high expectations after talk about negative pressures in the beginning. But then you went on to share relevant and valid information, as far as I can tell, and made some enjoyable and relevant demonstrations. As far as I understand it, all common units of pressure are technically describing difference, and the question when they are used is if it refers to absolute vacuum, ambient air, standard atmospheric pressure, or something else. And even if that pump doesn't produce high grade vacuum, it's still well in the range where absolute pressure is the relevant reference, and not so much the difference compared to ambient.
Anyhow, I got curious, is water vapor much worse than alcohol vapor for the pump, and how bad is either? I was under the impression that alcohol tends to be more "aggressive", and unpredictable, and also tends to break down into other stuff, commonly mostly acetic acid and water initially, in presence of oxygen.

I get it. Negative pressures are a lot like grounds in electronic circuits. In electronics a ground is a relative term. You can split a positive 12 volt supply and decide that the +6v level is your zero and then you have a relative +/-6V supply. I do realize that there is no actual negative pressure. Zero pressure is when the molecules/atoms quit bouncing off of one another and no longer transfer momentums. This can either be at absolute zero or when you have a complete vacuum.
I really appreciate your comment and I should be very careful in my descriptions.

@@DudleyToolwright Maybe I came across a bit critical, I'm sorry if that's the case. I don't think even that detail was so bad that you should give it much thought.
I also think the comparison to voltage is really good.

I might get one of these, been wanting to try out making some gas discharge tubes and Geiger Muller tubes for a while, and my crappy brake bleeder hand pump just ain't cutting it

I am not sure how good a vacuum you need, but most tubes scavenge the left over gasses with a getter. You should look into those as well.

We just got ours for freeze drying food storage. It's helpful to hear your comments comparing it to the other pump to know what is common to vacuum pumps. Your chamber looks like it might not be flat on the bottom, as it wobbles? Ours came with a dent on the side by the bottom seam, but holds vacuum just fine. Another reviewer thought the silicone mat might be for the inside bottom of the chamber to keep something from getting vacuum stuck to the bottom...? Loved your experiments! 💯👍

Thanks for the feedback and comments. I think you might be right about the silicone mat.

Haha the same reason I decided to buy one. I already placed an order for 3 gallon and 4cfm which was the biggest available in my country.
So anyway, how do you chill the pot? Peltier modules? I plan on hooking then to ground water and cascading to cheaply reach -80c.

great review! thanks! do you know if this pump has an automatic switch that will turn off the pump once it reaches the maximum vacuum force? or the pump will be on untill you manually turn it off?

I got a couple of VEVOR vac pots and a still intending to boil birch sap at a temp below 150 F. That will put out a lot of water vapor. What should I do with all that hot water to protect the pump? Can I run it for hours on end to remove gallons of water?

That would be a trick. I could have added some funny content there. Missed the opportunity.

This looks like a standard pump for auto ac work that I've used many times if so most auto stores that carry pumps also carry pump oil your other unit may require a special oil but id bet this unit is the same as the units at auto stores and harbor freight and can probably use the same oils they carry for their pumps may be worth checking out if you need oil and can't wait for shipping 👍👍👍
