Le Mans in the 80's - Early years of Group-C (Assetto Corsa)

  • Le Mans early 80's, 55 cars on the grid. Group-C, C2 and a couple of Group-5 cars.
Brands: ADA, Lola, Jaguar, Dome, Lancia, Porsche, Rondeau, Mazda, Harrier, Grid S1, Sauber, Sthemo, URD, WM Peugeot, EMKA, Nimrod Aston Martin, Alba.
Short (as in not 24 hours) recreation of the early Group-C as a basic introduction of my new series, with a comedic ending. Most of the liveries and cars are accurate for that period.
    I'm driving the yellow 1982 Lola T610.
Enjoy the sounds and visuals (especially on the unrestricted Hunaudières straight!).
In 1982 the Group-5 and 6 and the ACO's GTP was replaced with Group-C.
Instead of limiting the engine, the fuel consumption was limited. This turned out to be a big success and many manufacturers turned up. Each with their own idea of how to ballance top speed, acceleration, downforce, drag and reliability with the lowest fuel consumption possible.
The races were at least 1.000 km, or 6 hours, and at most 24 hours.
In 1983 the Group-C2 (or C-Junior) was introduced. These cars were restricted even more, but lighter. The engines had to be homologated Group-A or B based. This was to decrease the costs for privateers and small manufacturers.
Group-C officially ended in 1993, since Bernie Ecclestone, Max Mosely and Jean-Marie Ballestre changed the rules in 1989, which basically stated that the engines had to be based on F1 engines and the total minimum weight was lower, resulting in expensive engines and materials.
The new rules became active in 1991. Only the major manufacturers could afford to race in the now expensive Group-C formula, which was completely against the spirit of the original rules. The new cars however, were spectacular nonetheless.
The older cars had many penalties like intake restrictors, extra weight, slower refueling and were set back at the starting grid, resulting in fuel shortage, extra wear and a lack of reliability.
Mazda however, loopholed the new regulations and won the 1991 24 hours of Le Mans.
There was a lot of resistance to the new rules from both spectators and manufacturers, but for some reason, the FIA didn't stop the obvious downfall from happening. Something they would repeat in the near future.
After 1992 the remaining manufacturers moved to F1, which was the plan behind the new rules, where Bernie Ecclestone, Max Mosely and Jean-Marie Ballestre collectied extra F1 television revenue. Nobody entered the 1993 season.
In 1994, Porsche took revenge by winning the 24 hours of Le Mans with a GT1 car, which was a road legal (homologated by Dauer) Porsche 962 Group-C car.
Basically a 12 year old concept!

Great video you made there, Hubertus! It was nostalgic seeing all those classic cars and liveries. Oops, number 4 caused the accident and got away with it! 😜😜👍👍

That is not humorous when it is you behind the wheel of the car that got stuck on track by way of two other cars! Lol! That Lola T610 has an amazing exhaust note 🎵 Nice were you running 3rd then battling for 4th or 5th? Must be some really high resolution because my tablet couldn't focus on anything... Lol! :-)

Chucking cars at an opponent is an interesting tactic and very effective but somewhat unsportsmanlike, LOL!
The exhaust note is from the 4-litre Cosworth DFL V8 engine, which was used in a lot of cars in F1 and endurance. It's pretty accurate and makes it a joy to listen to when racing :)
Not sure what position i was in. This was just a test and i turned off track positions. The crash seemed like a nice ending so i left it at that.
There are some unfocussed effects during certain replay settings. It looks nice but i'm not sure if it adds anything, it doesn't look authentic.

@@2stroke4me Very cool test and no I don't approve of such tactics in racing, now in fun with friends I have been known to dive inside on a turn if they left the door open and use your buddy as brakes... Lol! But hey that's what friends are for :-D Enjoy brother looks like great fun. I love the sound of that engine and Honda had a F1 engine that could turn 20,000rpm it sang a very sweet song nothing like the tirds of today... Lol!

Those graphics are insane I love the experimental cars

The graphics sure are for an old game, but i'm looking into the settings to make them even better. Those cars looked insane back then, and because of the looks, the sounds and the excitement, it quickly became popular among manufacturers, drivers and an ever growing amount of spectators.
I'm probably biased by nostalgia, but Group-C has in my opinion never been surpassed in terms of simplicity, beauty and raw power.
Thanks for watching brother, and have a great weekend!

Every so often I have to remind myself how lucky I was to see these cars racing in person back when they were new!

@@marks7197 I know what you mean, although i followed it on TV, which sadly were mostly reruns. The Le Mans races were usually live though.
Ever since i had access to the internet i discovered that a lot of these cars still exist, were restored to their original state and used in classic races. Even one Peugeot 905 was taken out of the museum, restored and sold to an enthusiast.
