On 4th and short (5 or shorter) we would all line up at the punt formation and sit down, but would wait to get the hands on the ground.
Then the defense would line up against it, our center (not the upback) would yell "DOWN!!" and we would touch the grass.
This... ALWAYS drew them offsides and we would get a free first down.
In the huddle we would call this "steal 5" because it's just stealing 5 yards.
Similarly on defense, we would make it a habit to sometimes, as a whole D-line, "go on first sound". So on the first sound out of the QB's mouth we would all make a short drop downwards by bending the arm just a bit - this whole movement often brought one of the o-linemen or TE to a false start.
Also, as a defender I would tell the 'key' word of a QB to the QB of my team. Some teams we played had 'shoot' or 'go' or 'hip' instead of 'hut'. So our QB would use that word to draw the defense offside (that practices against their own QB all the time).
As you can tell, we sucked at football, but we were playing it like Jedi.

I like it! Keep the other team on their toes! We use the hand snap on 4th down and field goal as well. Works about 90% of the time! And always works the first time of the game

@@evalios8137 no, but line up for a punt without putting your hand on the ground. Then have the upback yell "whooot!" Or "down" and have all the linemen/blockers put their hands down. If its 4th and short, this should steal a first down once a game.

This is the kind of vid I’ve been looking for on this subject. I just played football in elementary and middle school and we always just had the standard “down, set, hut” or sometimes on two “hut hut,” and I’ve always wondered about how they do it at higher levels. There aren’t any other videos on TH-cam as in depth as this one went, so I appreciate that. I find cadences fascinating.

My high school team uses color number to say the snap count because we were a hurry up team. It would be something like blue 18. The first digit of the number was the snap count. That was always the case unless it was red. If the qb said red, the number that would follow is the read defender and it was always on 1

I thought Manning used Omaha to audible, to flip the play to the other side. Omaha = Opposite

      From Manning in March 2017:
"Omaha was just a indicator word... It was a trigger word that meant we had changed the play, there was low time on the clock and the ball needed to be snapped right now to kind of let my offensive lineman know that 'Hey, we'd gone to Plan B, there's low time on the clock.' It's a rhythmic three-syllable word, 'O-ma-ha, set hut.'"
