@@LadySymphora They can give excellent reasons for the purchase. Anyways there is no opposition who can stop them from doing it. This is a democratically decided political system of one party domination system. The people decided it this way. This is the double edged sword of democracy. A people might be able to democratically vote for abolishment of elections also and get the Constitution changed. I really believe so. I am not saying that's the case. I am just believe this is possible. Yes, it would be a big joke if so but technically that's a democratic decision. Double edged sword. Democracy is only as clever or stupid as the people who made the decision. How can Majority of the people anywhere be wiser than the wisest who are always a small number?
The flaw of democracy. Trump and Taiwan are the main blacksheeps of democracy. Many are now supporting Authoritarianism because of this black sheep . The people ignore the many decent democracies like those in Japan and Europe and Australia.
To the main topic, they ok to buy submarine. What's no OK is such money has not been spent on MRI machines or dialysis machines. These costly medical items are very beneficial to citizens but where is the money ? If only one submarine worth of money is used to subsidise patients to pay for MRI or dialysis. The world would be a better place. The people essentially made themselves powerless. This is a democratic decision. Again this elaborates what I mean by democracy is a double edged sword. Its only as good as the wisdom the people have or dun have.

Many refute that it is useless because Singapore is too small, I can only say these people probably had not serve or are too coward to serve their NS duties and know nothing about sovereignty. Of course there are the FTs that are here too under the defence umbrella but they do pay taxes as well, so for those who says these weapons are for the defence of the FTs do think again. And who can be sure that the FTs will not stand up for Singapore more so than the citizens when the needs are called? @@arrowstheorem1881 What does this mean to you ""One submarine could be enough to pay for 100 dialysis machines?"" in your own words. Deep in your thoughts you already give away your true feelings towards this and other policies. What makes you think in the healthcare budget they did not set aside funds to acquire the extra dialysis machines as and when required? If you or any of your friends had worked in the finance field that deals with budget and forecast , they will understand how hard it is to strike a balance for an organization's growth and expansion let alone a nation where defence is utmost important in order to ensure the safety of our sovereignty. i am from the Merdeka generation and have relatives and friends who are survival of the Japanese occupation during the second world war and also experienced the ethnic riots, we are very aware of Singapore's vulnerability.
By the way, you assumed too much and I have said in my previous reply: ''Nothing to refute if tax money putting to good defence for the nation....'' No where in my reply said it is wrong to point out that it is funded by tax payer's money, So if you want to make an accusation, substantiate with facts like I always do if I want to criticise the government or any policies that the evidence are there to refute.
To be very clear I am not a supporter of PAP and neither have I voted opposition in my precinct all these years because I have not seen their sincerity in wanting to do something good for the nation. I only believe in policies (be it any governing party) that yielded concrete results for the good of the citizens for many years to come. What i heard all these years at election rallies, opposition parties opposes the current government policies for the sake of opposing without providing sound alternatives that convince undecided voters to vote for change. Until the day the oppositions stay united as one party platform with a clear attainable ideology without disrupting the life of common citizens, then yes there is hope for change.

      This country is about deterrence.
Without state of the art mechanism , we will be irrelevant to deter aggression.
Deter who, we do not want to know, we dont wish it would happen as well. Just have to take a look at Trump, it is to deter the wrong kind of human / leadership as well, trigger happy individuals.
Apart from Pulau Ubin, i do not know of any places which doesnt upgrade its military might over time.
Military budgeting, unfortunately, is mandatory to safe guard a nation and its regional interest, be it cyber or on field.
Without military infrastructure, then why would we even need nations alliance? We would already been stamped flat before our closest allies reach our shore to assist and defend.
Dont worry, not many people are able to see big pictures, diff people diff walks of life. Nontheless, your conversation is funny.
As a chinese saying goes, “you can predict everything, but you cant predict human’s mind”

@@mclucky2216 It's ironic that Singapore students score highest in the world in maths and science, which are core foundations for technology and engineering , and yet no Singapore-born Singaporean can invent the greatest tech like Google, TH-cam, Tesla, the internet, 5G , Alibaba, tencent etc. This makes it Irrefutable that Academic Result is definitely not real world result. Academic result is useful but it almost guarantees that scholars are not the best for the job. They could be good but history has proven they are not the real deal. I am not saying NOL. I am saying facts which to anyone proud of Singapore may feel offended. But being a honest person, I cannot help but speak the truth which does not have to please anyone.
To elaborate, if academic result equals real world performance, all the greatest inventions would have come from Singapore scholars. Some may mistaken my words. I am saying any country can have inventions. This is a given. What I am saying is Academic result is a misleading indicator for real world performance. Sg scholars should have invented all the best weapons we are paying an arm and a leg to USA and Israel if academic result equals real world performance. So can any scholar refute me? If you can I will accept.
Note also that many inventions recently highlighted in the news mention foreigner involvement. Many from China. It's good they contribute. My point is about singapore-born talents who are scholars. Sim Mong Who is not a scholar. Again, supporting the notion that academic result is not equal to real world performance.

Why not you name just 1 scholar from Singapore who created anything as great as Google. Scholar, not sim mong hoo. He not scholar. And must be born locally in Singapore. There must be many. Come on. Your such a believer in scholar system. Steve Jobs and Bill gates are not scholars. Which Singapore scholar have higher achievements than them? The best talents in the world are rarely scholars.

@@arrowstheorem1881 YAWNNNnnnn those inventors of Google founders Larry Page & Sergey Brin, Facebook founder Eduardo Saverin et al are graduates of top universities in the US. and you said " but it almost GUARANTEES that scholars ARE NOT THE BEST for the job".
Academic qualifications does not mean one who have them will automatically succeed. But they show that they have the level of intelligence at managing, organizing, at running institutions and organisations. Professionals like lawyers, doctors, engineers, accountants all still required paper qualifications to do their job. Running your own business, businessmen and entrepreneurs dont need these academic qualification. Show me which countries in the world are run by poorly educated people and I show you a failed state.
