Great! Thanks for this- I've been trying to light my fire for ages- and this is really good!! Only thing you didn't say is why it's good to have a smoke-free fire- and what to do if there's smoke coming out.

I think the top down fire lighting method is better you just light it and leave it to do it's thing and there's no smoke

Ours is a stove and doesn't have any air control. I will try a variation of this though. Thank you.

Too much work dave trust me i hate doing this , get old candle wax melt it on newspaper screw them up put two inside under your normal wood with only a little kindling and up it goes soon as you light the wax close the door .most smoke enters house on start up ,cant beat the old candle on newspaper .learnt of an oldtimer.

Shouldn’t have that wood so close to stove can catch fire

Hey Dave, you're doing it wrong. The best way to get the fire to draw as soon as possible is to use 2 x firestarters - one halved in amongst the kindling and the other sitting on top of the baffle directly underneath the flue. Light this one a couple of minutes before lighting the 2 halves and your fire is guaranteed to draw from the get go thanks to the pre-warmed flue!
