Bodyman with 30 years experience here. Some tips for plastic bumper repair. First, welding is not the best repair method for any situation, for an amateur. I suspect that the rod is not the same plastic as the bumper. JB Weld is too rigid for that application and is very likely to crack. A semi-rigid plastic repair epoxy, which would be available from any body repair supplies jobber would be the best solution. I use Dominion Sure Seal but it may be Canadian only. Grind the inside, apply 2 layers of fiberglass drywall tape, semi rigid epoxy, with the tape embedded. Make sure that your repair extends at least 3 inches on either side of the crack. Grind outside, apply semi rigid epoxy, sand smooth, prime, paint.
If you're interested in getting the lower quarter panel closer to the proper shape, try taking out the back seat, inner trim panel. You might have access from the inside. I'm not sure if you will or not since I'm not familiar with the car, but it's worth a shot, because as with ALL fillers less is better. My max would be 1/16 but my standards aren't yours. it
^^^ THIS - I was about to write pretty much the same thing as this guy. That plastic weld is NOT going to stick to your bumper long-term, because it's a different kind of plastic. You need the same kind of plastic, and more importantly the same flexibility as the existing plastic. This is also why the J-B Weld is going to crack and break free.
It might look and paint up nice, but as soon as you have some cold/hot temperature fluctuations and/or big bumps, that bumper is going to split open again like an egg.

We've been repairing plastic bumper covers since 1981. It's all we do, and we make plastic welders. Plastic welding can repair pieces that 2-parts can't fix.
@@polyvance I've done both, do both, am an expert in ALL aspects of bodywork. If you're the expert you claim to be you should agree that welding plastics successfully for an amateur with the equipment he has just isn't going to happen. I gave him a method he can use with materials available cheaply. I did forget to mention that depending on the plastic he may need a can of polyolefin adhesion promoter. I've used my suggested method on literally thousands of bumper covers with ZERO problems. There are many ways to defur a feline my friend, and I know most of them.

He’s never claimed to be a mechanic, painter, or a 5 star auto body shop that churns out impeccable work for the masses. What he’s shown is how to get great f’n deals through auctions and along with some expected harshly learned lessons, anyone can turn their deal into a steal. The evolution if this mans channel gives anyone the template on how to organize/setup their own auto repair channel. But also on marketing yourself/channel to larger companies for money or products that you get to keep!
1. Anyone can make money reselling these auction vehicles. Also can ind cars for themselves that typically may not be financially possible.
2. How to run a youtube auto-repair channel and lessons learned for the DIY peeps.

I had the same problem but on the driver side of the rear fender. Mine was pretty mangled so I opted for getting a cut out of a donor car and butt welded that in. Lot faster, lot less filler and better looking final result. The donor part was only $45 from another totaled 911.Good luck! cant wait for the next video.

Great video Sam!! Doing the same work the other day with lots of studs. Grind it smooth, glass (its water proof and wont cause bubbling at a later date) it close and fill with filler that sands easily. Hope this helps. And thanks again for sharing.

Good work Sam. To pull dents i weld nails to the body and use a slide hammer with the end cut off and weld the end of the nail to the slide hammer and cut the nail off after pulling.

Love the tool. In situations where you can't get behind the panel to hammer and dolly, the slide hammer is probably best but you can also drill a hole in the side then push the damaged area out from behind. Or you can cut out the damage, hammer the section you cut out back to as close to normal as possible then weld it back in. Good luck, it's coming along great!

Love your channel and for the most part you do things properly.Here is a tip,bumpers that are cracked to an edge are a difficult to repair.Your repair will not last.A item you might want to look into for your bumper repairs is 3m panel bond.It is used for bonding body panels but works great on bumpers.It adheres well and is sandable.Cheers.
Sam you need a bigger slide hammer for that area of the car. The metal is really strong down there. I like the vise grip idea. I’ve had one of those for years. Works great. Keep up the good work. It’s fun watching people figure this stuff out. No one is born knowing this stuff. We’ve all got to learn the process.
I always use fiberglass fill for places where you can't get the pull as smooth. Do a few swipes with the fill and finish off with Bondo. I use the fill to fill enough to where you have to minimal sanding on it because the dust it makes you itch really bad and Bondo dust doesn't.

For body filler i recommnned the Evercoat Metal Glaze. I have been using it over 15 years and find it very easy to work with.
You should either weld or use your uni-spotter to fill the holes left behind from your rocker repair.You can use the uni spotter by tacking another nail on the hole,cutting it just above the stud with side cutters and then grinding flush.this will prevent moister from entering and causing your repair to fail..
Hey Sam the best thing for plastic repair is not to weld it but to actually glue it with an adhesive like 3m super fast or another that I can’t remember the name of on is for finishing on top like body fill but the other it for the back and you should cut a V notch in the crack for maximum penetration

Fill the large part of the dent with the green fibreglass and use a large surform rasp to reshape the fibreglass. After you reshape it with the rasp hit it with some 60 grit to knock down the rasp marks then hit it with some filler to feather it out and you should be good. Also, if you don't already know a good 2k high build primer acts like a skim coat of filler and really helps to feather out all of the repairs and imperfections
Anti Deep State i bet if he will follow your suggestion. Using fiberglass filler is way better than bondo. But knowing Mr.Crac he will take it negatively and do his own way and try to reason out it is much better. Although he is not good in doing this kind of diy. ✌️ always blame the tools he is using although he wants to buy cheap tools for diy.
When doing plastic repair, I typically stop-drill the cracks to prevent further cracking prior to filling the cracks.

hey sam spot a pin back over each hole that pulled out from pulling then clip off shaft with pliers then grind head till flat no more holes thats what i do at my shop i work at and for the crease dents use a washer grind a flat on it and use stud gun to weld the flat in crease then pull dent grind washer off and repeat till dent all gone well almost all gone or use 5 minute panel bond on head of a bolt let dry pull dent heat gun the panel bond pull bolt off and repeat gotta love a good dent the more you practice the better you get bro

Use your welder and fill in those holes and grind flat before adding your fill (I'd recommend the fiberglass filler for first coat, regular polyester after). The last thing you want is water getting behind the filler and into the the rocker.
I would use a fiberglass fill for the rocker panel. Fiber glass fill doesn’t hold moisture like regular body filler does so it won’t rust and is a bit stronger as well because of the fiberglass strands. For a rocker panel that could see plenty of rocks, pebbles, and other road debris kicking up, a stronger fiberglass filler would be a much better idea!
Lads - when/if you run out of the supplied mesh and plastic sticks, you can melt staples and paper clips into the piece you’re welding and also use used zip ties (new if you don’t care) for filler rod.
I usually fill cracks on the visible side with glue gun so I have somewhat stiff and good connection on the other. Then on the other side I go over the crack with small dremel to make more place for filling. After patching just remove the excess glue with sharp knife. That way there's way smoother surface that don't need so much filling.

With the rocker repair i would try to get in behind the rocker when your done if you can take some interior trim out and rustproof in there with all the burned holes from the stud welding its gunna need some protection on the backside where it burned through the e coat and finished metal. So some rust proof or cavity wax should do the trick. Then i suppose after u do ur bondo and all u can put some clear gravel guard since it looks like the lower rocker was gravel guarded then paint! Hope i gave some help! Keep up the great vids!

For next time if you use a heat gun to pre-melt the plastic it goes much faster. 3M also makes a really good plastic repair kit with a 2 part filler that IMO if done properly is better than melting but either way, done right works well. You can also use pieces of an old bumper and a heat gun or torch to build up that back of the bumper with some extra plastic.

practice makes perfect, year your stud welding and dent repair isn't the prettiest but you have to start somewhere. eventually you will master it if done enough. keep at it and keep sharing your great content!
I have that same Harbor Freight stud welder and slide hammer. The stud welder works fine once you get used to it, but the slide hammer is garbage. Mine stopped holding onto studs after a dozen or so small uses.
that jb weld gonna crac sam.. carc! Do a facelift bumper and lights after it does.
You should protect your condensors! As Porsche didn’t put protection in the bumper, they are really exposed ( I have the experimented with a 997). I had installed a mesh in the holes to protect them. Just like the rennline product.
If it's cracced Samcracs gonna uncracc it! Sam I have to give you a thumbs up for effort on making a modified slide hammer! You should find out what brand of stud gun & slidehammer that Arthur Tussik uses because his works pretty well! Thanks for the fun video!

Not bad for a first go. Get the mesh in as flush as possible then use the filler stick to completely cover the mesh for extra support from the mesh itself and the upper and lower layers of plastic fusing together.

When you cut cable ties, keep the off cut ends and use them for future plastic welding.
Nice job. I like the way you think Sam. You can do it all. Good old American ingenuity and self reliance. Any fool can go buy a new bumper, or pay someone to do body work.
I do not use a hard block sander on curved or raised surfaces. It will unevenly sand through the paint on the shorter radius outside curves while leaving the inside curves unsanded. You can use your hand, just make sure your fingers are perpendicular to the sanding motion.
Fiberglass fill Use short strand Bondo....Waterproof and very hard, great base for any bodywork project.

Use a fiberglass filler as a base layer. You can apply it thicker than body filler and it is water resistant. Then apply body filter on top to finish it out. For final finish use a glazing body filler for minor imperfections.
Great way to think on the fly! Not perfect, but gets the job done
Regular fill will absorb moisture thru the holes. Fiberglass reenforced will keep moisture out

Welded studs work much better when you weld 5 or 6 right next each other, then use a pinch weld clamp with a hydraulic pulling tool anchored somewhere. Slide hammers are only good for small dents
With all the welding and sanding are you going to paint the whole car or just what you need. Like the offset emoji also would like to thank you for the material you put out
Someone probably already added this but when you repair a crack like that use an appropriately sized drill bit to drill a hole at the end of the crack. That will definitely terminate any additional spreading in the future.
Let's all be honest, whether you like the way Mr. Crac did this repair or not, he is still better than a good third of the actual shops in the US.

Hey what's up where did you find the plastic weld kit. And next time you're grinding or welding make sure you cover your brake lines up so nothing gets inside of your lines
Next time, just remove the adjustment screw on the vise-grip, add a length of threaded rod the same size as pitch as the adjustment bolt. Add the hammer part, and double nut the end. Provided you don't have the means to make one on a lathe, which is how I made my own slide hammers. Sorry if this method has been mentioned. I didn't read all the comments. I enjoy the channel, though. Keep up the good work, Sam.

Take a scuff pad on the plastic bumper before priming. It takes away the little fuzzies that you see in the primer.
Can you link the slide hammer you mentioned ? I had the one from the discount parts store break on me
Those pins are a pita your better off using a spotter or a key system for pulling dents (eg. Flatliner)

just a thought. not sure jb weld is good to use on the bumper cover. jb weld doesn't flex very well. won't it crack or chunk off if something contacts that area? the cover flexes some what. weld doesn't!
robert coffin This! He should have used flexible filler. If he wanted to fill the crack he could have filled the crack with more plastic then sanded down the area and used a flexible filler. I also think he should have drilled the end of the crack to make sure it never comes back but that’s just me.
An old school trick I have heard of for sanding it to use a grill cleaning brick also known as stink rock.
i would use fiberglass filler on that just a light skim coat and then add body filler on top. fiberglass filler is just really a structural filler so where you had the stud gun and there are several little holes attempt to weld them up with a mig with shielding gas to keep your welds strong but also get them so moisture dont get in there. then with the fiberglass filler it should cover any tiny pinholes you cant see to really make sure it dont get moisture in. as i am going into the second semester on auto body and getting into paint it is really inportant to match as closely the wave the factory paint to the paint you are going to spray. pressure needs to have a constant and the quality paint gun it also good. i would personally recommend the 3m accuspray system it is a great paint gun to learn and it is easy to spray with in a controlled area. it is also very affordable to get.
