Definitely one of the great Italianate tenors of the last century. He still retained a youthful voice in this lovely piece. I would love to have heard the whole concert. However, many of us were rewarded when he appeared in the MET gala of the same year honoring Maestro James Levine replacing a seemingly ailing Luciano Pavarotti.
BRAVO! I was in attendance at this wonderful and beautiful recital of Carlo Bergonzi! It was a blessing from God to allow my wife and me to witness and experience such passionate and lovely singing.
Tenortalker Exactly! I heard his farewell at Covent Garden, and the sweetness and musicality of his singing that night will stay with me for ever. Bravo Carlo...quiet consummation have, and renowned be thy grave...
This is superb, gorgeous singing. He was the master of "line" in his singing. Such a seamless, continuous flow of effortlessly produced sound. And this concert was NOT the end of his singing career. He substituted for an indisposed Pavarotti at the Met James Levine Gala in 1996 and sang the I Lombardi trio and Luisa Miller aria.
For me, the greatest tenor of the last half of the 20th century. This is not meant to slight the other greats such as Tucker, del Monaco, Corelli, Krause, Vickers, Domingo, Carreras, Burrows and others I may have forgotten. Bergonzi joined a magnificent technique to an innately beautiful voice capable of stirring one's soul. The era would have been so much less without him.
Bravo. I was there and am amazed to see that someone taped this. Thank you. I first saw Bergonzi at the Met in 1959 and many times afterwards. What a wonderful singer.
Great to see. I'm sure this concert was a great occasion! CB was the first tenor that made an impact on me when I heard him sing the love duet from the Barbarolli Madam Butterfly with Scotto in my teens: 40 years ago. Seems like yesterday!
This he does better than most tenors in their prime beautiful singing fantastic pianist by the way Gigli was the king and is the King of this song forever
Excuse me, people - but this man was 72 years old, when he did that concert! I know no other singer, even of the very great legends, who could produce such vocal beauty at such an advanced age - and that includes Caballe and Kraus! I n c r e d i b i l e !!!! V i v a b e l c a n t o !!!!
The “fiato” or breathing comes only from the DIAPHRAGM, so he must have kept up with his breathing exercises throughout his lifetime, simply put. There is no magic, no secret about it, no two bones about it !!! Good job however. I really liked his Ramses !!!
The best VERDI TENOR STYLIST during the last third of the 20th Century. Not always the most sonorous or exciting in terms of voice alone & his tried OTELLO (even in a concert version) 3 year later
Emozionante!!
...when Bergonzi tried OTELLO (even in a concert version 3 years later) it was a sad way to round out a great career. Even in his best days this was never a role for him. Despite what he apparently said, “OTELLO does not need to be shouted, “ & indeed not! he may have had Del Monaco in mind here, but OTELLO still needs, albeit with lyric passages, a full COMMANDING timbre for at least 50% of the time & this Bergonzi was never able to provide & whoever convinced him to try this in 1999 did him no favors. He could not finish the performance & watching his dress rehearsal says why this was.
the three stooges, as you call them (such disrespect) did not perform as you say they did. Lucianno did the trill in "O Sole Mio" and Domingo and Carreras immitated him for laughs.
I was there! Unforgettable! I remember hanging on to every note.

You will always be remembered and loved, Carlo. RIP

I too first saw him at the Met in 1959. It was in AIDA, the first opera performance I ever attended. The Amneris was G.Simionato!
Bravissimo!!! One of the Best!!!!!!
Wow, this takes me back, I was there and remember that memorable evening very well.
Who could ever forget the great Carlo Bergonzi!
Tenortalker Exactly! I heard his farewell at Covent Garden, and the sweetness and musicality of his singing that night will stay with me for ever. Bravo Carlo...quiet consummation have, and renowned be thy grave...

W l'Italia ............... W il Cav. BERGONZI......
A really Verdi specialist
Those "others" never had this fan APPRECIATION!!!!
As I have stated elsewhere Bjorling,Bergonzi Schicff the rest stand on their shoulders.
So nice to see and hear this. Is that Eugene Kohn at the piano?
The high notes are never what maestro Bergonzi was best on. However, singing is not just for "high C". He was always one of best Verdi tenors.
....He was good in any note, in contradiction to some frantic applauded guys nowadays...
ci lasciava 5 anni fa, 90enne
When someone hands you your raincoat it really is time to go !
Have I ever able to purchase this full concert video?
I would like to know the Name of the Pianist, he is great!!!
He is Maestro Vincenzo Scalera?
Marinausbcn Yes, Scalera the best!
Marinausbcn yes, he’s Vincenzo Scalera (itali-American) .
Vincenzo Scalera

What does he say at 4:18?
My wife cries !
Such a lovable man. His farewell at Covent Garden moved me to my core!
The human apotheosis of lyricism!
Was it his last concert in carnegie?

No flamboyant gestures----just the real deal He sang at the concert for james levine and the others paled in comparison.
