- June Anderson and Ferruccio Furlanetto join Carlo Bergonzi (at age seventy-one, substituting for an absent Luciano Pavarotti) to sing a scene ("Qui posa il fianco") and trio ("Qual volutta trascorrere sento") from Act III of Verdi's I Lombardi alla prima crociata, conducted by James Levine, at the April 1996 gala celebrating Levine's 25th Anniversary at the Metropolitan Opera.

Great Verdi trio- 3 fabulous singers- BRAVO! ❤
Bergonzi''s success here is a triumph of old-school technique and stylistic understanding. That's why he was the paragon of Verdi tenors for decades.
I see admiration in June Anderson eyes for this great singer.
Very moving
Cannot imagine life without the immense pleasure of hearing Carlo singing Verdi
Magnificent hard to find a better trio
I like how Anderson and Furlanetto look at Bergonzi as soon as the music is over, and how the camera closes in on Bergonzi's nod of approval.
In Ciel t'attendo ... I truly hope so caríssimo Maestro Bergonzi ❣
Bergonzi was the Verdi tenor of the last half of the century. No one was a close second. This excerpt documents his artistry - the audience poured out their love for him in this and the Luisa Miller aria.
Bravo.
Excellent performance. June as usual sings beautiful. Bergonzi is outstanding and so Furlanetto. Bravo!!!!
I just realized that this was 13 yrs ago.... I remember watching this on tv.... It still feels like it only happened a few years ago.... Great, now I feel old.
RIP Carlo Bergonzi July 13, 1924 - July 25, 2014
He lived well reaching 90, and MAN! What a career! In this video he is 71 but he can still pull it off! The voice is still very much strong, full and rich.
Emotion !
Very moving to see him at that stage of his career still pouring out Verdi's line.
Verdi. Ringrazia
Grandissimo e stupendo Bergonzi
As a Verdi STYLIST, Bergonzi was the best tenor for Verdi during his prime period. Others, like Corelli, had more thrilling voices but in the right Lyric Spinto roles for his instrument (LUISA MILLER for example) Bergonzi was uniquely satisfying. In this excerpt he was in admirable form. This trio remains one of the glories of Verdi’s writing & as presented here a great performance indeed. Its really too bad that Bergonzi attempted OTELLO (he could not finish the performance apparently) in his 70s. Even in his best years it was not a role for his otherwise fine instrument, IMO. In this trio here he is in top late career form & he & his colleagues truly do honor to Verdi’s music.
The more I listen to this trio, the moree I love it....
Una delle più sublimi pagine verdiane. Io, credente, non posso ascoltarla senza commuovermi.
Bravo the violin soloist too!!
@@marycage7075 Raymond Gniewek, the great Met concertmaster for 43 years. He's just passed a few days shy of his 90th Birthday.
I love June Anderson what a beautiful soul emanates from that equally gorgeous face
Bravo 👏 all round
I replay this so often. In my view it is just one of the best operatic ensembles ever, and Bergonzi is sublime.
Brilliant thank you for posting this
Carlo going at it with perfect declamato like a lion 🦁 and all the blessings of an impeccable technique!!! The way he looks to the crowd like “I know. This is how it is done”. And of course the stunning Anderson and Furlanetto proudly looking at him, acknowledging his greatness!
Sent shivers down my spine 🤍 Thanks for sharing !
During her career, Miss Anderson performed with legends: Pavarotti, Kraus, Gedda, Bergonzi ... Lucky girl!
And Domingo, Carreras, and Horne, just to mention a few others
Wonderful thank you
Grazie.
The greatest of all Verdi tenors. Just sublime, and the cause of sublimity in all around him.
Once again & in his 70's, King Carlo has provided a lesson in how to put Verdi across. He was indeed a blessing!
Bravísimos June Anderson, Carlo Bergonzi y Ferruccio Furlanetto.
Carlo warmed up with Luisa Miller aria before this but did he ever deliver in this. And you have to love Anderson and Furlanetto too. This was one of the highlights of the evening.
The beautiful June Anderson seem to be inspired by Bergonzi to pay greater attention to line than usual, and to great effect.
Yet another golden thread of operatic history on U tube..
Bravo Bergonzi..bravo encore
At 71 Carlo Bergonzi still HAS IT, man!
Great performance!!!!! I Lombardi is perfect, my favorite Verdi Early operas!
Superb upload...thank you nickbigd! I always wonder why June Anderson did not get the acclaim due her. Such a wonderful, strong voice. And, as someone else said, Bergonzi was just his usual magnificent self. And at 71!!!
Anderson got plenty of acclaim. She was everywhere as a full lyric coloratura by 1982. Her prime was just before the PR excessive machines were in operation. Also she started to try to sing certain repertoire outside of the Bel Canto style and nobody really was that interested beyond Violetta/Gilda and a few French roles. Like here the voice is clean and nice but it’s color is too pale. Without the coloratura and agility things get dull as her tone is a bit boy soprano in the middle.
MAGNIFICOS
Arg.Buenos Aires
Una grande prestazione da un grande tenore. Uno dei miei preferiti tutti i tempi.
Bravo Carlo, Bravo
I love the look Bergonzi gives Levine at the very end. It seems to say, "See, I told you I could do it..."
Like "Hey Jim, who's old now?"
I see more the eternal Maestro that gives his approval to the "youngsters"
Elegante tre miti che cantano insieme
god that was music !!! even a slightly younger kraus with anderson in paris a few years back didnt pull it off as well as bergonzi does there a true legend
Furlanetto e' fantastico!
I am totally love Furlanetto's bass! He always has such great presence whatever performance he is doing. I am of the opinion that his interpretation of Filippo is the best.
maleficare i totally love you and your comment ❤️
When I spoke with him about his reputation as the foremost Verdi tenor of his era, he replied that whether that reputation was or was not deserved, the tenor whom he considered the greatest Verdi tenor was Giacomo Lauri-Volpi.
They didn't cut the orchestral introduction/violin solo - it's on the recording. It just didn't fit on youtube as a single clip. Maybe one of these days I will get around to adding it. It is beautiful as well.
Thank you
Grandios!
QUEL TRIO EXCEPTIONNEL.......!!!!! que dire de plus....... *******
Bravo Bergonzi
A trio that really is sort of a quartet! The concertmaster has a big solo as the introduction of the ensemble, and then is almost a descant during the "trio", to finally join in that magnificent crescendo finale! Early Verdi indeed - but egad: Genius!!!
Tutte le grandi¡¡¡¡
very good thanks!
Maestro Bergonzi- definetly the model prototype of Verdi singing.
ANTERIORMENTE MIRE ESTE TERSETTO POR PAVAROTTI, Y REALMENTE ME ENCANTO, PERO SIEMPRE SOSTENGO QUE LA VOZ DE BERGONZI ES COMPLETAMENTE DIFERENTE A LA DE PAVAROTTI, SIEMPRE ME GUSTO BERGONZI SALVO EN BUTERFLY, UN GRAN TENOR Y A LOS CASI 75 AÑOS ES UNA MARAVILLA, QUE TECNICA, QUE FRASEO, ES INCREIBLE...COMO LA ANDERSON LO MIRA ES CIERTO, NO LO PUEDE CREER, GRANDE BERGONZI,
Furlanetto el mejor Bajo de la historia !!!!
Bravo, Signore Bergonzi!
Absolutely gorgeous singing...bravi to all three! Thank you for posting this, nickbigd. BTW, anyone know how tall Furlanetto is? I know Anderson and Bergonzi aren't very tall but FF looks like a giant here (a very handsome one, I must add).
Sublime
perfect
♡
VIVA VERDI!!!!
June and Ferrucio are great, Carlo is OK, if we consider how old is he here allready.
Ferruccio perfetto
I'll double check, but there are numerous sources (wikipedia, grandi-tenoriDOTcom and movies2DOTnytimesDOTcom), that say July 1924.
About a month before he died he got it. It was Cavalliere di Gran Croce OMRI.
Pavarotti was supposed to sing this but could not make it because he was ill. Bergonzi filled in for him and he was really great, as was Anderson and Furlanetto. And they cut out Raymond Gniewek's great violin solo too.
Superb contributions from all; Bergonzi aged quite gracefully and sang great here except maybe the final note was a touch flat :| lovely though
Bravo
@singinginachurch Thanks! That sounds right.
Love Pav but would rather hear Bergonzi any time, such character in his voice. All three did fabulously well. I like when you have such well schooled singers that you can see and hear what they are doing technically with their voices. For all three, you are able to see and hear many lines where they produce the voice without complete and pronounced movement of the outer mouth. In this, they create the voice first and sustain it and then place the syllables into this established vocal line. GOLD
From which opera is this beautiful trio? Enhanced by three extraordinary singers?
Fucking fantastic
What about the singing ?
to me, this is Verdi's first true verdian ensemble
@perpieta He`s almost as tall as Placido Domingo, on an average. And Domingo`s about six foot if one isnt wrong.
Che classe, che morbidezza di suoni...
TRIPUDIO TOTALE. 👏👏👏👏👏
Merveille.
They're too awed to get close to him!
Where was Luciano Pavarotti that night?
I don't recall. He was definitely supposed to do this piece because the Met's recording with him, Anderson and Levine conducting was set to be (and was) released in '97
solid technique plus good luck, and not taking on roles before vocally ready= Bergonzi, same advice he gives to students-some listen and some are too impatient! My heavens he is a short man. He stood in line extra long when they handed out voices, missed out on the height line!Furlanetto's entrance here is scary-his voice just takes ones breath away!!!Wonderful posting
Very beautiful ! The singers of the "old school" have a real culture and an wonderful expression for this music ...but they use too many portamento for my ear
Pavarotti before he died too
Bergonzi was way past his prime in this. However, for his age it wasn't too bad. The last note was very flat..........Anderson was great as always. Just calling a spade a spade, so no hater's.
Larry Woods Quite a bitchy comment. Can’t you just enjoy the musicianship and sense of style?
Richard C
Good god, he wasn’t being bitchy but honest. You on the other hand, well...
Also, Where did he say he didn’t enjoy the video? Seems to me he did enjoy it despite the obvious vocal problems and flaws. He also specifically said he didn’t want negative comments from people but I guess you just couldn’t help yourself. He says something honest and you say something deprecating. Did it make you feel superior?
I don't think anyone would dispute he was past his prime but you can still sense how great he was when he was in his prime. You Tube enables one to discover many fine tenors and you wonder why they never became really famous. One of the answers is Bergonzi.
ahahahahahah....fai ridere
Ah Carlo. So round and yet so flat.
