It’s a stupid sitcom about the worst people on earth, and then out of the blue they drop this. It’s totally beautiful, it’s heartbreaking. It’s perfect.
I like that part of the message is that even the worst people on earth have a level of trauma and a side of themselves that they feel like they have to hide, and it causes a lot of pain.

Idk wtf happened...i remember when this first came out on FX I believe when I was in middle school, I loved it even had the first two seasons on DVD. The 2nd being when Danny DeVito came in....and now 13 seasons? Holy shit. Even other favs of mine don't have that many seasons, like Charmed only has 8...anyway love this show, and I need to catch up lol

What hits me the most is the reactions from the prisoners, that they’re more drawn into it and supportive of Mac than his own father and they don’t even know him
Supportive or not. Was besides the point of why the prisoners cheered. They cheered cause it was a great show.
@@chrisreid5745 No. they got it. You can see on their faces. A similar scene to compare to is when Andy Dufresne plays _The Marriage of Figaro_ for the prison. They may not know the piece, but they can recognize the art. Prisoners are still humans, and humans can recognize art and transcendence. The hearts of mankind can soar when they are allowed to.

@@roguishpaladin in way, similar to what red said. It may not know what it is or means and some may not be just like Mac. But for those few moments of beauty and what is meant to be said, those prisoners felt free, seeing in themselves, seeing from another person's point of view on life and how they feel about their own. It makes them think about their own life about how they still have wishes that can be positive and while the world and society isn't very predictable or understandable, they felt free and have a bit of a growing light of life they they start to remember and think of for those couple of minutes. I may be sayong too much or overthinking, but it very much so that the prisoners loved the show, but also love and understand the message, of self, love, life, fear, losing hope a lot. And that scene from Shawshank is one of the perfect and wonderful examples to think of, especially in a prison setting, wheither or not they completely understand it.
This can resonate with anyone. Those inner turmoils, the fear of falling short, seeking forgiveness of self for past Shame or things taught to us about ourselves to be shameful or less than….but to hear it’s ok and I get it….is powerful. If anyone could understand that, it can be some of the incarcerated.
I'm still in awe of how beautifully out of place this scene was to the rest of the entire series. It's literally breathtaking.
I was sobbing like an actual child when it aired, like I was so caught off guard I was breathless.
Before this, the most emotional scene in the show's history was probably Dennis describing his "God hole"
"Out of place" is correct. Shouldn't have been in the show. Even if the scene on its own has merits in the context of the show and characters it's completely unfitting.

Mac's dad walking away and Mac still finishing the dance is so powerful. Even if the people who are supposed to love you fail at giving you the love you deserve you must keep the show going. You still should be proud of yourself and shine

one of the most heartbreaking things about this scene, is that mac’s dad easily could’ve gotten up and left at anytime, but he deliberately waited until mac could see him. he wanted mac to see that he didn’t accept him, and made eye contact with him before leaving
Even worse, that part seemed planned by Mac as well. He knew his dad would walk out, but still did all of it for one last ray of hope.

Everyone is bummed the whole gang wasn't there, but it's better for just Frank to be there, because he ultimately became Mac's true father figure. This wasn't for Mac's dad, this was for Frank.

They probably added that sound bite in post production. It probably wasn't recorded realtime. They couldn't have bodymics or boom mics because they would risk them getting wet. But yes it works great. Very touching and emotional scene. I never thought I'd say that about this show.

What makes this even more heart wrenching is that the play continuing even after Mac’s dad leaves heavily implies that Mac was expecting his rejection
More so implies that the second half is meant to make Frank (his replacement father) understand.

I may be missing something, but it seems like your comment implies that Mac's father leaving was a planned part of the performance...? I get that it was obviously scripted in the show, but I don't think that's what either of us meant. To my perception, in-world, there was always more to the planned performance, Luther just happened to leave when he did.
Or - processing as I type - did you mean that the fact that Mac continued the performance after Luther departed, suggests that he expected his rejection? Okay, that makes more sense, but still I feel (and am grateful/hopeful) that he would choose to complete the expression regardless (if only with encouragement from "God (f)")

Mac's dance is also brilliant because it's a great example of playing on our expectations. Previously in the show, dance has been portrayed as a major form of self-delusion -- see The Gang at the high school reunion, or Dennis listlessly watching them all do their signature moves at the end of S12. We're trained to expect it to go horribly wrong, for it to be over-the-top, and the rest of the episode reinforces this expectation by having Frank and the others take the broadest possible interpretation of gayness. Instead...what Mac does is beautiful. He makes his pain external. Frank and a room of hardened convicts are moved to tears and a standing ovation. And if someone as shallow as Mac can have this kind of pain, and someone as shallow as Frank can be moved...then we understand the pain others have struggled with so much better, and we have hope for those who seem like they will never understand. It's a beautiful argument not only for tolerance but for art itself, creation as a form of expression. And in the end, the joke's on us for expecting a joke.

you're so right, and i'm over a year late to your comment but this is the perfect explanation of how it feels to watch this scene. equally expecting a punch line and praying there isn't one and it just makes the whole scene even more impactful because of what we THINK is going to happen.

Something I think makes this scene so consuming and atmospheric is how much you can hear. The heavy breaths and grunts, the slapping and sliding of their skin together, the pattering of their footsteps, and of course the splashing water.
Truly stunning and insane that it came from a show like Always Sunny
Fully agreed. They picked some excellent music to go with it, and it was a piece that allowed you to still hear the dancers. I think that goes a long way in making you feel like you were watching the performance right next to Devito. Brings more power to it.
I guarantee they found some performance almost exactly like this and just copied it, but yea, lets pretend.

This scene really shows us that Mac could have been so much more if he had grown up in a healthy, supportive family.

This and Charlie screaming "You were supposed to carry me" while sobbing over his dad's corpse will always just ruin me so hard. This will always be one of my favorite TV shows.
I feel like this was the first time devito REALLY got to work his acting chops in the show. Obviously the whole show he puts on a phenomenal performance. But this is another level. Props to its always sunny for doing what they've always done: taking it too far in the best ways.
In just 5 minutes he conveyed so much emotion with just glances, facial expressions and a few words. I’ve always liked Danny DeVito and the roles he plays, but this episode made me absolutely love his acting.
That last expression when he says: I get it. Woah.

Mac's dad wasn't always there for him. Being in and out of prison and Mac thinking they went around to other people's homes to collect his Christmas presents was beyond messed up. All he wanted was his dad's unconditional love but yet again in this turning point in his life his dad wasn't there. However this didn't deter him to dance and finally be himself. Frank has his flaws for sure but he stayed in that moment. He was more of a proud, supportive dad than Luther could ever be. Hats off to all involved in this moving piece of artistry.
He is so underrated anyways! Not just as an actor (what a great Batman villain he was!), but he also gave us Gattaca or Pulp Fiction. It's a shame he has no auto biography. I'd love to meet him, he is such a sweet guy!

Hey, Different Strokes had an episode about child molesting. Really though this kind of stuff doesn't belong in IASIP. The show's been going downhill and this scene is just it falling off the cliff. It's totally out of place in IASIP, it's not something Mac would do or would happen in their universe. I get that it's PC and the SJW critics will lap it up but I miss them joking about kids getting molested.
Jason Allen that's such a mindless thing to say, just reading that made me dumber. Saying this doesnt fit makes you a bandwagon fan, not a true day 1 fan watching these characters evolve for 13 years, this scene was very climactic and i applaude for the character Mac finally telling his father.
Jason Allen It really says something about yourself when the world's worst group of friends undergoing positive character developments (by the hands of the show's own original writers, no less) is what you're so uppity about. Rob has every right to move Mac in whatever direction he wants, in the same way that Dennis was given his own moment of poignancy at the end of last season because Glenn wanted Dennis to go out on a responsible and positive note in case he sincerely never intended to return. You don't get to dictate for anyone what Mac would do because he's not your character and It's Always Sunny is not your show.
It's always people like you who go on clips of It's Always Sunny, Rick and Morty, Fight Club, South Park, and countless other "edgy" media and say, "Dur hur this isn't made for SJWs!" The reality is it's not made for people like you, because God forbid anything ever be more than just people making child molestation and dead baby and rape jokes. God forbid any personal growth occurs. I honestly pity you.
Jason Allen I also believe that they created this scene not for anyone to 'lap it up' yet to reiterate the artistic integrity of the show, whether the scene is comedic or not. This is what happens in life, things grow and change, people have new experiences. I've always thought the cast of this show has expressed their talents in various scenes since the first season. Singing and dancing has been an integral part of this show, this is not out of the norm other than the cinematography of the scene.

BTW this is totally something Mac would do because this is the idealized version of himself in his head, they just decided to give it a more serious tone because Rob wanted LGBTQ fans to know that he genuinely appreciates their support instead of making them feel like Mac being gay is nothing more than a joke.
The female counterpart was amazing... she was his motivation to keep going and the comfort when he was lost. I almost felt like she symbolized another aspect of himself in the piece.
In the episode, there's a moment where he tries to explain his feelings (which ends up being realized in the form of the dance itself). He describes the woman with him as representing God. So on another level it's like his interpretation of God staying with him and comforting him even if he feels at odds with being with God. At least, that's my interpretation.
I love that! I was also picturing how realizing and accepting his sexuality allowed him to respect women more, to uplift them rather than hide behind them.
@@aj7952 yeah i definitely noticed the first half had a lot of sexual movements which had mac roughly yanking her around... like he's trying to prove something to her and himself but ultimately harming both. and then the second half their movements are much more collaborative and graceful. Rather than using god and women as his shield from himself, her grace at the turning point of the piece allows him to find peace with himself, with women, and with god.

Having read how kind and genuine Devito is in real life, that first cut to him is like a gut-punch in a show that prides itself on going as low as it can. He's always pushing boundaries in Always Sunny but that one two-second moment hits harder than anything else.

I can't tell you how many time I've tried to pause the exact moment of that look which is so powerful, but it just isn't there... the whole arc of that glance is worth an award of its own. What a journey.

Honestly, it came across as a bit “on the nose” to me. I know these issues are important to Rob but come on, man. Over a decade of crazy, bed pooping nonsense then all of the sudden this super serious....SUPER SERIOUS scene? I’m not saying the show shouldn’t try and spread out a bit but this was just super jarring and weird to me. Frank? The guy who can barely muster the intellect to remember Mac’s name, the guy who raves about liberal yahoos, the guy who roots around in the trash and cuts his toe nails with a butter knife...he’s the one who gets the art house, super emo, Emmy moment zoom in? It just makes zero sense within the context of the “sunny universe”.

Brandon Steele I thought the same thing. He’s capable (as I think they all are, and have proven) of mature and dynamic thoughts/lifestyle. But after putting on airs for 30 years, decided he would much rather live in filth because it was more fun. Obviously a lot of thought goes into the development of a character (as well as what goes into each episode) much of which is left unspoken and thus open to interpretation. Personally, I love this episode, and loved seeing this side of Frank.

I loved that too. I could just feel him saying see him, please see your son for the first time give him the acceptance he needs and deserves. He is rooting for Mac in the most heartbreaking way.
The look of disappointment in his eyes as Mac’s father leaves is so real. As if he was silently begging him to love his son, if only for a moment. Frank doesn’t get mac’s homosexuality, but at the end he sees Mac and it breaks his heart that he has had to feel this way for so long, that Mac just wants to be free and so much of the world acts as a cage.

I love scenes like this. They show that the Gang are broken, damaged humans instead of just comedic punching bags (though they are that, too). This show takes its characters/character development seriously when it wants to.
This scene is proof that just because people are broken, it doesn't mean they are not beautiful.

@@notadumbname5339the entire Ireland arc shows how good of an actor Charlie Day is, I always hear everyone talking abt the breakdown scene but no one brings up how well he portrayed hidden joy in the one scene where he first meets his day. Right after his dad tells him he’s his dad, Charlie responds with, “Dad!” in the short moment the look on Charlie’s face is such a believable joy and you can see his left eye is wet cause he was so happy his eyes were watering

For real. Very intense scene.
It's both emotional and comedy genius on an almost meta level. It's the perfect anti-joke. And what makes it so beautiful is that it is played 100% straight, and it delivers a huge emotional gut punch. And I love the fact that the dance isn't just a "Pretentious dance that is supposed to have deeper meaning, but it's so ambiguous that its inadvertently hilarious" - It has a megaton of deeper meaning, every movement is perfectly choreographed to communicate something about Mac's character, his relationship to his own sexuality, to women, to men, to his father. It's what people say when a performance just feels "real". And the fact that we get this from Always Sunny is one of the best jokes in modern television. You can't help but be impressed.

@@camelat7228I took it as entirely about his relationship with God in terms of his sexuality. Either holding her above everyone else like a burden, fighting with/making her fight him or throwing her away completely. And yet she keeps coming back every time with forgiveness. And it's not until he learns to accept that she's always going to be there that he learns to accept her as a mother and as his creator.
Let me just add that one of the MANY beautiful parts of this scene was that Luther, Mac's "real" father didn't accept him or even get what he was trying to say BUT Frank finally got it. Frank has been his unofficial father since he came on the show and his acceptance was equally important to Mac. The gain of a father, in the absence of one. This was remarkable. Sunny is ahead of its time. I fear it will never fully be appreciated for the creative genius that is is now and has been since the beginning.
The ones who do appreciate it is all that matters.

SRS Art Productions I’m a fan of The Office, great show! However, it’s a different kind of comedy so it can be hard to compare but it’s always sunny just seems to have a bit more “genius” to it and is simply amazing. I would of course take always sunny over the office. But love both. It’s always sunny and Seinfeld are simply gold.. each achieving things for the their time that many other sitcoms/shows simply don’t come close to or wish they did 😃

I don't know if I'm projecting, but Danny's face here just killed me. It's not just that Frank "gets it" before he says he does, but I feel like it's Danny putting every feeling about difficult families and internal pain into it.

I saw this as 3 stories. The first sequence the woman represents a woman and Mac is trying to find a way to be with a woman the way society deems normal. But it doesnt work. That's why there's so much pulling away and it ends with them separated and Mac appearing frustrated. Like saying "Dad I tried, but this isn't who I am. Do you get it?"
His father leaves. Then she becomes an image of himself and it's a battle of accepting who he is and the dance gradually becomes more harmonized ending with him proudly hoisting her up showing off who he is and declaring it to the world. Then comes the terror of that acceptance.
At that point he fears what does this mean for my relationship with God. She becomes his messenger and the light above signifies that he's still loved.

Wow, that's a really good analysis for the visual story telling in the scene. I understand the first part the same. Where Mac is struggling to be with a women and his fustration for not being synced with her. The second part I totally missed but in the end I understood the acceptance he was longing for but I forgot about the religious undertone of the scene. Man, this scene has so many layers and I think only 12 words were spoken in 5 minutes.
I also think the ending is more tragic. Even though he has acceptance and love from God he is still struggling with who he is. At the end he is more vulnerable then he was in the beginning of the scene and theres strength in that, but he doesn't seem happy. He looks lost and still struggling with who he is and that's an absolute tragedy that people go through this everyday. To try and fit in socially, religiously, with family and other realtionships. Not being able to be who you truly are. And this idea goes farther than sexual orientation, this can be any fear or insecurities that we have that holds us back. Idk I'm just rambling.

This scene is so powerful and beautiful. I’m so glad Rob wanted to include this in the show. Especially with Rob’s own history with LGBT (his mom and two brothers are gay), so, for those wondering, it’s understandable why Rob would want it in the show.

Some might disagree with me, I dunno if this is a popular or unpopular opinion, but his acting in Batman Returns was great. That movie, the cinematography, I never realized how good it was until I saw it recently. I think it was a really odd movie, and not a great plot, but everything else about it was great. Watch it in 2018 and it's even more interesting, his whole character could be mistaken for a dozen politicians off the top of my head.

At first, I thought "oh boy, another musical/theatrical scene" so I was prepared for the laughs that were to come along, but no laughs. What I wasn't prepared for was the FEELS.
I was so glad when there wasn't a cutaway indicating that Mac was just yelling drunk on the stage. I think it was earned, too - he worked hard for this, unlike anything he had ever worked for ever before.

I love how in character this is for both of them. Mac loves musical theatre, Frank loves high art. A intensely artistic dance performance would obviously be one of the only things that could get through to him.

I feel like Frank is impulsive and unpredictable but he also has the most heart. As in he's able to immerse himself emotionally in things. He's like a Dionysian character. Unpredictable, irresponsible, intoxicated and potentially dangerous but also pretty open minded to experiences. It makes his character very likeable.
Haha, I don't know if I can say Frank has the most heart. He might be the most heartless of them all, giving Dennis a run for his money.
I might actually go the other way and suggest that by intentionally picking Frank, the least likely to win over with a dance performance, to be there and react that way helps offer extra support to the strength of the performance.

He is completely naked and receptive. He is like this high and rich guy who should be completely fullfilled by life! But inside. He's still a chaotic and sensitive soul that wants to feel something genuine and raw and something real outside of all the upper class fake manners he had to adopt as he got rich! And when he sees Mac dancing and expressing himself like that. He sees something that wants to break out and be free! Just like him! And he gets it! Charlie is more childlike. He's loveable. But he doesn't quite have that depth to him.
I think Frank and Charlie contrast each other nicely. Frank absolutely is very passionate, and open to experiences. The problem is that he's on the other side of the hill, and a lifetime of shitty decisions and people letting you down changes a person. He's self-involved, mercenary, callous, yes. But he's also easy-going, up for a good time, desperate for companionship. It's Always Sunny works because these loathsome people are still rounded characters with a fullness of experience that somehow manages to be both narratively satisfying, and also very true to life. Uncharacteristically for a ridiculous comedy, the characters are what keep it grounded. That's why it works.
13 years of watching IASIP and this blew my mind. The character development, the year Rob Mcelhenney dedicated to one scene, the balls it took to go completely rogue is simply amazing.
Nailed it man. This scene came out of nowhere and smashed me other the head with emotion, unexpectedly, and holy shit, thats actually ROB, the CREATOR, pulling all this off. Fucking Bravo.

I almost damn near wept. hahaha. And no, it wasnt coming out that was rogue...it was a freaking masterfully choreographed, symbolic ballet performed by Mac on IASIP. Totally unexpected and it worked. Guy worked harder for one scene than most work for anything in their lives.
She is his sexuality. 0:28 his sexuality is his cross to bear, a part of himself that is a burden to be carried never to be embraced. Throughout part 1 he struggles with his sexuality. At the end he rejects her, and he and the piece of himself he has rejected are both dying.
Beginning part 2, she approaches him and he is ready to be destroyed by her, but instead discovers that the thing he was sure would destroy him instead lifts him up, and he learns to recognize and embrace the piece of himself. 3:49 He becomes a champion of this cross he was sure would crush him.
In the end, although there is great pain in this admittance, he finds salvation in accepting his sexuality.
The way you used the word champion is very on point. He champions his sexuality, his love of god and his in a slight way, his love for woman. Good job on wording this.

I watch this scene all the time, and one thing I've never really noticed. When Mac's dad leaves and he just starts panting and crying, I always read that as part of the choreography. Dunno why? But that little bit of emotion you can read from his face around 2:40. He's genuinely surprised when the other dancer keeps going. And she literally pulls him out of his depression to keep expressing who he is.

For the sake of the actual show, yes, that part was probably choreographed, but in the scene, it's hard to say for sure one way or the other.
She's supposed to represent God or mac's faith in God (earlier in the episode he mentions a dream where God was a woman.) So it makes sense for his faith to push him further and at the end she tells him it's okay to me signifying mac's acceptance of his sexuality which was often at odds with his religion.
Frank crying is what gets me, like the expression "i get it" could mean a lot of things, my interpretation is that it is the showrunners way of telling us that despite how much they clown on art they still see it as meaningful and beautiful

I have watched this show for 13 years. This was the most spectacular, beautiful scene on this show. It proves once and for all the depth and intelligence behind IASIP. Unbelievable.
The whole thirteenth season was trash. This was the best scene of the whole season, and it was so out of place. Ok, we get it, MAC struggles with accepting his sexual identity and finally does. It's not that profound.
It sucked. Rob has hijacked the show so all of you can have your vapid backpats and tears. I don't blame Howerton for wanting out. This isn't Sunny, and McElhenny disrespects his own creation to alter it so hard. I'll never pay his projects a dime again.

Yeah, you are missing everything. It's about letting go of your pain and being free to show who you are, something millions of us can strongly relate to and have struggled with for years. Mac as a character has been neglected, abused, he's denied his sexuality, his father is a convict. His whole life he has had no direction, no sense of self or purpose, and here for the first time he's expressing himself fully. If you don't get it, either you've had a very privileged life or you're in denial yourself.

The first time I actually understood the power of dance as a form of self expression. Easily on
e of the most moving tv moments ever.... and from Sunny of all places!
This show is praised for it's raunchy, "don't care" approach to comedy; but it's things like this that really opens your eyes to how amazing these actors and this show is. I really love the fact that through all the pokes and jabs that the gang has made towards Mac being gay, that in the this finale Charlie, Glen, and Rob made the decision to show the seriousness and emotion that Mac has been going through for several seasons. It sends a really powerful message and, as I stated earlier, how amazing this show is.
The whole episode is about Mac coming out to his dad. In the middle of the dance, Mac’s father leaves, but Frank stays, and Mac keeps going. At the very end Mac’s father still doesn’t understand him, but Frank does. Because Frank stayed. Early in the show’s run, Mac’s father gives up on having a relationship with Mac. Frank, however, stayed with Mac and the gang.
This episode finally reveals that Mac’s dad, his true father-figure, is Frank, the man who stood by him all these years.
Frank wanted to be Mac’s and Charlie’s father figure since the beginning if I’m not mistaking, he even said to them lol

All of us who have watched this show from the beginning seeing Macs character develop this is probably one of the most incredible scenes of television you’ve ever watched. On its own it’s perfect but with the previous 13 seasons of context, it’s indescribable
Being a Sunny fan brings on some conflicting feelings for me. On one hand, I love to watch the gang get up to their insane antics.
On the other hand, I want to see them grow and develop into their best selves, because under their rotten exteriors they are caring people (I mean that really goes for everyone).
However, these characters growing would mean they put the insanity of Paddy’s Pub behind them, ending the driving force of entertainment behind the show.
This is honestly one of the most powerful and emotional scenes in any tv show I’ve ever seen. It breaks my heart that Mac’s dad waited until Mac saw him to leave. Him crying on stage and continuing on with the dance just proves how strong of a person Mac is. If that would’ve happened to me I would’ve ran off stage in tears. The choreography is phenomenal and just really emphasizes the importance of the moment and the dance. The first time I watched this I was in tears, just go powerful and emotional. Frank crying at the end of the dance saying “I get it” really tugs on my heartstrings. That’s the moment Frank became Mac’s father. Just absolutely fantastic

I think what really hits me in this scene is the awestruck faces of the inmates as the dance occurs. Goes to show you that everyone, even seemingly hardened inmates, can be impacted by art and emotion.

Welp, The Gang definitely doesn’t need to desperately try to win an award. If this episode doesn’t get the Gang an Emmy then nothing ever will. This performance was definitely an award for the audience that have stuck by the show to see the absolute brilliance Rob McElhenney puts into his work.

It may sound weird but when I watched this episode I didn't expect this scene to be as beautiful as it was. I'm a very sceptical person and I usually don't take anything serious but this dance legit made me cry and it was unexpected, but it touched me on a profound level and like I said it was very unexpected but it made me feel less alone.

Completely and totally floored. After thirteen years, never did I think that Sunny would bring me to the verge of tears in the space of five minutes. Just brilliant.
Ben Sparks the end of The Gang Goes to Hell part 2 always makes me cry. When Mac says “let’s go be with the gang” and they hold hands while they drown.
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia managed to pull off something quite extraordinary and unexpected in season 13. You see, it's been building for a few seasons now that the character Mac is gay, his father is a hardcore alpha male in prison who doesn't know and always hated his son, so through the last few seasons Mac has been struggling with his identity, overcompensating, living in fantasy, gaining weight, losing weight... until he finally decides to come out to his dad, and winds up doing so in what is absolutely brilliant and moving... never thought I'd cry watching an episode of Always Sunny, but there you have it... it was amazing.
I ask all my friends to watch this scene, and perhaps it will ignite compassion, love and understanding in your heart, or simply like with me, confirm how you always felt... that we are all human, deserving of love, patience, and grace.
An Emmy award worthy ending to a great season.

This is quite possibly the most heartfelt and touching scene in the 21st century of television. The fact that it came from a show about a gaggle of dirtbags doing everything comedically deplorable only illustrates the persistent genius of the cast, the crew, and the showrunners. I genuinely welled up and wanted to cry when I first watched this by the time that Frank finally finds his means to "get it", and he depicted his beautiful comprehension tuned too perfect.
A tremendous applause to Rob and his dancing partner, along with DeVito, for gifting us a true screen treasure.
It’s somehow beautifully fitting that such an iconic show, that’s 13 seasons in, when most others are either long gone or gasping on fumes, manages to pull off something like this. The sheer artistry of it transcends most shows nowadays, drama or comedy. Plus, jacked Mac can GET IT

Tbh this really shocked me cuz I didn't think that this show was capable of creating a moment like this. I was expecting the prisoners and his dad to call him a queer and laugh it off as they went to their cells.

They also sold to Boko Haram. Frank tried to defend them by saying that they didn't do 911, they're just killing other Africans. As Dennis said, there's only one thing you don't come back from, and that's banging kids.
i was cringing so hard before it started. I was so sure Mac was gonna make a fool out of himself and sink further into his miserable hang-ups like they all do every time they almost make it out. Did NOT see that coming!

This is the same show in which an episode ends with frank tricks Dennis and Dee into going to the graveyard to DIG UP THEIR DEAD MOTHER. Mac’s dad has closed off episodes telling Mac that he doesn’t love him and another in which he threatens to kill Mac. Another episode is about Dee having success in comedy and appearing on the Tonight Show and thinking that her dreams are about to come true, only to reveal that it was all a ruse cooked up by the gang and that all her success was scripted. And then they laugh at her for being the butt of the joke again and for believing their ruse.
An ending like what was described by the OP is not only keeping consistent with the characters and show, but probably not even that high on the “how fucked up is this?” scale of his show lol

I cried...Sunny made me cry...and not from laughter like it usually does. This dance and Frank’s reaction was beautiful.
This is the most un-sunny moment of the last 13 years. It’s also the most watched scene by me ever. I don’t ever want the sunny characters to grow as people but this scene will go down in Sunny lore❤️
Mac struggles with the idea that God wants him to love women and reproduce, this is why God is a woman and he has this storm inside him. God initially rejects him because that's what he expects, just as in this scene his father rejects him, but after this we see a turn. God raises his fist, in this case his foot, to smite Mac, but instead embraces him and lifts him up. Now we see a unity between Mac and God, God accept Mac and Mac accepts God while at the same time accepting who he is. Near the end they go to opposite ends of the stage, but God eventually rushes back to Mac, showing that no matter how far apart they may go they will always be connected. Mac will always be loved by God, and now has a father in the physical realm who understands and loves him more than his shitty biological father ever could: Frank.
Moving, poignant, a display of fantastic artistic ability in multiple forms. It's Always Sunny decided to end this season on a strange, unexpected, but extremely high note.

The way Mac’s dad waits until he’s looking at him, and then stands up to leave, just so Mac knows he won’t ever accept him… This scene is so heartbreaking. Always Sunny manages to balance its humour with scenes like these where you cant help but feel for these characters. Genius writing and I can’t wait to see where they take Mac’s character next.
