I have had my urostomy since 1955. Over the last 53 years I had numerous embarrassing moments. I want to tell you about the worst one. Ok picture this...I am sitting in an auditorium ( filled with 300 other students ) taking my pediatric final exam for nursing school. I was one of the first done with my exam, but I looked down and noticed my bag had leaked. The chair and I were soaked. I was so embarrassed I didn't know what to do. I sat there for 2 1/2 hours until all the other students turned in their exams and left the room. Then I raised my hand and asked the procter to come over and I explained what happened. She was so understanding! She called my roommate and asked her to bring my supplies and clean clothes to me. ( this was in 1975 or 1976 so no cell phones yet ). I will never forget this one that's for sure!

I have had my illiel conduit since mid 70's. Amazing how equipment has evolved. I remember karaya rings and virtually gluing appliances to you skin . No skin prep no gels .
I became an ostomate a year ago (urostomy). Prior to my surgery I watched several of your videos so that I would know what to expect, and even tho we have different types of ostomies and I'm much older than you, your confidence and directness put me at ease and I never experienced one minute of trauma or being upset with my "new normal". A year later I am still watching your videos for tips. Thank you and God bless you for being so candid and informative and helping others the way you have.
got my bag in 1970. (urostomy) Played football, wrestled, bucked a lot of hay, hard work my whole life. I care my "war Bag" with extra things in it. You remind me of me, you go and have a outstanding life.

I think sometimes the general public does not know the difference in ostomies and how they work and That gets old

People really overuse the term "brave" these days but you know what, you really are brave! You're awesome and have a fantastic attitude, which is why your friends just don't care about these mishaps. They know they're lucky to know you!

First off, you are such a sweetheart! Secondly, I can relate after having an ileostomy for 22 years! I've got horror stories, but then I have great jokes, too! You're very right in that we must realize these are the cards we've been dealt and this is just how it is for us. I've had every reaction, imaginable, and you do find out who cares for you and who doesn't. One thing I say a lot to people, who have questions about my pouch, is that I couldn't imagine having to sit down and take a poo! That seems so gross to me!! I've had this for so long that I would never want to go back to "normal". This helps to relax others around me, knowing that I am completely comfortable with myself. Also, I never apologize for accidents. This thing has a mind of it's own, at times, and as much effort as I put into making sure things are secure and clean, it goes crazy anyway! I just can't help that it leaks, at times. If ever you would like to talk to a veteran ostomy pouch survivor, I am always more than glad to chat! Bless you, sweetie, and may you always have your upbeat attitude about your situation. There are always bigger problems to focus on, bigger fish to fry, and higher mountains to climb. Happiness is a choice and I choose happy, every single day. Take care, dear! ;)
Maggie, I am just coming across these videos after getting my colostomy two weeks ago. I am hoping to have mine reversed someday but thank you for helping me realize I can have a life with this in. Thanks so much!
I went on a Salmon fishing trip when I lived in Alaska & we slept in the boat in sleeping bags, I woke up to my bag having broken in the borrowed sleeping bag. I had to get out of the boat and go to a sand bar in the middle of the river taking a bath in glacier water before putting on new equipment, In the middle of the freezing bath, I looked over and there were fresh bear tracks on my little sand bar!! I had to be super cold and super quick while keeping alert and getting back to the boat asap. BUT I couldn't get into the sleeping bag full of yucky, so got on the floor & just used the closed bag on top of me. Luckily my roommate on the trip had been my nurse for lots of hospitalizations, sepsis & 5 operations prior to moving in, so she explained to the guide why I was insisting on taking his bag to be cleaned (After washing it out in the tub & drying). I don't use clips anymore but the Hollister New Image has a velcro closure that works great!!!!! Much fewer accidents & not so pokey!
I also had to empty my bag when camping in 100 mph winds blowing over a glacier lake and raining so hard that the tent & sleeping bags were swamped. I had to go out in the weather and I found a boulder to crouch behind for privacy & again, cold, freezing and wet took care of business so I could go back to the swamped tent. In those circumstances a squeeze bottle with water is much better than TP.
Oh! Head's up. Be careful where you empty near a camping site because it can be mistaken for Bear Squat and worry any camper that sees it.
The accidents in bed with BF has happened, at lunch with friends etc. I've had an external pouch 20 years and an internal 10. (internal doesnt have these issues, but had to be reversed 10 years ago). Don't eat or drink before vulnerable activities and it won't activate & be a problem...more predictable. Always bring an emergency kit!!!!!!

When I was 19 I was still learning how to deal with my ostomy - needless to say I learned what not to eat before bed. I woke up in the middle of the night & my bag was completely full of air! I couldn't move without risking breaking the seal of the bag to my wafer. My roommate had to grab a towel to tuck under my sides - I knew it was going to pop open - and it did. So embarrassing! But we still joke about the "fart in a bag" incident.

I am a Nurse who was watching these vids .I don't have an ostomy but I just want to say that this young lady has the best attitude to her situation. Fantastic, mature, intelligent and more class than most people i've met.You should be very proud of the person you are and you could teach many people how to live, so impressed!!!

God didn't play a cruel joke on you, He sent you to be a shining example of courage and strength for everyone suffering from the same malady! You have taken the "raw deal" you were dealt and are using it to better the lives of others. Your experiences have also proven to you who your real friends are, so I know that you're as proud of them as they are of you.

Exactly because people don't talk about it and I received my ostomy 15 years ago after my bowel burst and I woke up in a coma 5 days later with an ostomy😮😮😮 I have learned more in the last year on TH-cam about dealing with ostomy and the difficulties that I have ever gotten from any medical staff😢😢 honestly Maggie you are a godsend two people with ostomies and I'm sure you've been for a long time because I only recently discovered you but this is an old video but the message is still the same thank you❤❤❤❤

Young Miss, My big brother is facing a colostomy after a losing struggle with cancer. After some tears, I found your videos and thought, "They have a model? He'll never be that cute so I guess he's gonna be okay." I can't tell you how much you've helped me to help him. I use a closed pouch. I don't have to worry about clips or velcro and no poo pouring for me. Works really good in public restrooms. You careful remove the pouch, put it in a disposable bag and put on a new one.
Gurrrrrrrl! You are a special kind of amazing. I had my surgery/urostomy at age 38, and I thought I was young!!! You have the most perfect attitude and for each story you share, I could so relate. You are a very beautiful young lady and are a true inspiration to younger people who have to have a colostomy. I am a nurse and I have seen older people who don't handle it as well as you have exhibited. You have such a positive attitude. Keep it positive. Like you said, there is nothing you can do about it. I was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease 12 days after I turned 22, soon to be 20 years ago this July. June of 2013 I could no longer hold out and had to get the dreaded surgery for a permanent colostomy bag. It seriously kept me in the house for about 1 1/2 years due to being paranoid about it leaking or as I called it exploding. Last Summer one of my best girlfriends pretty much forced me out of the house. I have learned how to apply my bag much better and learned what's needed to keep my bag from leaking. You are so young and such and inspiration to anyone. I will be 42 in July and watching how well you've adjusted to so much at so young is amazing. Thank you so much for your videos.
Samantha Bergner what will Crohn' s do to the body I was just found out a have it also but new at this please tell what I will fill like but I never get sick at my stomach.I just get unbearable pain that moves to different locations first my pain was in my collar bone to my left shoulder so that stop thank to God now it's up in my thigh sometimes I can't walk because the pain is so unbearable

I am very fortunate that I work in a Skilled Nursing Facility so I have the greatest co-workers that make those Embarrassing Ostomy Moments not so embarrassing. Thanks for sharing.
Every. Time. I take an overnight flight, when the stewards wake you up in the morning and everyone races to the washroom, I have had a horrific ostomy moment where it bursts open and pours all down my leg. The adrenaline and panic you feel during that moment is worse than a rollercoaster.
I don't even want to travel anymore because it is so traumatizing and embarrassing.
When it builds up air/ gas I carefully unroll the end and push out the air out and roll it back up.
baby wipes, I always carry a small travel sized pack of baby wipes because they will clean anything. also carry a small thing of baby powder, you never know when you will need some powder to absorb moisture. a tip about the scissors: if you have a note from a medical professional you can take the scissors anywhere. a note is very helpful when traveling out of country. just pop it in the travel kit and leave it for when you need to pull it out. broken clips - in the hospital I had to use a hair tie. now I use velcro bags, way easier for me to use. ultimately crap happens! literally.

When I use a clip, I always use a rubber band around the clasp... I just don't trust them to hold by themselves. The rubber band has never failed me. I have had an ileostomy for 32 years.
Jim Mosier there is a clip made that curves with your body very comfortable just ask about this clip were you get your supply's
@@jimmystout6179I have a clip like that but it's for left handers if you want it to confirm to your body. I prefer the straight clips.
Great vid mate. I'm 20 months into ileostomy with reversal coming up in 7 weeks. We've all had at least one of these "shit happens' moments. Thanks for sharing.

Reversal done. Pouch construction went well. Everything works. There were a few brief moments when i thought the bag was a better option but all good now.
You still there how that reversal for you now?

just got a iliostomy 2 months ago and have finally built up the courage to seek out others with the same medical problems as me. this is so helpful and i have to say that i totally agree with the paper wafers they help leaks so much. i also have a Velcro pouch instead of a clip so i never have to worry about it breaking.
The velcro can fail if it gets dirty. It happened to me.
I can relate keenly to your dilemma with the clip that opened spontaneously. I encountered that a few times over the years early in my life with my ioeostomy. I remedy the situation by simply wrapping a rubber band around the end of the clip. It never fails. I found it the best defense against clip failure. I always carry an extra rubber band with me and keep some in by glove compartment of my car when I am on the road. (Just a point of information, Times Square is on 42nd Street).
Wow! I don't have an ostomy anymore but the extra embarrassing moments I remember sound mild compared to some of yours. I was a little kid so have no idea what type of bags I had, but I totally feel you on the clamp coming off. It's awful! That happened at my grandma's once and my mom wasn't around so I had to go find help getting cleaned up. After that my mom started putting two clamps on opposing each other, and that problem never happened again. The velcro ones must have come out later. I'm trying to picture how that would work. So glad you are talking about this. I wish I'd known there were other people that had the same issues back when I had mine.
It is nice to open your experiences and share it to other patients like you, to blend in the atmosphere of ostomy and dealing difficulties of it.

The paper on the ostomy wafer is not paper. It is backing of more adhesive areas. Thank you so much for your videos!!! I have just returned home from my ostomy surgery and you have been so helpful ☺️
I have been packing a colostomy bag round under my shirt for just about 10 years now and I can relate to your stories very well. You have great attitude about it and that is what makes the difference, Great video. Oh, BTW, I ran across another video on ostomy tips, etc, and had no idea there were so many young people with an ostomy. I am old enough to be your great grandfather, and you can figure, by my age, things are going to start going south, health wise, but I am amazed with how many young adults are dealing with them also. Thanks again.
I am 69 years old with an ileostomy that is 44 years old. I worry about old age, say in my 80's and whether or not I can continue to deal with the bags and such. It terrifies me to think of being in a nursing home and having the need of a bag replacement and no one comes to do it. The feces burning my skin as I wait for help. (shiver)
Pamela Logaan i had a colostomy for 31 years and the feces burn is unbearable pain I had the before if you ever get one use philips of magnesium It the magnesium that works on any burns cut sores and it fast acting my urologist surgeon for 35 years being my doctor told of this years ago.And about going in a home when you have to they are amazing people the care takers know they have computers to help solve the difficulties of a patients

Was in a nursing home and they were not prompt in changing his bag as well as only using bags that stuck on with this awful adhesive thar never held and caused him to have rashes. No matter who we talked to they refused to give him the kind he preferred and needed. Because it was the cheapest bag is why. I got him out of there to love eith me.

Philips Magnesium for irritated skin..!! Thank you so much for the information. I will try it...!! Radiation fried my skin like chicken rind. And left my skin very sensitive after it healed... I've been using diaper rash cream. It only helps a little bit... That and baby wipes for cleansing... God Bless ~
You are very inspiring and informative. Many of us have no idea about this subject at all and knowing can be a great asset if I run into a person with an ostomy. I will be able to calmly and kindly deal with this so no ones feelings will be hurt. You are a real trooper and thank you for bravely sharing your knowledge with me.

But today, your video made me feel more relaxed about my ileostomy. I have had mine leak a few times (so far) and now I don't feel alone in this inconvenience.

PS: You are FAR more socially brave than I. I am NOW severely underweight. -Had to have the loop Ostomy surgury TWICE due to a suture-caused FISSURE (probably -we can never be sure).
People tend to look at underweight middle-aged guys with suspicion! Like we don't WANT to eat! I had a loop Ostomy , early NOV, only to have it redone 4 days ago! (8 weeks!) WARNING: The pain during a second, re-do surgury is as BAD as it gets on G-d's green Earth because they have to cut so much recently cut and healed tissue. -FAR worse than a first surgury. Incredible -all due to one bad suture. (honest surgeon!).
BTW pain charts are absurd as they do not consider TIME nor location of pain. In this case I had a pain pump 24/7 Not fun.
I like the one piece Velcro bags by Hollister, never had it come undone. I wear the 88300.

I am with the company coloplast, and so far nothing bad has happened (I've only had the ileostomy for about 2 weeks). The bag is Velcro though. I couldn't imagine having to trust clips! Thanks for being an inspiration!
If the velcro gets dirty it will eventually fail. It happened to me, so I prefer the clip.

I'm 16 I've have heirshbrungs (normally cured B4 your four but they didn't find it in time) and this super helped we have the same brand of bags thanks for this it mad my day you gained a follower
I didn't like clips in the first place but your last story made me realize why I wouldn't use clips at all. I have never had a problem with the Velcro except with my own stupidity when changing my bag and I forgot to roll it up. I will never use clips. Thanks for the vid though. Takes a lot of guts to talk about it is not easy even with your closest of family and friends. Good for you.
Jenny L there is a clip that curves with you body very comfortable just ask about the curved clip were you order your products I had my colostomy for 31 years
I found a way to cover some leaks. I use an adult diaper. Cut off the waistband, then turn the padded part sideways over your bag and put the waistband over it to hold it in place.
This works for me because my leaks are usually sideways. The padding is bent, which provides an enlarged space for the bag to expand. I was wearing this when I was talking to a friend and when we finally hung up, the whole inside was a mess, but NOT on my clothes. If your leak comes from the bottom of the bag where you empty it, a newborn size diaper will work along with some medical tape.

I carry empty margarine container with baby wipes, nappy bag, spare pre cut ostomy bag and sanitizer. enables me to do a clean up or change practically anywhere.
I just came across this video. I had my ostomy or about 12 years now and have had some of those moments. I've had the waking up in the middle of the night to a mess in the bed and have taken to folding and old flat sheet and wrapping it around my waist at night.
Donald Davis: Try disposable bed pads from your medical supply co. I use them because radiation has caused incontinence, and pullups don't last all night... Also if you're using clips, try the velcro type. I have never had a problem with the Hollister brand.

Thank you for being so honest about your illness. A friend of mine has CD and is having her colon and rectum removed today. I am learning more and more about this illness. I have realized that we may different illnesses from each other, we're all going through some difficult times, but the encouragement we get from each other is priceless! Keep taking one day at a time and continue to be you! I do pray and hope that a cure for your illness will be found one day. God bless!
Always keep extra clip when you go out. You never know when you will accidentally drop it in the public bathroom. Also keep extra pants or leggings and underwear. I have had my illiostomy for 30 years.

I had a clip break once while in a public setting. I had to very carefully wear my unclipped bag with the tail facing up and over my pant waist area. I never leave home now without an extra clip lol.
I have had an ileostomy for 44 years. There have been accidents, sure. I not only carry extra bags and accessories, I carry Doggie Bags so that I can dispose of my used bag in a sanitary and hidden manner if I have to leave a used bag in a public restroom. Just courtesy, I guess. I do not use the clips that come with the bags, as they cut into my skin and show under my pants. I use rubber bands, the kind for model airplanes as they so not break down easily (I have had times where I have had to tie the end of my ostomy bag in a knot because the rubber band broke!). Extra rubber bands are good. NOTE: Before going through TSA at an airport, empty your ostomy bag. If it is full, that liquid will show up on the x-ray machine and they will call you aside and you get to explain your ostomy and submit to a pat down.

Hi Maggie.....I am soon to have surgery for recurring cancer and doc said I will have a colostomy bag for life. I love your videos, but Im sooo scared! Surgery probably to happen within about 3 weeks. Can't stop crying...feel like I won't be able to do the on and off needs for the bag....feel like a big baby......thanks for your help...I'm going to continue watching you.....thanks Pat
I see your comment is a year old, but hope you are used to having your colostomy now. The emotional toll was bad at first, but it got better for me over time. Hope you are well
A few weeks ago my daughter's father-in-law had a colostomy. They said if he lost weight it might be about to be reversed, but as of right now it is permanent. He is 60+. I can imagine it will be very hard on him. You are a very brave and strong woman.
I also lost a clip in the middle of a CVS parking lot. massive leak in bed with my boyfriend, he had it on him a bit as well. He then cleaned it up, as he always does when he is here. I had to go three years without a bag, I had a firey skin infection which made it impossible to wear a bag. I finally found another Surg to re-do it. He did a remarkable job! TY for sharing :)
What did you do for the three years without the bag?
I had to wear big pads, similar to a maxi pad, along with lots of tape. It was horrifying to feel it leaking on my stomach, degrading. Especially at the beginning of my colostomy, my body didn't know how to react. The more air got into it, the more it would cause chaos for me. I got through it all You just have to keep putting one foot in front of the other.

This is good awareness. I had no idea how much our bowels meant to our lives. Why isnt this taught in his health class in high school? My clip broke. I used clamps like you use on paper. Three of them and folded the end of the bag over several times, Surprisingly, it worked.
The locking clip problem: I solve that by clipping with the bag the toilet paper in parallel. If the toilet paper it is too thin you may folded it in two layers. The paper should overlap the lock it self so it will wedge in there. That will prevent most the accident with the clip.

Hi I have a good "Baad" Ostomy story too. I went out to dinner with my parents to a Chinese restaurant then we went to the gardening place. I said to my mother that I would catch up to her after I use the washroom. I go in & start to undo my jeans when to my surprise my bag blew up. It was all over the sink, walls,floor,toilet, & myself. I too said "ARE YOU KIDDING ME!" I think I was in shock. I tried to clean up the best I could & luckily I was wearing a long sweater so I could hide my

Sweetie have you ever tried coloplast products. I use that and had really good results. Also adapt medical adhesive made by hollister
Coloplast products were a god send!

Hi Maggie, leaks are very much a part of an ostomates life! I suffer them on a daily basis and find that my life is deeply affected by them! I have supplies in my car, bag etc! Do you still get gas and how is it relieved? And, how do you keep odor from the bag from seeping out? Several of my family members have various forms of irritable bowel disorders and I've often wondered if a colostomy bag would give them relief from the chronic constipation or the opposite issue of chronic diarrhea
Yes, you do get gas. I tilt the bottom of my bag up in the air then open it, gently pressing the air out. Adept sells a deodorant gel for the bag.
Hooray to you for talking about this. It needs to be out there. I don't have an ostomy but I know several people who do. The fact that you are young is really helping all the younger people out there who have them. Good job for you!
Your sence of perspective is so finely attuned that it can only be described as poise. Your ownership over your horror moment/clip/malfunction suggests a wisdom that so out weighs your age. At the end of your horror story you asked what you should do..... well you should do exactly what you do.

You know it is nice to hear someone else tell about their embarrassing stories because we've all had them especially I have IBS and it's very unpredictable and yes I can't tell you how many tops specifically I've thrown in the garbage because of stains😮😮 it's not easy but what choice do you have right😮😮😮

Nothing to be embarrassed about, ! Your only human and it’s ok to have moments.
I have been lucky,no embarassing moments in public or with friends.(yet!) What usually happens is something l ate catches me by surprise and l wake up wearing the contents of the bag ( thank god for mattress protectors!) I have to admit to having a rather purile sense of humour and the ability to carry around farts to disperse at my discretion has allowed me to clear a room or two over the years l've had the bag. For some reason my workmates never seemed to appreciate the humour.👃

With all that you carry is there anything like a medical alert bracelet that would help to prevent being searched so you could bring with you the needed supplies, etc., without fear of being seized or embarrassment. Also, it could assist you if you need medical help while away from home. Just a thought.
