  • The Life of King Louis XIV - Part 2 - Louis Takes Power : At the age of sixteen, Louis XIV was crowned, but it was not until after Mazarin's death in 1661 that Louis took control of France himself.Through wars with foreign powers, notably Spain and the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands, Louis XIV managed to shift France's northern and southern borders into German, Dutch and Spanish territory. Due to the many wars that Louis fought, the French state almost went bankrupt.

Great videos. Would you consider doing one on Prince Eugene de Savoie-Carignan, Mazarin's great-nephew, who could have become one of France's greatest heroes but, because Louis XIV refused him admission into the French army, devoted his talents to the service of the Austrian emperor and went down in history as one of France's most fearsome adversaries?

This program made me do a little homework! I listened to it and really didn't understand why Mazarin would force Louis XIV to marry the Spanish princess and why was France almost broke. I also didn't understand why the French got involved in the 30 Years War. Wasn't that a Protestant War? As you can see, my knowledge of the 30 Years War is almost nonexistent. So, I did some research on this war. I didn't realize the war started in Bohemia due to the Reformation. The local ruler was Catholic but the majority of his subjects were Protestant. A problem!! A Catholic victory ensued. Then the Dane Protestants rose up which ended in another Catholic victory. Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden decided to lend a hand to his Protestant brothers. The French also got involved sending aid to the Protestants. I wondered why! I did not realize France was surrounded by the Holy Roman Empire controlled by the Habsburgs: by the Spanish Netherlands, Spain, the Papal States, Germanic small kingdoms, Austria and also a good part of Eastern Europe. No wonder the French were threatened! Gustavus Adolphus was winning with his mobile artillery, but was killed in battle. Without Gustavus, the Swedish now sent aid to France and the French began to fight which is why Louis XIV got Scarlet Fever in the Spanish Netherlands. Having a marriage between Louis XIV and the Spanish Princess would help end this Thirty Years War. Half of the Spanish Netherlands was relieved of Hapsburg rule. Switzerland was formed and given self-government. Switzerland became a neutral country from that time on. France gained Alsace which became an issue between the German states and France from then on. Prussia was also formed at that time and began the impetus for German union. All that fighting put quite a dent in the French economy, but significant changes had helped to break down the Holy Roman Empire/Hapsburg power - very advantageous to France. I am looking forward to hearing about the Calvanists and the Huguenots in Catholic France in your next Louis XIV program.
One question: Did Fouquet really throw a party and throw away his golden plates to impress the King? Or is this a tall tale? Louis XIV was not impressed.
Sorry this is so long, but I enjoyed the research I did to understand the politics of the time. If I have some incorrect information, let me know, I would have never learned anything about the Thirty Years War without this program of yours on Louis XIV. Thank you so much for your programs. I am really enjoying them!!!

It is very difficult for me to decide what goes into the videos and what not. If all had to be included, I’d have 1 hour long videos and a 25 part series haha ! I’m glad you were inspired to do some extra reading though. There is much more to know and learn than what goes into my videos for sure !!! Thank you for commenting, your ungoing support is appreciated !!

I'm sorry, but both of those are speculations. Some historians have suggested that but there's no proof for it. And contemporary writings give conflicting views of his symptoms. So you cannot state the way you did that he absolutely had both or either of those diseases.

Really nice videos, thanks for your work;-) Colbert alone would deserve several videos (I appreciate its not your focus though). In addition to your mention of custom duties, he fathered a complete economic doctrine known as Colbertism, in which the state is a full-fledged economic stakeholder, not only a tax collector but also an industrial player. He’s usually considered as the creator of state intervention, from which France never departed since. His efforts to restore France’s treasury and grow its industries were relentless, including industrial and economic espionage. He managed to steal the secret of large-size mirrors from Venice, of thin porcelain from China… He even organised a prison break from a British prison to get an English craftsman into France and secure his knowledge and know-how! He saw science and technology progress as critical, therefore created the Académie des Sciences (among so many other things) for scientists in various fields to work together and improve manufacturing processes and develop new technologies.
Small detail: although the final “S” is often muted in french (for instance in Tours, Angers, Rennes or Paris), it is not in Reims;-)
