So many negative comments, you must all be yacht designers! This is a magnificent, classic, elegant piece of fabulous British yacht design and builders. It is the first 57 built and the layout was specified by the owners to suit their requirements. In the video the designer, Stephen Jones, is onboard checking everything out to ensure the boat is optimised. It's a proper sailing yacht so yes there will be trip hazards and rigging getting in the way, it's not a computer-generated, soulless, oven-baked plank of a push-button superyacht with everything hidden and so many complex systems that need a million pounds a year to keep working. An Oyster of similar size and price is a very contemporary design and not to everyone's taste, some owners still want a classic-looking yacht like the Rustler. This is a modern-day classic and should be applauded as there are very few boatbuilders left and most just churn out fat, twin-wheeled plastic bathtubs with stunted rigs and a swim platform. In the 2018 Golden Globe race the first 3 boats were Rustler 36s which have been in production since 1980. Princess Anne has owned and sailed a Rustler yacht for over 25 years. This beautiful yacht simply oozes craftmanship and quality and does not deserve all the negative criticism from armchair sailors, many from across the pond where some of the most hideous yachts ever built originate! If you want something to slag off then go look at the Island Packet SP cruiser. www.yachtingworld.com/reviews/boat-tests/rustler-57-review-traditional-british-cruiser

Wade Brown Yeah that SP is a fine example of an uncluttered deck and classic lines 😂
Of course the British designer Bill Dixon produced the most beautiful deck saloon in the Moody 45 DS which might tempt even the armchair critics to sea with it’s sliding roof!

This yacht is much more versatile ,I would really enjoy all the sailing options this yacht would provide me....Just my opinion....

Solid, sturdy & conservative. The good thing about appearing dated at birth is this boat probably ages well especially with the build quality. Personally I prefer the more contemporary designs - clean decks and light minimalist interiors - but maybe they'll look dated soon while this boat will always be a bit of a classic someone turns to when they tire of fresh and modern. Excellent presentation by Toby - think he's the best I've seen at boat tours - thoughtful and concise with great delivery. Good balance of narrated boat shots and presenter talking to camera.

Not expensive just good ideas that will improve living on board. I live onboard 3 months a year and spend time on the Swan 54 in the pen next to mine. I personally would prefer more balance between the common and private accommodation for a 57-footer. That huge open-plan galley/saloon area seems to be at odds with the cramped little kennels that are supposed to serve as guest cabins, but would be more fitting for crew. I think I'd feel just a wee bit guilty as I sprawled-out in my king-size bed forward, while friends squeezed into their little cots astern. Maybe the owner is making a statement like - "I'm the big dog, so don't forget it. Count yourselves lucky to have me as a friend and be thankful I even let you onboard..." In fact it looks like a corporate day-sailer, an interesting place to entertain for business, cruising around the coast while deals are thrashed out and contracts signed, before returning to port. A £1.5 million yacht and it's got storage for a bicycle? - that's amazing... I suppose it enables the guests to do errands...

Rustler has it almost the way I would want the winch placement right at the wheel it would be perfect if they split the winches right next to the wheel. One side for everything coming off the mast and the other side for the sails lowering and raising of all the sails . The option of a hardtop Dodger with the top of the Dodger just below the boom. I would prefer the Schaefer inboom main sail along with a separate track for a storm main sail. Inner forestay with the storm stay sail Genoa forward and then the fuller for the code zero. The aft end having the high end booms for the tender radar, wind generators and the solar panels. Would also like to have a wind powered auto pilot with its separate keep. But since I don't have any clout I probably wouldn't see any of my suggestions put into place. However if they did those suggestions you would have a happy solo or short handed crew running to the bank to buy one of their yacht's.

At 6'4" I doubt I would fit inside this yacht, on top of that it really appears to be a yacht designed for a couple sailing with only very occasional friends and family sleeping on board, the deep helm is beautiful but comes at a cost of lost room below and the tripping hazard would always worry me. For this money there are other builders I would consider first.

It's really too bad that this boat is such a huge compromise. You get Rustler's craftsmanship and attention to detail, and a really strong, well-made boat, but for those things you have to accept a cluttered cockpit, cluttered deck and a 1980s volume/LOA ratio. I'd love to see what Rustler could put out if they let their artisans and craftsmen build a modern yacht.

    • @phillycheesetake
      @phillycheesetake 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I prefer these kinds of boats. The problem with modern boats which rely heavily on form stability, is that they're affected much more by waves. As soon as it gets choppy, you start being battered around. There's no replacement for good old-fashioned ballast, and a hostile seascape will teach you that in no time at all.
These older forms have less space, but in my view that's no bad thing. How much space do you need really? If you've decided to live on a boat, you've already decided to live with fewer possessions.

yeah, that was my impression too, and was just about to comment when I saw yours.
There are appealing aspects around the cockpit and lazarettes, but as soon as you move forward it gets tricky, with a lot of obstacles to negotiate, and the feeling that only the very experienced sailors would risk going forward without wearing a lifey!

Why such a low freeboard in such a large yacht?
Too many trip hazards on deck.
    Prefer masthead forestay.
    Those angled shrouds, horrible.
How is the maintenance on the timber on deck?
Do you have an electric boom vang?

"Does this go-anywhere traditional British cruiser suit you?" No. Too big. Also, I like a sail plan that's broken up a bit more. A yawl, ketch or even a cutter, if small enough, would suit me better, as I would be like to be able to single-hand the thing.
    It's reasonably good-looking, though.

@@OgamiItto70 I don't believe any yards are building a traditional cutter with the mast near center of the hull. It is a modern cutter. At 8:04 he mentions that it is a cutter rig, which Rustler prefer to do. The stay sail isn't meant for only going upwind or for heavy weather. The sail plan is designed for all three sails to fly the majority of the time.

Denn nur so kann das harte Leben auf dem offenen Ozean einigermaßen erträglich gestaltet werden. @@dreworoirden7675 Hi Drew, I think in your position I'd consider having a chat with a few brokers and go see some boats, depends very much on your budget & whether you plan to sail with others or on your own. But before you buy a yacht you can charter one for a week or two somewhere nice (Caribbean or mediterranean?), you can charter a boat with or without a skipper. Good luck & enjoy...

Sailing Rona Bowman many thanks for replying. With men its a p#ssing contest. Get the biggest you can lol. So thought I would ask a lady sailor. Have found a broker called David Seal in Monaco and Antibe so will have a chat about a charter. Still think I would hire a skipper to pass on their skills. Fair winds and safe passage.

@@dreworoirden7675 I would consider the length of the average waves where you intend to sail her. An over simplification: around 50' sailing short becomes systems dependent: 30' is great when coastlines are kept in site: 40' makes a passage far more pleasant.
Who will be with you? Where are you going? What is your budget? On the last I try to get as close to reality as I can, but like to leave a 200% error margin: meaning even if it gets bad i am still quite ok.
Good luck & keep asking great questions & enjoy your journey sir.

I sometimes envy what world you guys live in, but not for long
My 41 yr old single skin 365 would blow the doors off that thing in 15 knots, and she isnt fast
I do like the teak cap/toe rail and the fixed dodger reminiscent of Swedish boats
side decks are narrower than mine, but ok its workable
lose the dorades, there are too many tripping points
    agree about single line reefing
Engine access sucks against what it could be if it opened right up, but the location is a worthwhile experiment if you dont have to work on your own engine. Get that cabinet right off the top of it so I can see what is really going on and not need the acrobatics of a monkey to get a good look around quckly.
The saloon is gigantic, but I think I would miss more intimate conversation, its as welcome as a German cinema
The jib ought be club footed and self tending, after all this isnt a racing boat
the yankee looks like it wont go through on its own, maybe it should be higher cut unless it does.
I like that they didnt piss about with collapsing cleats on the rail, its just an example of honesty and realism
    Likewise the dinghy
the panels and electrics look good idea, the nav is the right way around,
but flip lids are truly a pita, have a drawer that sides to centre, then all my kit doesn't swish off the table
I generally like YW reviews, they're kind of the standard and without fuss and needless BS
I just ask that realistically, is this where the market is, is this where you want to be?
    thats my counter review..
have fun with your lives, I know I do ...
