I worked as a psychiatric aide in a mental institution for 10 years during my 30's. I progressively got so depressed and was drinking more and more. I eventually got fired because of the drinking. I entered a treatment program and completely got sober and changed my career, got away from health care type work. I am still sober for more than 28 years and the job I am doing now I absolutely love doing and have been doing it for 27 years. Shortly after I went through rehab I picked up cycling and got addicted to it. I am 66 years old now and still addicted to cycling. I consider myself lucky because not many people have a success story like mine but it was nice to hear you talk about how cycling has been changing your life. It sounds like it is something you need too.

I like you had a breakdown about 5 years ago which resulted in an attempt to take my life at one time. What had a profound effect that completely changed my relationship with my thoughts and how I was through meditation. I wish I had found it 25 years ago but at least I have it now. Like you I have started doing exercise again in particular swimming and cycling which helps. Love the videos and your enthusiasm for cycling and crunchy apples. Keep em coming.

I agree about getting a bike fit! I'd add that people should do so *_before_*_ buying_ a bike. Most people get bikes that are big or setup in ways that compromise efficiency and/or lead to injury.

Anxiety and depression present a constant battle, there are few things that raise one's spirits the way cycling does. The endorphins from a long pull on the flats, the feeling of accomplishment when you crest the rise of that climb you've felt intimidated by for so long but one day just decided to give it a go anyway followed by a sweet shot of adrenaline from zipping back down again. If you add in the camaraderie amongst fellow pedallers and the health benefits of getting fit it's a winner. Keep smiling Amy, your bubbly positivity always brings some light relief to the week.

Any “middle” aged cyclists reading, (whatever age middle aged is I don’t know) I’m in my 40’s. I started about 8 years ago. Weight around 13st. 10 miles was an achievement. BMX pedals on a road bike wearing trainers! Built up from there. Entered a 30 mile Sportive, completed it(in trainers). Ate like a madman for 2 days after. I had no idea about eating whilst riding.
Long story short I recently completed a 70 mile sportive. I’ve done the Loch Ness Etape and others. I’m no young skinny guy. Just grinding away, out every Sunday that I can. My top tip would be never think about the end distance. Just do it in stages, this road to that tree etc. Also in the beginning just do loops near to home, then if you’re knackered you can get back no problem. Use Strava, you’ll find local routes from other users, and it’s good motivation. Cheers
