Thank you for using the correct term RATING. So many TH-camrs usung RATE incorrectly when they mean rating.
    Let's review:
Rating refers to a job, a specialty.
Rate is pay geade, like E-1.
Thank you for getting it right.

my 1st time in boot camp, (went twice), they asked me what i wanted to do and i told them but they said my points were not high enough, they said all i rated was a cook or a yeoman, and i didnt want to be either. i didn't go to A school, was sent directly to a ship. if i hadn't been able to type, i might of ended up being a cook or yeoman, but i was able to type and i got what the boot camp specilistst said i didn't have enough points for. i became a Gunners-mate Guns. all experience learned "on the job" never went to school, attended all gun lectures, and if i'd of studied more i'd of passed the E-7 exam, but i flunked.

@@LarryGarcia-p3j 1st time i was in the reserves and went the full tour of boot camp, then when the unit in Texas put me in for the draft, saying i was missing meetings, of which i wasnt, i was in Alaska, and the units commander would pick me up and we'd go to the college and watch oceanography movies. anyway when i went for the physical in Anchorage, the Navy recruiter said i'd need to do boot camp again, just not the full tour. did the 1-5 week, was in a company called "previous service." btw no marching, just going to classes, once finish i was assigned a ship in Norfolk, but had to wait as it was being built. became a plank owner when the ship was commissioned in Norfolk. the ship is now de-commissioned.

Glad to see that they finally established the nuclear ratings. I was an EM back in the day (1970's) and in spite of be a nuc and spending all my time in the engine rooms, when I went to take the test, it was the same test every standard fleet EM took.
Now some of the sections made perfect sense, like motors, controllers and electrical theory. But when I came to the sections on "Ship Service Equipment" I mean, how the hell do I know how many loaves of bread are cooked in a Model XX Oven? Or how many pounds of laundry does a Model XX washing machine hold? I shook my head and went though these sections using the tried and true SWAG method.
You know Scientific Wild Ass Guess!
I guess it worked. I was promoted in the first increment. Left the Navy as an EM1

@@johntrottier1162 They say genius skips a generation. I can confirm. My Dad was an ET3 and a bona fide Mensa member.
I was a dumbass and an OS.
My sister's kid now, he enlisted after high school as an MM. Went to Ballston Spa for Nuclear Power school. A few years in the fleet the Navy selected him for a program that paid for him to attend Oregon State to study Nuclear Engineering. He graduated in three years Summa Cum Laude, with not only a BS but he and his buddy were the first undergrads to also earn Nuclear Powerplant Operators Licences in the reactor on campus. Then was commissioned as an ensign and sent to refuel CVNs.
But then, after a few years of that, he was accepted to MIT for their Nuclear Engineering Masters program. The Navy said no at first. Then he threatened to get out to attend. They ended up letting him stay in and attend, paying his tuition and room and board off campus also. All they wanted was for him to forfeit $270,000 in bonuses. Which he did, calculating the future value of the masters degree to be at least $700k. Again he graduated with honors. All tolled, he did 24 years and retired just a couple years ago as a Commander. A mustang Commander, no less.
So yeah, genius skips a generation.
I'm so fucking proud of this kid after I taught him his multiplication tables when he was six . He thought I was a genius until he was eight and learned the truth. You don't care, I know.
TL;DR Some shitbird OS won't shut up about his very smart nephew, the retired mustang Commander nuke engineer with a master's degree from MIT, and thinks the kid only did so well because his uncle taught him his multiplication tables when he was six.

See SWICC. They serve in Special Boat Units. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_warfare_combatant-craft_crewmen
Also it’s common offhand parlance to say you are “flying out to the boat” or “did my time on the boat” or something similar (referring to the carrier) despite the official Navy nomenclature, and the ridiculousness of calling the carrier a boat. If you’re in Aviation, officer or enlisted, everyone knows what type of “boat” you are referring to. The only question then is which one?
