  • I took a tour of the London Stadium, home to West Ham United.

    West Ham used to play at Upton Park, but moved into the London Stadium in Stratford after the 2012 Olympics. Queen Victoria Park is a massive complex complete with a Westfield shopping centre and other amineties.
    Should West Ham have moved there or stayed at Upton Park?

      Unfortunately I never got to see the Boleyn Ground which upsets me greatly as someone from East London. I found London Stadium to be very vast, people are so far away where it feels there’s no cohesion between the supporters. Also I sat quite close to the pitch and it still seemed to be quite far from the action. Although, I think it’s amazing that our club got to settle in such an iconic stadium. Just my opinion

    It'd be great to see you do a little football tour of Cyprus. It's a pretty small island so travelling is very manageable if you rent a car and they've got a really cool little football culture with some fierce political rivalries (Onomia vs APOEL) as well as some interesting stadiums dotted around in the middle of nowhere. If you get some locals to help you out and show you the culture around food/football/politics I reckon it'd be a great series of videos. Puncheon is also still playing out there for Pafos!

    For the younger generation of West Ham supporters, accepting and enjoying the move to the London Stadium was probably easier to accept than those of us who spent some of our best days at Upton Park. It's taken me a while, but loss turned to acceptance, and I've enjoyed some great moments along with a lot of heartache at the LS.
    A couple of things - We're never going to replace what Upton Park was, and the London Stadium is still an athletics stadium first and foremost. Depending on where you are in the ground, particularly in the upper-tiers behind the goal, you're miles away from the pitch.
    Upton Park was more than a ground. The streets, the stalls, cafes, pubs, etc., there's none of that around the LS.
    All the angst with the move was caused by Gold, Sullivan and Brady, but thankfully it appears we're in the last few years of their stewardship.
    Two final things from me. I am feeling raw after last nights defeat to Spurs. I was at the game, and while I hate to admit it, their ground is probably the best in England. I travel to away games regularly, and it's a magnificent ground unfortunately filled with overentitled delusional Spurs fans.
    And lastly, Rangers fans are always welcome at West Ham ⚒🇬🇧

      @PrimeVids , I think so, too. My old season ticket was in Chav Corner, and the players warming up or taking corners would receive some light-hearted banter, and it was good when they'd start laughing.
      There are games where the LS has been rocking, even intimidating, e.g., Chelsea at home in the league cup, which was also the first London Derby at the ground.

    'Improved the matchday experience'? Maybe for the tourist fans. There are PIMMS drinks stands on the concourses, burgers cost a fortune and there are huge gaps between some of the stands and scaffolding holding up the seating where the retractable seating system failed. I'm all for progress, but Karen Brady has ripped out a lot of what made West Ham with no regard for the generations of traditional fanbase in order to please her new target 'customer base' The stadium is ok, but they failed on so many of the promises they made when they were trying to soften the blow of leaving the Boleyn Ground. And if you look at what's left of the Upton Park site they've not even really acknowledged the history that was there, like Arsenal did so brilliantly when they left the Highbury site.
    The only way to make the London Bowl a proper football stadium is to knock it down and start again. To bring a few seats in the front tiers a little bit closer to the pitch does nothing for the remaining tens of thousands of seats that can't be moved.

  • @martinmay8919
    @martinmay8919 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I recently went to watch my team Grimsby in the National League playoff final. Town fans in general think it's the worse large stadium we have ever been to. It's absolutely crap, and they charged us a fortune to go there! There's a large gap, about 20 - 30 feet, between the front seats and the seats higher up at the back. This gap is covered over with tarpaulin sheets, which looks a complete mess. The poor fans in the upper tier are miles away from the pitch because of this. To compound the mess, they removed all the lower section of seats behind both goals, so the poor fans behind the goal were miles away from the pitch, and made for an awful atmosphere. Hope never to have to go there again, it's awful.

However with us now in the Olympic stadium it gives an opportunity for many children to come and watch West Ham and grow a passion and love for the team. I had been to Upton Park a few times but was never old enough to appreciate the atmosphere so was not really into football. However when we moved it opened up another 30,000 odd spaces for season ticket holders which has been a revelation for me honestly. I’m now in love with West Ham and in love with football ⚒️⚒️

    The bulbs in the flood lights aren't from Upton Park, they just still have a few of the original lamps from when it hosted then the stadium hosted the Olympic games. Also Spurs didn't keep the flooring from WHL, they crushed up the old brickwork from the east stand wall and used it in the new polished concrete floors.

    I think there was were talks of extending their old ground up to 40,000, but when Gold and O'Sullivan took over they had their hearts set on moving to a bigger stadium and wanted to move into the Olympic stadium after the games finished. Though from the sound of it from West Ham fans it has not been a popular decision. A fair distance away from the pitch, dissatisfaction towards the owners and the fact their traditional rituals were taken away when they moved because supporters used to get their pie & mash in the greasy spoon or the pub near to their old ground.

      @joeybill9472 ปีที่แล้ว

      They were going to knock the East Stand down and rebuild it to a double decker. Would have made it 40,000.
      However Gold and Sullivan made up some bulls*it about it being to close to a bus garage that went not long after West Ham moved and also because it couldn't be built above the flats next to the ground. The flats now on the Boleyn are taller than the flats next to the ground.
      They moved them for profit.

    There are many problems with this stadium, however the biggest problem has to be the fact that it’s 3.5 miles away from where the Boleyn Ground was. If this stadium was in West Ham/Upton Park area it would be more accepted but it’s the fact that it’s in Stratford which is completely different to Upton Park and stinks of money.

      It is in West Ham, the Boleyn was in East Ham.

    • @chairmanalf7856
      @chairmanalf7856 ปีที่แล้ว

      Being in Stratford is actually closer to our West Ham roots as it is situated in the old Metropolitan borough of West Ham. The Boleyn was in East Ham, otherwise we would have been called ‘East Ham United’, had we started off there.

    I was at the West Ham vs Man City cup game and I thought it did not feel like football stadium. They really need to bring the fans closer to the pitch. However it is a much better experience than going to Upton Park.

      It's an Athletics stadium. It's the only one if it's size in the country, which is strange for arguably the 2and most popular sport in country. If West Ham don't like it, move.

    Originally we never wanted to move to the London stadium but our Icelandic owners went bankrupt. GSB bought the club and thought it’d be a brilliant idea

    • @chairmanalf7856
      @chairmanalf7856 ปีที่แล้ว

      The old Icelandic owners wanted to build a 45,000 capacity stadium at the old Parcel Force depot site at West Ham. The problem was that it had terrible transport links and with no off street parking. I wonder how our supporters in those days would have felt about that?

      @@thomasclucas477 2 miles is a long way when we're talking about the middle of London. You can pass by three other clubs in that distance.

      What absolute rubbish were still in the London Borough of Newham there are no other clubs. The closest club is Leyton orient in Waltham Forest. The same fans from London Essex and Kent still go to the ground by public transport into London in the same Borough. To compare it to Wimbledon moving 60 miles away and being renamed as Mk Dons is laughable.

    • @chairmanalf7856
      @chairmanalf7856 ปีที่แล้ว

      By moving to the new stadium, 2 miles from the previous one, we actually moved back into West Ham from East Ham and are much closer to our original roots. I guess you aren’t from or even know the area?

  • @joeybill9472
    @joeybill9472 ปีที่แล้ว

    They should just knock it down and rebuild it.
    Spurs had the right idea for the ground. It's not a football stadium, it's an athletic stadium.
    It's such a sanitised area, even on non match days it feels sanitised!

    Our Icelandic owners offered £100M towards the stadium cost to have retractable lower tier seating but it was turned down by cuddly Ken Livingstone as it would bias the legacy use which needed to be available to all options, then we looked around the neighbouring areas for new stadium possibilities but then going tits up opened the takeover and the renewal of the legacy idea… LS should have been just the lower tier as an athletic stadium (23000 capacity) and us near West Ham station… an equally fruitful future of possibilities perhaps…⚒️🫧🪜☯️✌🏻🥸🕊️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🇬🇧
