    If it's of any assistance, reflections can be totally neutralized by using a polarizing filter on the lens with opposing polarizers over your lights. Once they're in place, lock the one on the camera in a specific orientation and rotate the filters over the lights individually until the reflections are cancelled out.
    If that's too complex for most people, a large black card with a hole cut out can be placed at the bottom edge of the lens which will block any reflections from above as long as the card is somewhat bigger than the top piece of glass.
    Professional rostrum cameramen routinely use both of these techniques.

      That is genius!! I was already using the card above now, but the polarizing filters is so neat - I will put that into practice when I next use this setup. Thank you so much for sharing that, super helpful :)

      @@Animatortor - I'm glad you find it useful. You can also get some very interesting animated rainbow color effects by using cross-polarizers as I've described with clear shaped objects, such as a drinking glass, bowls or vacuformed plastic. In this case you'd lock the polarizers on your lights (backlighting the clear object works best) and then animating the circular polarizer on your camera lens. This should give you a crawling rainbow across the object as the polarizers highlight its refraction properties. Holding the camera's polarizer to your eye and rotating it will also give you the same effect which you can check before you go through the trouble of animating it.

    I use to be an art framer and had to cut glass all the time, you know the crazy thing... I never cut myself playing with the glass, it was always the paper matting that cut me. After the mat cutting machine made the matts (it's like a giant cricket cutter) the edges were so sharp, and it's paper so you don't always think about being careful then - slice - ouch.
    Happy New year.

      Oh interesting, that's such a cool job!! Paper is deadly, I can totally see that happening and definitely ouch - paper cuts are the absolute worst. My dad cut his finger on a crust of bread once... the most unlikely things can cause injuries! Happy New Year to you too :)

    This was really a great tutorial. So simple and yet I never thought of doing this. Thanks! Probably the hardest part is making a rig for the camera.

    • @Animatortor
      @Animatortor  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad it was helpful :) Yeah, I too haven't used this technique often because of feeling it was more difficult that it actually was... but the only thing really stopping me was my own laziness haha. Traditional multi-planes are a lot bigger than this one, the first one I ever used was about 12 years ago and I was animating sand on glass - that one was a beast, like a proper robust kind of rig. Many tripods now have arms for mounting from above, but yeah a lot of people would agree mounting the camera is the hardest part.

    • @zygotegarden
      @zygotegarden 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Animatortor thanks for your reply and looking forward to seeing your future projects - animating sand must be very difficult indeed. I saw some traditional multi plane setups in a book and was daunted by it but your diy approach was great I think.

    Lighting is always a problem

    • @Animatortor
      @Animatortor  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      My pleasure, glad they were of help!! And yes, I completely agree, lighting is often the hardest part. You can buy glass that has a special coating on (which is less reflective) and can help... picture frame glass doesn't tend to have this though... but at least this sort of set up lets you try the technique and see if you like it before investing more money :)

    • @Animatortor
      @Animatortor  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much! Yeah lighting can be tricky even for people who have done things for decades. You just have to try things until you get the look you are after. A top TV cinematographer told me that… which made me feel better when I was learning 👌🏻

    Brilliant video. Can you tell me what lense you use on the main rig, looking down at the glass?

    • @Animatortor
      @Animatortor  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you :) I just used my standard 18-55mm lens - it's just the bog-standard kit lens that came with the camera body. Using a zoom lens is good though because it gives you more options for framing without having to move the camera physically up or down.

    Thanks. I saw another video about this and thought of doing it before I decided to have everything fuzxy. It probably won't work for what I do, but it's cool to see that this is how you did this snimation to move the characters separate from the backgrounds and have different layers.

    • @Animatortor
      @Animatortor  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're welcome! Ah cool... yeah this probably wouldn't be the easiest with fuzzy characters. I have a much bigger glass multi-plane that I use for professional work and I've animated lego, paper and clay on that - all with great results. If I ever have a fuzzy idea I'll let you know how it goes and whether I get good results with that too :)

      Sorry for the delay in replying. I use LED lights from Amazon... amzn.to/32Qi6uI and light stands too amzn.to/3btHeeZ with ball heads amzn.to/2DjvAGG My camera mount is custom made... I built it myself, so one one exists... but you can buy tripod arms that allow you to do a similar thing. You'll want to get a horizontal attachment - hope that helps. I'll try and make a more helpful video at some point.
