Yeah you're right, they do look VERY similar and in general I really hope the Sea Devils DON'T look like that. And honestly it'd be a very RTD move to randomly bring back a species from an obscure 60s Doctor Who story!
@@CulturePhilter oh sure. I menan remember the Silruians got an update as well. maybe this could be a creature that starts as maybe the catlyst? it does look interesting for sure.
The thought that it's a human/Sea Devil hybrid brings "rishathra" (a SF term, introduced by Larry Niven, for "sex between species" basically) to a whole new level.
Fish People is a great shout, especially looking at the comparison to the animation. I wonder if the name Fish People will need an update!? We just need the seaweed from Fury of the Deep and the Heamavores now! 🐟
I was just thinking about the "weed creature" from Fury from the Deep! That would be an interesting add, as there was a definite anti-industrialism / anti-pollution message going on there. Plus the Australian censor got too freaked out by characters exhaling poisoned gas! Such delicate flowers, the Aussies
And the crew of Stingray: Troy, Phones and Aqua Marina. Maybe this whole venture is actually a backdoor reboot of Stingray. "How we going to sell this?" "Tell them it's a Doctor Who spin-off!"
I didn't see anybody talking about these ideas on my twitter feed so I really appreciate this video, and I hope you're right!! Having a return of the Fish People would be incredible
The so-called “fish people” in “The Underwater Menace” were humans that were surgically altered to breathe underwater (which Polly narrowly escaped from becoming). They were not a separate species.
So they were but it wouldn’t take much to add to that lore that the alteration was on a genetic level as well as just surgically and then they might have reproduced. Therefore effectively starting a new species even if they were originally created by humans.
@ That could work. Or maybe the Silurians and Sea Devils have been cross-breeding. Or with a little DNA manipulation they could have created a brand new sea creature we’ve never seen before.
Also, I watched the animated version of the Underwater Menace and they made Professor Zaroff drown alongside his underwater city. So, what if Zaroff survived and experimented on the fish people and he's behind this? Yes, it's a deepcut, but we're coming from a season where Sutekh was the villain, so it's not that crazy of an idea.
Yes with RTD so far already bringing back The Toymaker, Sutekh and even a villain from 70s comics (The Meep) I wouldn’t be surprised if he take another classic one off monster and brings it back.
Yes would be great to have both types of Silurian on screen together and *if* this is a sea-devil then sure, these guys too, next to their more turtle like brethren.
It looks more like a NuWho silurian than anything else. Silurians and sea devils are closely related, so it stands to reason they can produce offspring. One of it's parents is silurian, the other is sea devil
Listen, I love the sea devils design but it’s 2024 and if we want a spin off that has drama between the land and the sea then we need to accept those turtle boys aren’t gonna work! It’s like trying to imagine the emotional scenes between Alaya, Restac and the elder silurians in series 5 if they were all three eyed lumbering plastic monsters with round mouths with funny voices! It just wouldn’t have the same effect?
This might be far fetched but what if the ones in the sea are fighting for the same space after locating it and surviving the doctors accounter like along with the sea devils and fish people what if it also includes other creatures that have lived in water like that whale from thin ice, lochness monster and the kroll but then as they realise there’s people and creatures on land for the same thing they settle there differences to team up to fight the land creatures.
I hope you're right Phil. Then again the Silurians are appearing in their new more humanoid design in Joy to the World, which then makes me think they will make the Sea Devils more in line with them, so I'm expecting to be annoyed once this spin-off releases.
@@CulturePhilter More reason why they'd bring the Sea Devils in line with the new Silurian design. It's a shame to 'humanify' these creatures, as it diminishes the fun, their uniqueness and dumbs down the messaging in their stories for mainstream audiences.
I am looking forward to this but the trouble is most Silurian/Sea Devil stories end the same way with them being taken off the board. I think if this series is going to live up to it's potential there needs to be consequences which last beyond it's runtime. I'd love for the series to end with a Sea Devil civilisation becoming a ongoing presence on Earth, akin to Wakanda revealing itself in the MCU. I can't see anything like this happening as WHO likes to restore the status quo so that Earth remains the Earth the audience lives in.
Yeah I wish they’d move beyond that too, RTD did start to do that in his first era with public awareness and commenting about aliens by the end. But then Moffat undid it all with his crack in time.
The Fish People from The Underwater Menace makes complete sense. And I definitely believe that the Sea Devils could've approached other water races to help out. I'm also thinking we might see Silurians appear since they are related to the Sea Devils. Alternatively, I also liked the comment from someone on Twitter who said that maybe female Sea Devils look entirely different from male ones. It's a possibility.
I'd like you to be right. If they are supposed to be the Atlantean fish people... persons of fishiness as they must now be called... then it is a good redesign. Surely if they're sea devils someone in the productioj team would have had the presence of mind and assertiveness to tell the designer that the Sea Devils are reptiles and not fishy but turtley instead. But then I am pessimistic.
Interesting theory and entirely possible, all the fuss being made of a blurry photo with zero context behind it beyond it's from the filming set is making me laugh to be honest. Speculation is fine, over reaction is ridiculous 😂😂
Yeah I love a bit of speculation. Even if some goes “look, if this is the sea-devil design I’m a bit worried” is fine. It’s the “This is the worst thing ever” reactions that I’d class as over reacting
I have not watched the episodes the fish people are fron but itd make sense theyd both be fed up that humans are ruining there home mabey theres even more intelligent aquatic life that helps them
The Moffat Silurians look nothing like the Classic Silurians in either iteration. So maybe this is to the Classic Sea Devil what Moffat's lame rubbish Draconian ripoff Silurians are to the original.
I hope not. I thought at the time that there was a more half way point between what was and what they did with the Silurians that they could have done to give more facial expression while still looking like an evolution of original design. Hopefully they take THAT approach for sea-devils. We’ll see.
Thanks for sharing my theory on the fish people returning 😁😁😁
No worries. I couldn’t remember who had posted it so sorry all I said was effectively “I saw this somewhere on Twitter”
@@CulturePhilterno worries. Easily done 😁
The fish people is such a brilliant shout
My money is that the picture is a “fish person” rather than a sea devil.😊
It certainly looks that way and I hope it is.

I didn't think of that, but I get the feeling you're right.
I think it could be quite interesting if lots of sea based species team up.
Maybe it's a Pescaton
Would be quite cool is Pescatons were also included as part of an under-sea coalition. I Love a deep-cut audio drama reference. 🙂
I could totally believe that RTD would also bring back the Fish People. He did drop the Macra into Gridlock afterall.

Fish people can not breath air.
Maybe if they were genetically modified.
Maybe they’ve evolved. Or been altered. Or have a teeny tiny breathing apparatus we can’t see in the blurry picture.
