Because it's hard enough to see out of those costumes during the day. At nighttime on a dark stage, the performers are completely blind in there. That's why the costumed characters who don't use a lift have handlers that guide them off stage.

That's a really great angle, I've never seen the dragon rise up before. R.I.P Murphy. Gone but never forgotten.

Safety reasons that I think are quite obvious
Because they don't want him being burnt alive by a flaming dragon

I think because the stage was too dark and he might get hurt
