I am glad that I didn't listen to them at that time. My kids were very young when they arrived here. Now they don't want to go back and love this beautiful country. Bravo! One of the most moving stories that have been aired from Raftar. And, one of the most insightful ones as well for all who would want to understand the brain drain phenomenon.
Dr. Shujaat kept it plain and simple for the simple reason that the problems people face in Pakistan are, in reality, of a very fundamental nature. This also explains that someone is deliberately sabotaging the natural process of social and economic development.
Like the host (Faisal), I am also feeling the dying pulse of a nation of 250 million people. It's is extremely painful when one tries to imagine the helplessness of the masses. But whoever gets the chance to flee from this country will not let it go. There is a lot more to human consciousness than the call of the 'moazzin' five times a day. Believe me, one can be a better muslim in one of these non-Muslim countries of the world than living in the Land of the Pure.
I was Associate Professor in NED University, but left everything and immigrated to Canada at the age of 54!

    Core issues:
    1. Lack of freedom of speech
    2. Structural economic collapse due to supremacy of one institution (lack of fair competition)
    3. Corruption at institutional levels to grass root.
    4. Lack of basic necessities like water, electricity, roads, education etc.
    5. No accountability from individuals to institutions.
    6. Lack of law, order and security
    7. Institutional support to the elite and systematic pressure on general masses.

Europe has been a land of fighting tribes for over thousands of years , now divided into small countries , has been the reason of all world wars and can go back to that way very quickly. This is a great interview, very informative. The guest shared some heartfelt comments on his personal decisions and his thoughts on the broader landscape. I wish him all the best in his journey.
The reality is he is a classic first generation immigration story. Ties to the motherland, hopes of returning one day, missing friends & family, nostalgia for the sights and sounds etc, this is to be expected.
But with my experience of a second generation Pakistani, with (now third generation) teenage children, people should realise they are gone for good. There is no coming back. There is no place in Pakistan for people like us and the country & it's elite has nothing to offer us.
My humble experience to those emigrating would be to understand this is a "forever" decision. It will be hard for you, but your future generations will thank you for it.
The problems in Pakistan need to be owned and addressed by the people living there. The emotional guilt and entitlement they deploy on first generation Pakistanis really sickens me. It stops them from mentally moving on and create a rift with their children.

Can feel the pain but grass is not greener on the other side as well (or at least that greener what we think from Pakistan). I would suggest to do the program or at least a research on how many people succeeded in their professions when they left the country. How are they surviving in their social and economical lives and how much debt each person is carrying to live a reasonable life. It is nothing to challenge but there are harsh facts waiting on the other side of the world as well. Lost of identity for generations to come is one of the biggest issues as well. Following religion as it is supposed be is everyday challenge etc. Good job Raftar, you guys are doing excellent job!

100%. I'm also living in west for more than a decade but that inner peace is not there and I'm still trying to do some soul searching. One thing I realized that I can never properly fit in the western world because of my priorities, unless someone becomes completely white washed and lose their religion and identity. One can never have everything they like. We always have to make a sacrifice, but it depends what we sacrifice.

When I left Pakistan almost 45 years ago for higher education to USA I thought it was the best country in the world, and I had every intention of going back.
But now just visiting Pakistan seems scary. Just imagine getting into a simple accident on a road with one of those powerful people and your life could be over. Lack of law and order and justice is my most major concern. I was the first one from my family, but unfortunately, now 90% of my entire family has moved to either Usa or Canada. My one sister who lived in Islamabad told me she will never leave Pakistan. She loves it too much but now she is living in the USA with her son.
What a beautiful country Pakistan is with so many blessings from God, but these corrupt generals and corrupt politicians have run it into the ground . I hope and pray it survives, but i’m afraid the light at the end of the tunnel, maybe turned off due to lack of electricity 😢

The correct word is actually "disheartened".
"Disheartened" is an adjective that means feeling discouraged, disappointed, or dispirited.
Example: "I was disheartened by the news that my favorite restaurant had closed down."
"Dishart" is not a valid word in the English language, and "disharted" is a common misspelling of "disheartened".

I was also the same patriotic person who came back from UK after post graduation in 2017 and started working for the betterment of the country. I wanted to share my experience and knowledge with the youth which is why I jojned higher education sector, apart from that I also wanted to contribute in the economy so I started a business as well. But lack of infrastructure, lack of discipline, law and order and most importantly lack of morality left me so disappointed that i decided to move abroad. Alhamdulillah now I am working in a top Canadian university and living a life in which my basic rights are met.

  • @saadshah5945
    @saadshah5945 28 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Doctor Sb is being too optimistic about the UK. First of all, the cost of living which has made it really difficult for a normal person with standard income of £30k to £35k to buy a house in the UK and at the same time education and healthcare which he underlines as free is not actually free. For Education, children up until the age of 18 receive free education but once the start University they have to pay and that is 9.5k every year depending on whether its a BA and MA. Education which he talks about being free is useless because its only for a certain age group and in order to go further you have to pay and if you don't go further you can't do much with A Levels 😂. Also, Free Healthcare, the National Insurance which a normal person pays on a monthly basis contributes mainly to the Healthcare so in reality nothing is free. Doctor Sb if you and your children are spending their lives in the UK why do you want to be buried in Pakistan as you will have made no contribution to that country 😂

I am living in the city the one you are talking about since 27 years. Things aren't as great as you have described. You are one of those who might be highly paid and living in secure accommodation provided by your employer. Just try to go into sighthill area just a mile away trust me you will say Pakistan is safe. There are many areas where you can't even go during the bright day light. Medical facilities has a waiting list over a year. Train tickets are one of the most expensive in the world because you pay insurance in your ticket that's why they compensate you. Majority of the parents specially the one have daughters don't want them to grow up.

First time listening to your podcast and glad to catch up with this conversation. I too never wanted to settle abroad permanently but when I tried to move back to an rather digitally proactive academic organization that claims to be what not, as a professor, I was literally shocked at the work culture in higher education, breach of research ethics and like so much of unnecessary corruption and the fact that people are so ok with it. I just had to pack my bags and run. All that is just not what I can deal with anymore. So even when I say to my colleagues (in same shoes as mine) sometimes پتھر اپنی اصل جگہ بھاری ہوتا ہے, irrespective of how much recognition you get abroad, the lifestyle, there is always a sense of belonging and ‘to matter’ that lingers … I too dream of returning to Pakistan in a genuine and authentic setting… a dream that’s getting faded with time though

And on this passport the visa questions answers and conditions also are different. At least no any country's immigration stops you or resist against your entry.

What kind of global scholar is this guy who says that that his kids are getting “free” school and “free” lunch and “free”healthcare. And he says he is an expert in the general topic of economics.
Nothing is ever free without someone paying for it. In Scotland, free schooling and free school lunch and free healthcare is supported by taxpayer money.
I hope this guy is paying his taxes in Scotland.

I left Pakistan on 2nd Feb 1972. Things were bad for middle class back then. No job after doing Bsc . No money to bribe or any big time connections. Never been a victim of street crime up till now here. You took street crime as it happens everywhere. Karachi was safe at 2 in the morning. Since then these criminals on the top have destroyed the country. You people have no idea. When we go on vacation we let the police know that we will be gone for 4 weeks. They do extra patrolling around the house. You can’t even think about this in Pakistan. I don’t see bright future for you guys. Last 4 years has been the worst. I agree one institution is too powerful.
