I just visited the JD distillery. The only difference between Old No 7 and Gentleman, is that they run the Gentleman through the sugar maple charcoal TWO times. so it goes through for 12 days instead of 6. It makes a world of difference!
I just tried this for the first last week. Airplane glue, yes. I added a drop of water in my cup and let it sit a while. Big difference. It got sweet, lost the glue note and was pretty good.
"best selling" just means that lots of people drown it in fizzy soft drinks all over the world because it's a recognized brand like Coca Cola. Vodka is probably even more "best selling", but it has no flavor at all and no sipping value (I do drink vodka). I just sampled a JD sampler pack - No7, then Gentleman Jack, then Single Cask. Sure, it's totally drinkable, but DEFINITELY airfix glue! Washed it down with the "ye ole standby" Maker's Mark - it's an order of magnitude better even compared to JD Single Cask. IMHO, of course :)
Buying a bottle of Gentleman's Jack on impulse when I had planned to grab myself a bottle of No. 7 is what opened my eyes to the world of whiskey for the first time. Before then I thought that whiskey was just for if you didn't want to bloat yourself on a massive volume of beer during the night out with your mates. Trying something that wasn't the complete bottom shelf for the first time was quite the revelation.
@@tweezerjam lol I have much more since this comment. Tried whatever kinds of scotch I can get in the U.S., as well as bourbons and local small batch whiskeys. I've grown to really enjoy it. 😁
"Nose"... I always get a little bit excited when we get to this part of the review - it's like, right, now we're getting down to business! I've just recently started to take a proper interest in whiskey, although I have been drinking JD No.7 for years. I've bought JW Green label, and Jura in the last few weeks. The 3 are completely different, but I'd be hard pushed to say which I prefer. They're just different, but I like them all. Love your reviews - entertaining and informative :-)
Thank you for making all these whiskey reviews. Enjoying whiskey is still a quite new hobby to me and I'm glad to learn from you. For a some reason I have never tasted bourbons (except terrible TERRIBLE Jim Beam Red Stag -cherry whiskey) but after this I might give a change for Gentleman Jack. Keep up with good work you're doing. Rgds -Sulosky, Finland
Wow thats trippy. I used to live in Illinois (just moved actually) and when you mentioned the fact about knob creek i was like "thats interesting" and then i looked up and there was a commercial for knob creek on TV. Trippy.
I am quite fond of the no frills Old No.7 standard myself. Love the flavor profile and EVERY variation of Jack Daniel's I've ever tried as well. Gentleman Jack is absolutely delicious too. Had a rare bottle of limited edition Rye a good four years or so back. Was incredible. Now for the first time trying the standard run JD Rye Straight Whiskey at 45%.... Unmistakable distillery character that is Jack Daniels present immediately on the nose and palate----notes of rye bread, banana bread, caramel, sugary spice fruit, sugary smoke, an almost licorice note creeps in too. These flavors morph and open up upon a teaspoon of GOOD water in to a healthy dram of this 90 proof rye.... VERY enjoyable and quite complex for what seems to be a now standard shelf option in the Jack Daniel's range of whiskey........
Great review. I'm a Scot I've drunk more than a few premium malts (but no expert), this is a fine whiskey, it has a niche for sure. Well done JD. The Vimto reference is legendary, I laughed, but you know...it's a good observation. One again, great and enterataining review. Now, time for another double shot of GJ.
Hi Ralfy! I live right down the road from the Jack Daniels distillery. Beautiful place and quaint little town. Interesting note is that the county where this is located is a "dry county" meaning you can't buy what they make there! Not only that but you cant even sample it at the distillery! A bit of hypocrisy there if you will! Never been a JD fan but then I'm just starting out in my journey so I'll keep an open mind. Thanks for your review! CHEERS!
@z32na because every barrel is different. i bought a single barrel and was hugely impressed with it. i ran the next day to the shop and the other 2 they had from the same barrel. i have not encountered a bad single barrel yet. i have tasted and sampled it from 4 different barrels. sure some are better than others but i found in my little experience with this bottle that they have a certain concistency in quality. thats the whole exciting thing with single cask bottlings, search for THE one!!
Thank you for this review. I have been wanting to get into microbrewing for years! Im 26 and just love so much random stuff to do with alcohol. Most people in America dont understand but your reviews sum it up!
I still dig Jack Daniel's even though my palate now prefers more vibrant bourbons and Islay scotches. Gentleman Jack is a good one, just a decent whisk(e)y all around. Loving the content Ralfy!
i just bought a jonnie walker black label, a jack daniels gentleman, i wanted to know if i can keep them unopened for a year and then open it and drink it?
Just out of curiosity but would Gentleman Jack have gotten higher marks if it were higher proof? I keep thinking Gentleman Jack should be at least 90 proof to differentiate a bit more from the basic bottling
I can understand if you don't like J.D., it has a very unique taste but is very high quality. McDonalds is not high quality, you want a quality burger try In-N-Out, it still may not be your favorite taste but you can tell the quality.......(you went the burger route)
Happy to see this review. I hate going into get a bottle of Whiskey and seeing people crowded around the Jack Daniels. I only use Jack No. 7 to remove paint from objects I want to repaint. Thanks Ralfy,
Ralfy, ignore the haters, anyways, what temperature would you recommend for something like this young spirit just in general? I usually keep my main scotch in a semi room temperature, like a cellar, but for something like Crown Royal or JD, just the younger, cheap whiskys, should it be chilled if drinking it neat?
I actually prefer Old N.7 to Johnnie Walker Black these days. I just love bourbon and I've found that for all I spend on scotch, I'm really into that corn-syrupy finish. Maybe too much time on oak? Any bourbon suggestions for me, Ralfy?
Buffalo Trace makes great stuff for the money - Blanton's, or their 10 year. Heaven's Hill - Elijah Craig, and Evan Williams are both easy to get and great value for the money.
have you tried the Jack daniels white rabbit ? i got it from a friend in poland, and honestly i could not taste the difference between the old no 7 and this one . have you any comments on this whiskey ?
Ralfy, would you say that given the fact that Gentleman Jack is far better than No7. That it would be a bit sacreligious to use it in a mixed drink? That its on a level far above that duty and it should be enjoyed neat or with water and savoured like you show here? Asking out of curiosity as I have no background. Asking as well because you gave it what I would consider a relatively high mark for a mass produced spirit. Thanks!
Vimpto i get that. I was given a bottle of Gentleman Jack after a Play I Directed and I do now realise the vimpto quality of the drink. Great review, thank you for your insight!
If Jack Daniels was good enough of Frank Sinatra, its good enough for me. Love old number 7 stirred with ice, strianed and served on the rocks with in a chilled low ball glass. Taste wonderful with a nice smocky cigar flavored electric cigarette liquid. Hits the spot in the winter and works well in a whiskey sour in the summer. Haven't tried the gentleman's jack yet, but if its "light years better" than old number 7 than I'll give it a try.
i have to say i really enjoy your reviews, i'm only 15 but my mum owns a wine bar that sells a wide variety of scotish speyside whiskys and i love to go in and sample them, infact i usually taste the whisky before it goes into the bar because i know my stuff :)
Hi Ralfy, man i wish i could share a day with you sipping some of these great Whiskies! But i have a question: I'm a big fan of the Gentleman, also Eagle Rare sb, Basil Hayden, and Bulleit... Tried many others but i really enjoy sipping on those. Now with such taste what would you recommend as a unique bourbon that you think i may really enjoy? Thanks & Cheers!
Its so weird and such a shame for myself because im new to whiskeys and i love them but I once tastes a 12 years old single malt and then jack daniels old number 7 and couldn't tell the difference. I wonder, will my tastes buds developpe in time ??
Knob Creek is also the location in Kentucky where we hold an annual machine gun shoot late summer every year. After a full day on the range, GJ is on the menu after the barbecue.
I don't care what you say, JD ole' number 7 is still one of the best sipping whiskey's there is. I think it's made for people that don't have the time or desire to sit around smelling their whiskey and talking about it....
Old number 7 is a great whiskey for winter or after a rough day. Very warm sweet flavor. I'm sure there are better ones out there but just a personal favorite. Good review though mate. Never had gentalmen Jack before probably won't after your review.
Dear Ralfy, I found in a local retailer an older bottle of Gentleman Jack. As you mentioned in Whisky Review 145 the marriage continues in the bottle. This bottle I suspect to be from the late 90s, early 2000s. Would it be worth a buy, or do you think that it'd be very similar to the current production
Just found your most excellent channel! I grew up sipping my Dad's Scotches. I really didn't like them then, just curious I guess but I love them now. Just bought a bottle of 18 Year The Glenlivet and I have to say I am a bit disappointed. I wanted to love it but I was expecting more. I have a bottle of the Nadura which I think I favor over the 18 YR. I also really enjoy J.D. single barrel. Very flavorful, especially for the price! Thanks for the great info!!!
Too many net and YT reviewers are pretentious....they act all knowing and haughty and dont know where their own arses are. Ralfy is not one of them I can happily say. I love seeing you do American drinks. Id love more of them.
love your reviews, im a big fan on gentleman jack not so much no7... i just wondered have you ever reviewed or what you thought of the jack daniels single barrel or silver select
I use Jack Daniel's Old No. 7 Tennessee Whiskey for COOKING ONLY. I use it in a Whiskey cake I make and it is perfect for that! Human consumption not so happy if it's not inside my cake or mixed with Coke!
I recently tried the JD sampler pack - No.7, Gentleman Jack and Single Barrel... Didn't enjoy at all, definitely solventy, even the "premium" bottles. Behind that - cloying one-dimensional vanilla and sweetness. That's just me, I am not questioning others' experience. So I picked up 2 bottles with black labels that look like No.7 imitations - Ezra Brooks 90 proof and Evan Williams Black Label (43%). These are KY straight bourbons and each bottle's just about half-price vs. No.7. And I am so thoroughly enjoying them. I love how there's a malty tangy/fruity note (like in Scotch) behind the sweetness, none of the rubbing alcohol harshness and I only add water to access more flavors (not to dial back the harshness). I am new to bourbons and ryes (as I am to malts), and I have some quality bottles, but I love finding a bottom shelf diamond in the rough like that, you know, things that I can offer to guests on the rocks or as mixer without cringing, yet still enjoy neat. In a way these 2 bourbons even seem to scratch the same itch as the sweet Aberlour 12 does for me.
Ralfy! Can you review Jack Daniels Single Barrel? I am not, at all, a fan of Old No.7 or even Gentlemen Jack, for that matter. But I tried a little sampler bottle of the SB and I was pleasantly surprised. I'd love to hear what you thought of it.
According to Wikipedia (and we can all vouch for its accuracy), Jasper "Jack" Daniel is of both Welsh (on his grandfather's side) and Scottish (on his grandmother's side) descent (actually English, Welsh, Scots-Irish, and Scottish). So I guess we still have the Scots (and the English, Welsh, and Irish) to thank for having a hand in crafting American whiskey.
Ralfy! I’ve tried Uncle Nearest and not many others of its kind but must say it’s my favorite whiskey and wonder if you’ve had it and your thoughts on it if so? Bless you highly and my highest regards to you. You’re brilliant!
Having samplet quite a different variety of whisky now, I came across this and tought I could give it a try. Comparing to the standard jack d its better, but in my opinion, it should still be used for mixing I dont like drinking it neat, maybe some ice cubes.
Ralfy Your being kind to do the american whiskys [ I always did wonder what you thought of them] Its hard to beat a fine scottish or Irish whisky! Is it cold in your new bothy? I can see your breath from time to time. the malt muky muck from minnesota
@CrashMarket Incidentally I haven't tasted old bottles of JD (but if I could find a dusty somewhere I'd definitely pick one up). I actually based my theory on Ralfy's comment that when demand is low, the whiskey tends to be better because the distillery is increasing the quality to bring back the demand (and they would have older supplies available).
No. 7 tastes like Frosted Flakes and acetone. I guess that's why I tend to have it for breakfast

You’re brilliant!
. . . I have never come acrossthe is brand, but will look out for it ! thanks for the regards !
If you had to give JD No. 7 a mark what would it be?
ralfy please show us around ur new home does it have a garden like ur previous home
do you make your own whiskey/poitin/moonshine ?
Having samplet quite a different variety of whisky now, I came across this and tought I could give it a try. Comparing to the standard jack d its better, but in my opinion, it should still be used for mixing I dont like drinking it neat, maybe some ice cubes.
Ralfy Your being kind to do the american whiskys [ I always did wonder what you thought of them] Its hard to beat a fine scottish or Irish whisky! Is it cold in your new bothy? I can see your breath from time to time. the malt muky muck from minnesota

Incidentally I haven't tasted old bottles of JD (but if I could find a dusty somewhere I'd definitely pick one up). I actually based my theory on Ralfy's comment that when demand is low, the whiskey tends to be better because the distillery is increasing the quality to bring back the demand (and they would have older supplies available).
