  • Murwillumbah Town Centre - with Art Deco architecture.
    Come for a 4K virtual walk with me around Murwillumbah town centre, Murwillumbah CBD, in the Northern Rivers NSW region on east coast Australia. Unlike my previous videos, I have not used background music tracks. Rather, I have sought to capture the live ambiance and vibe of the town by recording the natural street sounds in stereo in order to showcase it as the Murwillumbah travel destination (or destination Tweed) or as an entertaining Murwillumbah day trip outing starting from the Gold Coast Australia or Byron Bay. In these current times of travel restrictions, if we can't, in reality, visit the destinations like Murwillumbah, we can nevertheless take a Murwillumbah virtual travel experience by video. So, come visit northern New South Wales country town, Murwillumbah in the Tweed Valley!
    Art Deco Architecture of the Town:
    The footage focuses on the retro appeal of Murwillumbah town centre CBD. It is prominent in its architecture, shopfront windows and facades. There are some fine examples of Art Deco architecture and design displayed in many of the buildings. Also contributing to its charm is street alfresco dining, cafes, pubs, incidental townsfolk and even street buskers. Prior to travel restrictions, a wonderful jazz band regularly played on Sundays in the canopied sidewalk area outside the Courthouse Hotel. What a treat for visiting travellers.
    Location of Murwillumbah:
    Murwillumbah in the Northern Rivers NSW region on east coast Australia and is about thirty minutes’ drive from the Queensland Gold Coast, 40 minutes from Byron Bay, 30 mins from Mullumbimby and 45 mins from Nimbin. The route follows the Tweed River and sugar cane fields along the way. Murwillumbah is situated adjacent to a fertile volcanic soil flood plain inside the long since extinct Tweed Valley Volcano caldera. Sugar cane, soybeans and cattle are the main agricultural industries. Distinctively shaped Mount Warning, aka Wollumbin, the 1,156 m elevation remnant core of the volcano is conspicuous in the Tweed Valley.
    History:
    In the 1840s, extracting timber from the region was the dominant activity in the area. Dramatically, most of the Murwillumbah town centre was burned to the ground by fire in 1907. In 1978, the Bank of New South Wales, the building now occupied by the Westpac Bank, was broken into by the ‘Magnetic Drill Gang’ who got away with $1.7 million cash. They were never caught.
    Floods:
    Periodically, the Tweed river and Rous River overflow their banks during periods of torrential rainfall. Prior to a flood wall being built to protect the town, floodwaters reached nearly up to the Murwillumbah town centre shop awnings. The Murwillumbah flood levee or Murwillumbah flood wall has become known as the Murwillumbah Graffiti Wall. It’s not actually graffiti but rather is urban street art created by talented artists that decorates it. The highest recorded flood occurred in 2017 when the water rose to about 40 cm short of the 6.3 m levee. I have personally experienced the 2013, 2014 and 2017 floods.
    Accommodation:
    In the town centre there is the 4.5-star Imperial Hotel.
    At the top Wollumbin Street is the 3.7-star Murwillumbah Motor Inn.
    A little out of town there is the 4.6-star Gallery Motel and the 4.1-star Tweed River Motel.
    Another option is to seek accommodation on the lower Gold Coast and visit as a Murwillumbah day trip.
    Murwillumbah Arts, Market Events and Travel Events:
    Murwillumbah Showground Farmers Markets are held in the Show Ground every Wednesday.
    Murwillumbah Makers & Finders Market is held in Knox Park on the 3rd Saturday of each month, 9am - 2 pm . (www.makersandfindersmarket.com)
    Adjacent to the Regent Cinema is the M|Arts Precinct building behind a classic Art Deco façade. This venue houses fascinating artists and makers and their novel studios set up inside creatively renovated shipping containers. m-arts.com.au/
    Just on the outskirts of town is the modern Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Centre which includes a very pleasant Gallery Café and a Gallery Shop.
    The Murwillumbah Arts Trail is an inspiring annual event which follows a trail of venues around town. This is a great activity for travelers and locals alike.
    The highly popular event of the Murwillumbah Annual Show is held by the Tweed River Agricultural Society. People travel from afar to enjoy and participate in this event.

      I agree with you wholeheartedly VaucluseVanguard. It's also the case for me. It's my adopted town too. I gotta say, 'Woo Woo Bah' is a little easier to spell. People in telephone call centres for instance, sometimes have some trouble with the spelling of 'Murwillumbah'. Cheers.

    Grew up in & around Murbah, I worked in the N.A.B. during the time it had 2 branches & we were unifying them to the current location. My sister worked in the CommBank & was the Banana Festival CommBank entrant.
    Mum & Dad owned & rsn Possum’s Coffee Lounge which was nestled it with Wrights Dry Cleaners & Wombat Books, opposite the Court house & just up from my mate’s family news agency, Hill’s news agency.
    I ended up working at Murwillumbah Music & Tandy Electronics when it was in the Plaza next to Ingrid’s cafe, Take 5.
    Murwillumbah is an Aboriginal word meaning
    Mur - Many
    Willum - Possum
    Bah - Place
    Hence lending the name to Mum & Dad’s coffee lounge.
    One day I’ll be back & that time for good.

      Hi DRW Custom. Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a comment. I think I detect some nostalgia for our lovely place of many possums. My history here doesn't go back very far but I love Murwillumbah. I'm retired now and have decisively set down roots here. I hope you can, in time, find your way back here. Until then, I wish you good cheer.

    Aw Murbah, I lived there in 2014-15, it's an odd little town, or ecclectic is a better term to describe it. My daughter went to the Murbah public school which she enjoyed, we specifically lived out at Mt Warning. Tweed Valley etc Murbah is a very special area, the country is so beautiful and there is a strong spiritual energy there. I've been meaning to go back for a visit as I have family there. Great video 👍🏽

    • @gavinhartmedia
      @gavinhartmedia  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Smurfy Lee, thanks for commenting. Yes I think the whole Northern Rivers is probably eclectic. The kinds of spiritual energy are diverse. I agree that the natural beauty of the region is exceptional; that is one reason I make videos of it and it's towns, markets and villages. Sadly the streets are piled with stinking, sodden rubbish at the moment so the place is not looking it's best. However, as has always happened with previous floods, people rise up and recover from the crises.

      Zan K, I'm so glad you liked my video of Murbah but I'm also so sorry that you are are homesick and not able to return at the present time. I do know what it feels like to go away and return. I went away to the MacLeay Island for thee years but I got an opportunity to come back and I'm so glad I did. When I drove down the Tweed Valley Way towards Murbah, I experienced a wonderful feeling of coming home. I'm definitely not going to leave again. I hope you too get such an opportunity to come back and that then your tears will be turned to joy. Keep your spirits up and be patient for the time being. I've made other videos in the Northern Rivers region, including some more in Murwillumbah. Check out this playlist: th-cam.com/play/PLi9ubMC9MO43iySlRAhiKOm0byyg83xaz.html

      It already is run over. When I lived there in the mid-90s it was still a sleepy farming town, bananas and sugar cane. There were already acupuncturists and massage therapists, but the farmers still owned the place. It didn't have upscale boutiques and patios or even KFC.

      @gavinhartmedia  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WilliamHenryAlbert My drone came with some filters. I think they are ND filters. I don't have filters for the Pocket 2. I did use a polarizing filter and some ND's with my old Nikon D70 SLR. I liked the way the polarizing filter could show either reflections or transparency with water. I used the ND's for slow shutter silk effect on moving water). My Pocket 2 has a tendency to over expose on bright parts like sky for instance. I probably should get some filters for that but not sure if it would be just as easy to wind in some -ve eV exposure. I think you can lose some picture 'punchiness' though if you do that. What do you reckon would be best, filters or manual exposure? (mind you, I have a tendency to be lazy and just use default settings. ha ha!

      Thank you for commenting Sharon. In some ways, changes to a town over time can cause disappointment for us, even sadness. It's a bit like having our past stolen from us. I suppose all we can do is make the best of what we now have. No one is going to pull down the bridge and bring back the ferry.. I left my childhood town because over time, there were so many changes, making it almost unrecognisable.

    Busy town and definately Art Deco. Few more cafes have opened up but its basically the same place. Main Shopping supermarket needs a major facelift. Stuck with Coles when it gets busy you are tripping over everyone. The property prices have gone through the roof much to Agents delight! A small 2 bedroom fibro thats needs a renovation can sell for 900k plus. a year or so ago it was half that. Silly out of towners are paying anything in a frenzy to leave Sydney...sucked in.

      I think it's tragic that housing affordability in our country so reprehensibly a case of injustice. I think we all know the reasons and I prefer not to get drawn into that matter. No doubt there are some suckers. It's easy, through circumstances that life throws at you to become a loser. I do however understand how folk would want to escape from the noose of inability to survive in places of wildly inflated house prices. I must say that I would take a sympathetic view towards victims in dire straights. Wouldn't we be just as bad as the greedy money grabbers if we were to deny someone a lifeline, while at the same time feeling that Murwillumbah belongs to us, exclusively? It's also easy to feel bitter. In the face of frustration, the garbage of a broken world, and a broken humanity, I'd rather try to face our condition with hopefulness. Thanks for commenting Belle! I'm interested in peoples views and I appreciate all feedback.

      @@gavinhartmedia i agree,,,i have seen prices rise and fall several times in Murwillumbah. or Murwillumbimby as I now call it (same ridiculous price range). As far as people wanting to escape wildly priced cities well Murbah is wildy priced so no escape there. Lets see what happens when prices stagnate or fall the agents can stop rubbing there greedy paws together. In fact if you want to sell your Murbah home just do it yourself and save a few bob. it wont be hard to sell. Yep I agree its a broken world putting it mildly and escapism is plan for most now. Getting the fricken Govt and media out of our face would help too.

    • @gavinhartmedia
      @gavinhartmedia  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@belleparker2046 I've heard the housing price rises are even worse in Byron Bay. Only the wealthy can afford to buy there now. I guess I'm not following the market closely as I'm not intending to move. Real estate sales agents have to be able to ride a roller coaster. Apart from the boom times they have very lean seasons as well. Many need to draw on capital savings to tide them over. There is a high casualty rate in that occupation. Regarding Govt. and Media, I think they have contributed to the making of a culture of fear. Folk have ended up becoming paranoid and depressed. Thanks for your further comments Belle :)
