I’ve seen this films several times since the first time during covid! Hit me hard as someone nostalgic and sentimental…’as a filmmaker leaving my hometown to make films. As someone romantic. But yeah this is such an important and beautiful film. I recently had the chance to see it at the academy theatre in LA with Morricone’s children, Mr. Tornatore and executive members of Cinecitta in attendance. I even ran into him after the screening and thanked him.
YES. Yes, it's the most beautiful ever made, and my #1. Yes, it's the most beautiful score ever made. Yes, you should see the versions in the order you suggested. Yes, there's bonus if you know the classic movies (I didn't the first time). Yes, it's your best video so far. My only question is: is there some sort of acceleration in audio or video? I mean, other than the film being ahead of its time?
Thank you!! I love that this is your #1 favorite movie, it really is SO incredible. Are you asking if I feel like Cinema Paradiso did anything revolutionary in the audio or video departments? If so I would say its best contribution to the history of cinema is its groundbreaking editing, particularly the kissing scene. That montage influenced so many people, and is actually a big inspiration for me too. I love how it’s edited, how it celebrates cinema, and how it always inspires me to drop everything and edit a video essay on movies :) By the way, your comment made my day! Thank you very much for always sharing your thoughts on the videos.
Yes, I totally agree - Cinema Paradiso is my very favorite movie. I saw it first in London and, back then, had no way to get the music right away. The main theme still keeps running through my brain. How wonderful to see this ode to my favorite movie.
Films were a great source of comfort for me growing up as a queer kid in WV surrounded by a lot of conservative religious values. I first saw CINEMA PARADISO when I was 13. I had rented it from my local library which had an amazingly curated film selection. At the time, I took note that it came out the year I was born so I felt a weird kinship to it already. I certainly loved the movie as I watched it but when I got to the famous ending scene, you would’ve thought that my eyes were faucets just leaking incessantly. It was simply…beautiful. And I do consider it my favorite ending to a film ever. And that score? Glorious.
That’s a wonderful story, thank you for sharing it. I’ll never stop appreciating the power of movies, and Cinema Paradiso will forever be one of the greats 😊
I agree, it’s definitely more melancholy and cynical, but I appreciate that it also gives a bit more closure to the film. Overall, though, I prefer the theatrical cut too! Thanks for watching :)
Cinema Paradisio has a great iconic music score, but its certainly not "easily" maestro Ennio Morricone's best work... A Fistful of Dollars For A Few Dollars More The Good The Bad & The Ugly Two Mules For Sister Sara Once Upon A Time In The West Once Upon A Time In America Days Of Heaven The Untouchables The Mission Casualties Of War Malena Legend Of 1900 That's some pretty monumental competition for best composition, and personally I'd go with his psychoogically nuanced work on Adrian Lyne's sublime adaptation of Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita for the win. Anyway, Snow Falling on Cedars is the most beautiful movie.
All great scores! I’d also throw in the highly underrated Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion as one worthy of praise. Thank you for watching the video and commenting :)
I’m so happy to hear that! I’d love for you to report back if you ever watch it and I would love to hear your thoughts 😊 Thanks for watching as always :)
Just watched the 2 hour version. Wow, just beautiful. ❤ Gave it a 5 star review on LB. What a fantastic movie! Thanks for showing me this. I also have the 3 hour director’s cut but I’ll save that for my rewatch. 😊
Yay, I’m so so glad you liked it!! Thanks for letting me know, that makes me so happy 😊 I look forward to hearing how you like the extended version if you watch it, they’re very different to be sure :)

That’s a wonderful anecdote and I would have loved to attend that screening too. Thanks for sharing your connection to this amazing film :)

Amazing video! This movie is a must watch
This music immediately breaks my heart when I hear it 😭😭😭
Me too :( The love theme is seriously one of the most beautiful compositions I’ve ever heard

I made the mistake of watching the directors cut first… Never watch the directors cut of this. It’s so cynical and just kind of mean.

Great video!
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it!
This movie was the very first foreign film I ever saw! I definitely need to give it a rewatch 😊
