    One of the most important thing in tennis is INTENTION. I think it helps a lot when serving and not only. For the forhand and backhand it's the same story.. that's why when we change our minds the ball goes nowhere. Am I right?

    • @EssentialTennis
      @EssentialTennis  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree completely, Catalin. Lots of players don't aim at all, or they pick a super general target like "the box" which doesn't help them improve their precision. Intention and specificity are key! -Ian

    Fantastic well done one of the best explanation I came a cross “timing is the key “ also if I could explain the way the racket supposed to be hold on the serve we know is the continental grip but the way holding the racket is important to so we can make that pronation on the contact. Thank you

  • @mat3271
    @mat3271 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    From supination to pronation part of the serve, the hitting side of the racket rotates from left perpendicular to almost right perpendicular which gives you a wide left to right range of target options. Going back to my question do you "lock" the correct angle, momentarily to get a better chance of hitting to your intended target.. Of course after you feel that you have made contact with the ball, you would aggressively pronate to execute the serve smoothly or even course correct "bend" the ball back down, if needed. The reason why I mention this is that this is how I hit my western forehand sometimes....ie when the ball is low to the forehand I slightly open the racket and "lock" that angle in order to clear the net but finish with heavy topspin to make sure it stays in..

    this is just awesome!
    As a junior player I used to have seemingly insurmountable problems with the inconsistency of my serve. Sometimes I was able to make 2 or 3 double faults per game (that is, when it went long enough...). It was a huge drawback - a real show stopper - super frustrating, embarrassing and devastating. I had numerous trainers who all failed to help me. In my desperation I went an endless number of afternoons serving hundreds of serves each session to finally only hurt my shoulder. No success. My serve was still an unreliable piece of crap.
    My problem was: I didn't feel the serve. Serving felt like numb. I had no connection with the area I was targeting. The sort of feel that we usually have when playing ground strokes or volleys was completely absent. A Tennis player normally feels the target as if he was connected to it by invisible wires - at least that's how I perceive this.
    After thinking and analyzing my problem I finally decided to return back to the very basics. I did exactly what is shown in the 2nd half of this video. I called it "laying wires" to relearn my serve and to develop a feel for the targets from ground up. My serve started to improve noticeably. I wished I had someone teaching me like you do when it actually really mattered :-)
    This video I'd consider the single most important video on how to learn to serve I've ever seen. And it's the best set of trainer instructions on how to practice service targeting I've ever heard.

    What I love about this first drill, is that my back yard is just big enough that I can do the drill at home. If I were at a tennis court, the temptation would be just too great to swing away hitting full serves. However at home it is easy to stick to the drill, and even enjoy it

  • @80ajp
    @80ajp 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Team ETBesides the muscle memory that is also dependent on the speed for the racket swing (or maybe more subconscious awareness of arm and racket position and correlation between them ). I guess that the accuracy also depend on how consistently we have the same distance to the ball and how much we jump in to the court (besides up) and how much we uncoil. So the angel between upper torso and the direction we swing the arm towards the ball. Or maybe experience and good ball judgement makes us able to jump the right distance, to uncoil the same amount and have position the torso in the same angle towards the target. But given that even the pros dont have a perfect ball toss and conditions can make it impossible to be very accurate anyways but the seem to have good accuracy even in tough conditions so I guess all body parts through the chain will try to adjust if we are relaxed and focused enough to allow it. Thx for posting videos here!

    Hey Ian, you are right, but focus comes into play. If i focus and aim for the T i will hit the T, but if im not focused, i cant really hit my mark. Its like hitting your serve, but thinking of the T as a general area...

  • @kangspike7408
    @kangspike7408 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    1. Accuracy comes from the angle of the racket face. Where the face points the ball goes.
    - a 12-degree change is enough for the ball to go from the T zone to the corner
    - Practice slowly sending the ball to the center line and make sure muscle memory remember.
    2. Drills. Slice the box into 4 vertical parts.
    - Start at the end of your serve box and work your way back.

    Ian, during the swing do you ever "lock" the angle once you feel it is correct value....or do you time the swing to reach angle as it naturally rotates from left to right for a righty?

    • @EssentialTennis
      @EssentialTennis  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question, Matthew. I would strongly, strongly encourage you to NOT try and "lock" anything in place. Doing so will dramatically increase tension, which will kill your smoothness and efficiency. For me, it's most definitely a matter of timing. -Ian

      Happy you've found something that works for you, but your serve would be even better with a continental grip! This video explains why: th-cam.com/video/FKtqaKjZVPs/w-d-xo.html

      I will. There, just did.
      The fundamental claim he makes in the video is false.
      The ball goes where the racquet face is pointing if and only if the swing path is following the same direction, unless the racquet speed is low, then the face angle will be more of a factor in the direction of the ball.
      If there is a discrepancy between the swing path and face angle it creates spin on the ball, especially with increasing speeds.

      This dislikes are from those who still cannot figure the serve out... They dislike their own performance, you see.
      These lessons are fantastic!

    Ian doesn't know how to play

  • @zandemen
    @zandemen 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    False. The path, speed and angle all determine the trajectory of the ball.
    By having an incongruency between the path of the swing and the angle of the face, you impart spin on the ball.

    • @zandemen
      @zandemen 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      7:35 is proof. Federer has his racquet face to the left, his swing path to the right. The ball goes down the middle, with spin. If you're going to make a claim like the ball goes to the racquet face, cherry pick a flat serve which actually shows that.

      th-cam.com/video/e73vn7e2Ivw/w-d-xo.html watch Nadal hit a top spin forehand with the racquet face closed so much he would hit the ball to the service line of his own side if your theory were true.
