I Am A Duck True. Let me refrase: Do the filters affect the airspeed from the fan more if they are mounted before or after the fan? Reason the airspeed from the fan when filter is mounted before (intake) the fan should be affected (if RPM is unchanged) but the static air pressure over the filter should increase. But, moving the filter after (exhaust) the fan, the filter should affect the air speed. Note that this might vary between high airflow fans and static preassure fans and theoretically air flow should stay fairly consistent. Also mounting the filter close to the fan forces more air through the filter instead of deflecting it.

jay, i understand of thermodynamics enough to say that, the upper side fan is pushing hot air to de bottom side (radiator) fans. So you are just recycling hot air in your case and through your front rad.. I know people are goning to say that the warm air is suposed to go up but this effect wont beat the sucction power of lower fan, and the front panel blocking the partially the fans helps this.. I would put the front fans in the same direction and another fan on the top for exhaust (if possible). Cheers from Brazil!
this is probably one of the coolest looking setups ive seen in a looong while. i can 100% agree on this case restrictment tho. Modern cases are mostly SO BAD for cooling. They are so locked up most of the time. in mine i had a fron glass panel with some intakes at the side and i legit kicked out that glued in glass panel alltogether and just put a magnetic mesh on there for intake dust. Temps went down so much
I have this case in both the shift and shift X. I had the same problem and did the same as you did. Thank you Modmymods. There was one more thing that helped me, it may be excessive but I am a enthusiast. I noticed that the bottom slot breathes better than the front panel slot for 120 AIO's. So you can prioritize which needs more cooling depending on your CPU and GPU combo you are running. I also found that if I closed off the open space on the sides of the radiator (top and bottom) withe either cheap electrical tape, or later with some rubberized foam adhesive strips I was able to limit the amount of air being recycled from the case into that front radiator. There is also a divider (thin plastic piece), that doesn't separate the air flow from both the front fans (ie, if one is exhaust and the other is intake, that lower fan will recycle more air from the case) so I added more rubberized foam strips. It was only a few degrees difference but even the 3-4 C gain I had helped. Its is a really hot case. I ended up going with the shift X for the final build with a Hardware Labs GTX 280mm rad and custom loop. Works great so far as a HTPC/Gaming rig for the living room. I got 4 builds at home now and I'm only happy with 2...so onward we go. Next one will be in the Silverstone Raven RVZ01 with a 240 and 120 mm rad custom loop I believe. Sadly covid 19 has made shipping of parts horrible right now. BTW love your channel and the work you do. Thank you.
Interesting that this video just came out today. Yesterday I modded the front of my case. I have a Thermaltake Versa J25 RGB Tempered Glass Mid-Tower ATX Case. Temps dropped around 10-15c on both my Gigabyte RTX2070 Gaming OC video card, and my Cooler Master MasterLiquid Lite 240 RGB Liquid CPU Cooler cooled Ryzen 5 3600 CPU. Not only is it cooling much better, it looks cooler also. :) Keep these great videos coming guys.

Jay, this video was amazing when it came to learning on how restrictive filters can be. I am one who has always liked to use filters to limit the amount of dust buildup but holy sh** i am changing the way i think. Def thumbs up on this video.
In one video, with visual demonstrations, you explained why my CPU temps on an overclocked 7700k (I know they run hot) was increased dramatically when I installed a "brand name" Dust Filter Kit. I did similar tests after this video, and the airflow was significantly down. I would rather clean my rig every 3-6 months than restrict performance because "I'm too lazy to dust my investment."
Question: How much would a divider piece inside the custom panel between intake and exhaust affect the temperatures? If used like shown, you would have bypassed air from the exhaust pulled back in by the intake inside/behind the panel, I assume.
Jay Congrats on the ifixit follow. What a difference a panel can make. Too bad that that they couldn't add fan mounts to those side panels if there is room for them that is with that you could have another exhaust fan.
Keep it up Jay! I've been watching your videos for a while now and was wondering about modding something like a Dell Optiplex and then putting a psu and GPU in it for an inexpensive gaming PC that looks cool and preforms well.
By all means go for it! Turned my Dell XPS 8920 into a pretty solid gaming machine by doing just that and later moving all the parts into a new NZXT case with a Corsair aio.
switch the top front fan to intake, thats the way the mod my mods cover was meant to be intake, even water cooled needs more airflow!! I love Phanteks cases, but they decided to choke them, so I went with Aerocool and I love it!!
The mesh side panels can also be beneficial for water cooled builda. I configured all fans as exhaust so fresh air is being pulled in through the mesh-fabric, which works pretty well.
Can we get a bloopers only video every now and then? I come back time and again just to see those small bits of Jay's hilarious reactions to small things.

Like Riley or something. Lol. Awesome job guys!
you convinced me to get rid of the filters on my itx build, air cooled so I expect it'll be a bit of an improvement.... maybe I'll test and compare eventually, but did the basic fan no filter and fan with filter test, wasn't as bad as that one but cut about half the air.
Jay, I have a ghetto way to get rid of non black cables that can\t be changed out. Take a black Sharpie and go over the colored cables you can then make them black with the Sharpie it works pretty well and with your pain skills you can make it look good.
I like the free flow of no filter as well, but usually there's a compromise. Am I the only one that thinks, "Filter the intake fans and have 6 of them, Don't filter the output fans and have 2 of them".. It's all about balance isn't it? Obviously in this build you only have 4 fan slots to work with, but can't you filter the 3 intake and not the 1 output? Great video Jay, keep up the good content : )
I think his genuine PSA on of iFixit following him was the best of the whole video (Sorry Phil). Maybe iFixit formally begins to be a channel sponsor and not a "my wife bought me this kit on father day" gag.
I'm building my own case from scratch. Using metal, plexiglas with a high high resist material and high temp paint coat, and making it to the size and style I want. Expensive, but worth it in the long run...
^high temp resistant material with high temp resistant paint. Also, cutting out fan holes, cable connections, the works. By the time I'm finished with it, it will not only look like a work of art, but also have plenty of room for future upgrades (changing from AIO and gpu fans to all water cool, changing out to bigger GPU's, etc.
I couldn't wait for someone to make a premilled front panel available so I had mine CNCed with vents. I've found the BEST configuration is to have the GPU 120mm AIO in the top front, the CPU AIO in the bottom front. These are set to exhaust with 15mm slim fans. Then have an intake fan at the bottom of the case. This way the only dust filter needed is at the bottom (where air is always cool and not heat contaminated by the exhaust air). Then you also don't need the dust filters in the front at all. Note: for a 120mm AIO to work at the top front, the AIO depth needs to be max 29.6mm.
I bought a Deepcool Matrixx 50 case for $60 a couple of months ago. I love the aesthetics and it looks more expensive than what it is. My only complaint is the front panel. It's tempered glass with mesh the entire height on both sides of the panel and about an inch or so gap at the bottom. I called Deepcool to see if they had an alternative front panel with mesh in place of the glass. They don't.
I'd like a video about how that mini screen was done. That is cool!

There is actually a divider in the original side panel :)
Was wondering the same thing the entire video too. That cycle of hot air is not good at all.
Phil that little RPI screen is f'in genius. Totally stealing that idea.
youre welcome jay, lol, i reached out to mod my mods as one of my buddies is part of them and i told them about the previous video.
I am so sold on this case with the new front panel. Awesome stuff
Wait let me get this straight Your "Wife" bought you a "IFixIt" kit for "Father's Day"..
Followed by: "-Who's your daddy now?" :P
Alot of the things he says feel like lies. I mean just say where its from or dont it dont matter.
Keeper.
He is the father of her children. It is pretty normal actually
Why not? You say this like it is weird to you.
The perfect budget gaming pc
By all means go for it! Turned my Dell XPS 8920 into a pretty solid gaming machine by doing just that and later moving all the parts into a new NZXT case with a Corsair aio.
Jay... Great test brotha.... Now I will new checking my airflow on my system to optimize it... Thanks man....
i like JayzTwoCents seems like a stand up guy
Not when he's sitting down
Colin Java HAHA! *Wheeze* HA! *Wheeze* that’s good!
switch the top front fan to intake, thats the way the mod my mods cover was meant to be intake, even water cooled needs more airflow!! I love Phanteks cases, but they decided to choke them, so I went with Aerocool and I love it!!
Did you break the modmymods website by mentioning them?
I think we hugged it to death.
Yep!
The mesh side panels can also be beneficial for water cooled builda. I configured all fans as exhaust so fresh air is being pulled in through the mesh-fabric, which works pretty well.
Geebus, and i thought that my three ML40 PRO intakes were loud at 100%.
This is great news! I'm currently doing a custom loop Evolv Shift X build and I was hoping they would make new panels.
Me: See's when Jay held PC by the graphics card.
Also me: remembers the pain... Lol
1:30
sad
@@Rreyyaaann Yah
I need Phils home-made monitor for my PC... Great work as always guys.
damn dude you need to overhaul my pc lol
id recommend a filter like a window screen for bugs. you still have to clean your system just less, and it doesnt restrict airflow much at all
Dude, you're such a modder that you just modded Mod My Mods' mod!
Jay just start making parts.
Already have your TwoCents on the reg
Worlds needs:
Jay's case
Jay's' cooler, etc
Jays EVERYTHING
"I'm right here Jay!" 😂
Can we get a bloopers only video every now and then?
I come back time and again just to see those small bits of Jay's hilarious reactions to small things.
I think everyone who just watched this crashed ModMyMods website. I can't get to their site.
Yeah they just said so on twatter lol
We are working on getting the site stable from all the new users
Hey Jay, a filter before the fan has a very different effect on air flow than when placed after the fan.
Why would you filter air coming out of the system anyway
Some might run it as an intake.
These Good Guy Jay videos are freaking great keep it up Jay an Phil!!!
You modded Mod My Mod's mod...
Modception.
You guys should do a bloopers compilation some day. This stuff is priceless.
The last time I was this early, I turned into a zygote.
I thought you were gonna say crip
jay getting excited over ifixit following him was great.
TH-cam pet peeve of mine: talking about "the first video" and not including as link to the first video.
He acknowledged his constant forgetting to link the video in a video fairly recently.
His last speed build.
@@theindooroutdoorsman It's not just Jay though, and some people will not post a link so you try to do searches and the thumbnail doesn't match what you're looking for. I just give up half the time.
There you go! I just typed the name of the case on the channel search

So, I’m all about keeping my room clean and protecting the env from the massive dust bunnies (they’re scary and reek havoc on the environment), but filtering an exhaust fan may just be, imho, a way to get your wife/mom/significant other to buy you new stuff when you MASSIVELY overheat...lol. You guys are so damn funny. Makes my day to watch you and Phil. PS - Phil should be in more vids with you. He’s your Luke...oh wait, Luke’s not there anymore...who’s that other guy? Like Riley or something. Lol. Awesome job guys!
I loved that mini screen! Can we have a how to guide?
Just bought the Air model with mesh sides, it's been great for an all air cooled build.
Congrats on finally getting that iFixit sponsorship.
Imagine just hanging with Jay and Phil for a day, not sure anyone can match their hilarious authenticity.
that temp screen in the case is ahead of the game phil I need that in all my builds going forward
you convinced me to get rid of the filters on my itx build, air cooled so I expect it'll be a bit of an improvement.... maybe I'll test and compare eventually, but did the basic fan no filter and fan with filter test, wasn't as bad as that one but cut about half the air.
You inspire me to do my own custom mods! Love ya Jay
Exhaust out bottom, 2 sides as Intakes. Always gave me best results
I'm so glad I've been in this channel long enough to watch the iFixit meme develop from its infancy.
I think his genuine PSA on of iFixit following him was the best of the whole video (Sorry Phil). Maybe iFixit formally begins to be a channel sponsor and not a "my wife bought me this kit on father day" gag.
Hello from 2020. This video made me remove all my mesh filters. What a difference..
They don't.
Prolly 1 of the best builds. Thx mods
I adore my iFixit kit as well. Everything I need in one bag.
