First as a one-verse song in Georg Forster's "Frische Teutsche Liedlein V", 1556. The other stanzas were written after 1900 in the bourgeois youth movement to the melody "Unser liebe Frau vom kalten Brunnen", popular in the 16th century.

    Unser liebe Fraue
    vom kalten Bronnen,
    Bescher uns armen Landsknecht
    ein´ warme Sonnen!
    Dass wir nit erfrieren,
    gehn in des Wirtes Haus
    wir ein mit vollem Säckel,
    mit leerem wieder aus.
    Die Drummen, die Drummen,
    Lärman, lärman, lärman,
    heiridiridiran, ridiran
    Ride Landsknecht voran.
    Unser liebe Fraue
    vom kalten Bronnen,
    bescher’ uns armen Landsknecht
    ein’ warme Sonnen!
    Dass wir nit erfrieren,
    iieh’n wir dem Bauermann
    das wullen Hemd vom Leibe,
    das steht ihm übel an.
    Die Drummen, die Drummen…
    Wir schlucken Staub beim Wandern
    der Säckel hängt uns hohl
    der Kaiser schluckt ganz Flandern
    bekomm’s ihm ewig wohl
    Er denkt beim Länderschmause
    wie er die Welt erwürb
mir wohnt ein Lieb zu Hause
    das weinte, wenn ich stürb
    Die Drummen, die Drummen…
    Trommler schlägt Parade,
    die seid’nen Fahnen weh’n,
jetzt heißt’s auf Glück und Gnade
    ins Feld marschieren geh’n.
    Korn reift auf den Feldern,
es schnappt der Hecht im Strom,
heiß weht der Wind von Geldern,
    herauf gen Berg op Zoom
    Die Drummen, die Drummen…
    Unser liebe Fraue
    vom kalten Bronnen,
    bescher’ uns armen Landsknecht

Gleiche Blutlinie. @@hanz2904 You know why we will never be left alone in peace? We are the beating heart of Europe. "Whoever dominates Germany, dominates Europe and thus dominates the world". Big elites always tried and will continue to try and dominate us either through economical pressure or war. You can see this especially shortly before 1914 and before 1939. We had a flourishing economy and everything we could dream of, but "some" animals on this planet don't like it when Germany can provide for itself and they are not gaining anything from us because of it. That's a big reason why globalism will be in the near future the final nail in the coffin of Germany as we know it. Oh, and before we had big banksters and elites trying to ruin us, there was the vatican constantly trying to maximize income. Or countries that surround us, trying to take land from us.

From 1:32 onwards..... This song is about the german mercenaries who were fighting in the eighty years war against the spanish occupier in the Netherlands. "Heiss weht der wind von Geldern" (German city Geldern and the Dutch province Gelderland were heavily related) "Herauf gen Berg op Zoom" (Bergen op Zoom was one of the most important cities in the Netherlands when overcoming the Spanish occupier). Flanders(Belgium) was the south region in the time of the "Spanish Netherlands".

Who was Charles V? Born in Ghent, son of Prince Philip of Hasburg and Princess Jeanne of Spain. As such, he inherited the territories of Netherland, Spain, and a lot of others (Corsica, Sicily, Naples...) . His son Philip II later inherited them. The Prince of Orange took these territories from his rightful king, Philip II.
It was not a war of independence, but a rebellion against the legitimate king.
There were more Dutch fighting in Philip II's troops than those of the Prince of Orange, who relied on German, French and English mercenaries.

I'm very interested in early German history but I've only read up on a little of it. I understand this is 16th century along with the songs that mention Florian Geyer and Georg von Frundsberg. What roles in history did they play that would cause the Germans in WW2 to use them as cultural heroes to represent certain SS divisions. I'm not trying to get political I'm just trying to get a cultural understanding that has fascinated me for many years. I am very intrigued by German history and would absolutely love to just know all about it! Thanks!

Ok, thanks for your reply! I've always been fascinated by German culture since I was really young. I've gained basically a life's knowledge of random pieces and have actually developed the ability to pronounce most German words correctly in full sentences but I only understand very little. I love the German language and listen to many German marches, a lot from what you've posted, just to hear the language. One thing on my bucket list is to be able to read a novel in German and understand the diction, dialect, and cultural emphasis in the writing. Sadly, the cultural history in printed or digital resource is scarce that it's almost a thing where you have to know somebody who's German that can explain the culture to you and sadly this American of Anglo-Celt decent doesn't know anyone who is German...

they were the first explicitly german fighting force, they would see german mercenarys serving a non german lord as traitor and not hesitate to slay them and would not even take them for ransom but kill them on the spot,
also even though many landsknechts came form the lower ranks of nobility, most of them were common man, townsmen, who were trained in sword and pike drills to defend their hometowns, and as the new swiss pikedrill emegerd they were recruited into the landsknechts fähnlein(regiments) not as levies or such but as free men, and then were trained in the swiss style and formed the order of the landknechts. which was founded by emperor maximilian as a non monastic fighting order

    • @cemarslan2972

On top of what was said below about the Landsknechts, Florian Geyer fought in the German Peasants' War, commanding the only company of heavy cavalry in European history to fight supporting a peasant revolt. National Socialism was fairly populistic and didn't exactly love the aristocracy, as well as was fiercely nationalistic: so the first German military force motivated by some form of nationalism, aka the Landsknechts and their valued commanders like von Frundsberg, were seen worthy to be heroized, as were 'men of the people' like Florian Geyer.

I love in the part in the end that he are more worried about the suffering of his wife than his own death.

@@patriciusvunkempen102 There was no common German culture. Germany didn't exist until the unification in the 19th century. The Netherlands was just as "German" then as any part of the HRE part of Germany today. Charles V spoke fluent Dutch and lived in the Netherlands. The Netherlands were the most centralized parts of Charles V's empire, which he ruled directly. Not having to deal with any local "German" Count, Bishop or other nobleman.

Gracias a todos los lansquenetes, valones, piqueros suizos, italianos y otros europeos que lucharon por la gloria de la Monarquía Hispánica y del catolicismo.
