I doubt that it is regulation or the de-regulation that makes us safe or not. IMHO, we need to detect and get rid of predatory characters from the finance industry as early as possible. Existing laws to do with fraud, greed, etc. should be sufficient, however, politicians often are willing too overlook predators until there is real damage done.

I don't think Canadian should be worried about how our banking institutions work.
Mind you there is lots room for improvement 100000 per personal account is not.
It should be for every dollar that is placed in there the bank should be able to cover it.
With the gross amount of fees they charge and interest they should easily be able to wave any potential of suffering in any way of a major loss.

People have extremely short memories when it comes to the Canadian banking system. READ some of the comments, realize most of the comments are emotionally based, not using critical thinking skills.
Canada's banks have moved into the US system RBC, TD, etc to use the investment corporations to get access to products not allowed in Canada.
I stopped using a major Canadian bank ,not because of the US market access but fro knowing it has massive amounts of money invested in fossil fuel industries.
The 2007-8 "banking crisis" didn't touch the Canadian system much at all. Remember that.
Yes, Credit Unions are good for lower costs, and I chose one that backs environmental investment.

These two banks invested (lent money to) companies that would have trouble getting conventional financing. These are environmental social governance (ESG) companies. These companies are pie in the sky type companies that have grandiose ideas that never come to fruition. I wonder how many Canadians know that the far left in Canada is pushing hard for Canadian pension plans to invest in ESG companies, just like these two failed banks. Both Republican and Democrats recently voted to ensure ESG investing would not be allowed in American Pension Plans. The fact that Democrats even voted for this should alarm Canadians to how bad the concept is. Yet the other day the CBC ran a puff piece trying to gaslight Canadians into accepting this. The far left wants to access trillions of your hard earned pension money to invest in ESG companies. The same type that played a major role in the failure of these two banks. If your a teacher in Ontario I would get rid of your current union reps as they are intent on ensuring your pension fund collapses. Can you imagine after 40 yrs of work, your pension disappears. ESG sounds so nice but it’s really just a far left ponsy scheme on steroids. It works like this. I have a great idea, your pension gives me millions of dollars, I proceed to live like a rock star, private jets, 5 star hotels, world travel to “environmental conferences” while paying myself big bonuses and dividends. 2 years later or even 15 years later there is no product, no revenue, company goes bankrupt. But I can retire. . If the far left is able to access the trillions in dollars in your pension fund, can you imagine the party.

There are certain aspects of globalism that have failed, and we have to recognize that fact. That is in large part because Russia, China, and their allies on the "economic battlefield" are hostile competition. They do not want to play by the rules of Capitalism, but they want to use Capitalism the way bank robbers use banks. What that means is that there are no simple or painless ways to apply tourniquets to the gaping financial wounds that have resulted from that failed globalism. The institutions that have become over invested, overly involved, in expanding their financial footprints into that failed globalist environment, in effect throwing money at the bank robbers, will have to fail. SVB, and Credit Suisse were expanding those footprints, and cozying up with hostile competition that refuses to play the Capitalist game by proper Capitalist rules. There are others that are similarly involved, in various ways, where they ought not to be involved. Why ought not ? That is because there is a need to not only stop the bleeding into a failed program of ill considered and flawed globalism, but an even larger need to restore the power of capitalization to properly Capitalist enterprises, within the nations and entities that do play by proper Capitalist rules, and that are willing to denounce and oppose the corruption that comes with hostile competition. Corruption meant to destroy Capitalism, rather than to build it up. We need massive capitalization for industrial growth, in key strategic industries, and the collapse of bad banks is going to restore that healthy capitalization, as investors become spurred to put their dollars into Capitalism friendly, not hostile, nations and entities. No more aiding and abetting the enemy, becomes the real outcome. No more influx of money to the bank robbers, and we have to remember that Communism was a start up that was carried out by bank robbers in the formation of the USSR. The bank robber tradition continues and it is time it was put to a stop.
