Memories!!! I’ve been to Playland more times than I can count! My grammar school had annual trips to Playland every May! It was my training wheels park for thrill rides, so as soon as I was tall enough, the next Six Flags trip was filled with Lightning Loops and such 😜

The Dragon Coaster was also used in an episode of 21 Jump Street, where Johnny Depp's character was strapped to the track. There have also been numerous uncredited scenes for small indy movies.

It is also an historical landmark. As a former Rye resident since my father passed away four years ago all I can think to myself is now there's no more going home. When you live there other than ice skating you really don't go.
Mariah Carey also did a music video there and the movie Big was also filmed there.
Fireworks were also on Wednesday nights but because the Water's Edge condominiums which were formerly Osborn swimming pool complained and that's when it stopped.
Having commuted from Rye to Grand Central Terminal over a 30 year period the last train is at 12:40 a.m.
    My height is 6'6½".

I love my home park. I have always lived 20 mins away from Playland and I enjoy it every single time. So many memories here for me, and even though it’s not the park that turned me into an enthusiast it’s still very nostalgic for me. I really hope we get something soon though, our last coaster was Super Flight nearly 18 years ago. I’m being serious when I say that this may be the first or second Playland review I have ever seen on TH-cam, so thanks for making this video!

The Derby Racer being one of only three in the world. One is at Cedar Point and the other is in Germany where they were originally manufactured. Sadly the Derby at Playland is locked, as the horses used to also slide forward and back on a track while it went around, that way you could see who in your row would "win" when it stopped. Shout out to Gary who was the manager of that ride when I worked there. Loved walking the table.

Dragon Coaster was my first credit, and I grew up 15 mins from there so I’ll always have some love for it. As far as expanding good luck. Rye is very very snobby and will do everything in their power to protest any expansions. But I could be wrong. As an coaster Enthusiast I wish people would include Dragon Coaster more like the cyclone, Meaning age wise. It’s a good credit to have.

I was planning a trip to Rye Playland for a while now and, well today I went with my family! I will say right off the bat that my trip was a mixed bag, but I will go over the details as I go. I ended up getting a year end deal where admission to the park and rides for $20 per person which was a good deal given that a ticket price normally is $40. Cost for parking was $20, which I thought was excessive. I can see $10 to $15 MAX, but no more. One downer was that we hit some traffic on the way up from Long Island and that lengthened the trip, from what was to be an hour and 10 minutes to an hour and 30 minutes. Not terrible, but we got to the park later than we wanted to. On an uptick, when we arrived and entered the park, I was amazed at all the new work they have done. Compared to what some people had said that Playland looked old and dated (prior to 2022), I have to say that about a good 90% of the park buildings have a fresh coat of paint. There were several buildings that were currently under construction or renovation. There are many plants and gardens in the park that are meticulously cared for. The park seems to be very well kept too as it was very clean. So appearance wise, the park gets a big uptick for that. First ride we hit was the Grand Carousel, which had no line. As with the main park midway, the carousel was also in well kept order. However, the band organ wasn't working. So that was a downer. From the carousel we shot over to the Dragon coaster. THIS was a much anticipated coaster credit for me as it was going to be my first, and probably only Fred Church coaster. There was a bit of a line for the coaster, but the wait was no more than 15 minutes. They were only running one train. So my family and I get to the coaster train and board it. It was here that I encountered the BIGGEST downtick for the day. The lapbar wouldn't close! I was just too tall and big. So my family went without me. Naturally I was PISSED! I was in a huff for nearly an hour, but realized that I brought my family there to have a good time, and me being in a bad mood wasn't going to help matters. Granted, my bad mood was compounded when the same thing happened when I went with my family on the wild mouse coaster. Now, I know a Wild Mouse isn't a big deal, and I was on them when I was younger. But I really feel for the star attraction of the park, that the Dragon coaster should be better accommodating for larger people.
So with two big downticks because I couldn't get on the roller coasters, I had to give the park a few upticks for their dark rides. They no longer have the Flying Witch, but both the Zombie Castle and the Ye Old Mill were great. I really liked the latter because they had some really nice troll animatronics. The Zombie Castle, however, did have some props that weren't working. In addition to the dark rides I did take a few turns on the Derby Racer, which was the other 'big dream' ride that I always wanted to try and there are only three in the world that are still running! So I got the rare ride credit for that. Speaking of rare rides, this park has a VERY intense Whip ride and WOW! It was the best one I have ridden. It REALLY throws you in the turns. The force is incredible. One of my boys said that the Whip at Dorney park was faster and bigger, but he agrees that the one at Rye Playland is more intense.
We did go on some more flat rides the park had, but it was standard fare, like the Tornado and another ride with motorcycles that swing out. It was OK. They have this new Polyp ride called Jack the Puppeteer and it looks awesome, but it wasn't running yet. I think it is something that is new for the 2025 season. There was also a sign on the flying coaster that has been down for two years. The sign said that they are going to reopen it in 2025!
Bumper Cars: The only ride that had a long line was the bumper cars and we kept coming back to it. Then later we realized that they were running only 8 of the sixteen cars! No wonder why the line was so long! I don't know why they had set aside so many cars as not running. But that was a big down tick. We ended up not going on them as we didn't want to wait the the 45 minutes or so because they were running so few cars. Although, I will say that the bumper car arena was nice and big, unlike Long Island's Adventureland, in which the bumper car building was not even 1/3rd the size.
Okay. Food. I was surprised that there was only one restaurant that was kind of by the park and that was the Tiki Bar. However, prices were pretty expensive for that, so I stayed with my family in the park. There really wasn't any enclosed areas to eat, unless you took your food to where the pavilions are. Even then, there is no place with AC on a hot day. Thankfully, today wasn't too hot. We ended up getting the pizza. At first I thought I could buy it by the slice and was taking orders from the family and everyone wanted two slices each. So I said, "Okay, I will buy a whole pie." When I looked on the menu, I saw that a pepperoni pie was $12.99. I looked wide eyed and said to one of my sons, "that's good!" But, when I looked around, I had noticed that no one was getting slices and they were getting small round 6 slice pizzas that were about 14 inches in diameter. That was the ONLY way they sold the pizza. Realizing that one pizza wasn't going to be enough for a family of four, I had to get two! Now, at $26, the pizza didn't seem like such a good deal anymore. The drinks were very expensive as well. They only sold one size too. So I bought two, so my two sons shared one and my wife and I shared the other. I ended up spending $35 for everything. The pizza was just OK. It smelled really good, but the taste was just OK. I would say just marginally better than the pizza at Long Island's Adventureland. So due to the fact that the pizza was just meh and the high price, the food gets a downtick from me.
The gift shop was one of our last stops for the night and when we entered, there was music blaring so loud, I had to tell the girl to turn it down. They didn't really have a lot there. There were some wooden dragon figures, t-shirts, a ton of these balls which I really didn't look at, and some magnets. I ended up buying a magnet that has the park name and the Derby Racer on it. The price was OK at $10. It is a big bigger than the average refrigerator magnet, so that was a plus. But overall, I wasn't too fond of the gift shop.
All in all, my family did have a good time at the park and as I said, the park was beautiful. The value was decent for the $20 per person price I got. But it wouldn't have been such a good value at the normal $40 per person price. We stayed until dark and was in awe at how the place is lit at night. However, if I am asked if I would go again, I would say, "No." The biggest reason for that is the fact that I couldn't ride a single coaster in the park! Yes, I am overweight, but not morbidly obese. They should have at least one coaster that can accommodate larger people. Really, they just need to raise the lap bars on the Dragon coaster, and that would be good. But given that is the park's star attraction and I cannot ride it is reason enough for not wanting to return. But the fact that the food (granted, my family and I only had the pizza) is expensive and mediocre just puts a damper on things. Also, you pretty much have to eat outside, unless you go to the Tiki Bar and pay even more. And from what I seen from other videos, not even that is fully enclosed.
I think the next planned trip to a park in NY, would be Luna Park at Coney Island. I know that is far more expensive than Rye Playland, but I KNOW the food (depending where you go) is good, and I KNOW I fit in the Coney Island Cyclone.

      @jukingeo 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@CanobieCoaster Yeah, it really sucks. Wish they would have stuck with the original P&C trains. I heard they were heavier and faster, thus the ride had some airtime. But my sons confirmed that there really isn't any airtime on the coaster. My other son that likes wooden coasters, says the Dorney Park Thunderhawk, "Beats it hands down." I showed him a video of Boulderdash at Lake Compounce and he wants to ride that one. He loves the mountain setting. I told him that the best coaster at night ride I had was on Boulderdash. BTW, another thing that sucks about the Dragon Coaster is that they are only running one train! I guess with the business slowing down towards the end of the season they only run one train. The park wasn't really full yesterday. The wait was about 20 minutes and then to only find out I can't ride it. Real bummer.

The one at the center was the "safe" one where the cars wouldn't get up enough power to really bump well. The one in the back you could really do some damage on.

Unfortunately a kid panicked, got out, and drowned.

Sounds hardly like a reason to ban single riders then. No reason why they couldn't have stopped at requiring children to be accompanied by an adult. The incident is an example of what could happen to a child if they are put on a ride that they don't want to ride however.

@@ElectriKong- They’ve since installed closed-circuit cameras throughout the ride and monitor it constantly. Yes, the new rule could simply be no unaccompanied children allowed. But at the time of the incident a number of park safety violations were found, and the park was taking a serious PR hit in the media at a time when the park’s future financial viability was in serious jeopardy. I think they were worried about reassuring the public and making sure nothing ever happened again.
Playland has come close to closing down at several points over the years. I’m glad it’s still around.

I met my wife while we were working at Playland. She worked the Skyflyer ride. If you were skilled enough with the manual controls, you could hang both cars completely upside down & watch the pocket contents empty!
