- (8-9-2018) what a better way to have celebrated my birthday than to get a look at a rare vintage elevator. I wish they had had time to find the key to the machine room :( PLEASE NOTE! Never attempt to ride a car top unless 1. You have permission and 2. You are an adult that knows about the dangers of doing so.. Beautiful old elevator. Has Kone inspection controls which is interesting. Despite how old it is, it still works like a charm which shows that it is very long lasting it is

Also as a reminder do NOT copy what you see here. I am not encouraging lift surfing I am simply trying to show you as much detail as possible about a historic elevator. While I am not an expert I have enough common sense to do so safely and I was granted permission to conduct this as well. If you copy you can be hurt or killed or get in trouble. Also I don’t want to hear how dangerous it is. I am well aware. Iwill take every opportunity I get to bring you detailed looks at elevators. I do this so you don’t have to.

Now this is definitely a throwback in time. Especially for elevator technology.
I am with you about safety on these things. Dieselducy you are right about injury on these if you trespass. An elevator tech showed me a machine room after he saw one of my grand works on cleaning an elevator and he took me up to the machine room so he could take me behind the scenes of how an elevator really works. I got an up close and personal look at the cables and the drive wheels. What you see are what are called shivs. In a high rise office building or hospital that may be 20 to 50 or more stories tall, if you fall or lean against a pulley with the cables wrapped over the drive wheel while the elevator car is sitting on the top level, if it makes an express run to the basement and you are leaning on the main drive wheels, those cables will cut you like a meat slicer.

So can you open the doors on the floor when the elevator isn't there and just fall down the shaft??? Looks to be in great condition, but to the average person it looks really sketch/old/worn out with those wooden doors and that hold it down button system.
No it has a "running cam" that unlocks the door only when the car is level with the landing.
As he showed at the end, there is a door locking mechanism. By pushing it, it will unlock the door.
