He picks up his dribble on his left foot in a "gathering" step, then takes the first allowable step back on his right foot, takes the second allowable step on his left foot which he plants as a "pivot foot" (right foot then hitting the floor is not considered a step, he just plants it as the non-pivot foot), then he launches into the shot and releases the ball before his left pivot foot hits the floor again. All of this is explained online in the league travel rule section.
