I don't care about the Sonic characters, but the dialog is just... It feels so forced. And the fact that these female characters are used as nothing but a plot device makes it even worse.

I love you, honey" isn't what you'd typically say after being rescued from a deadly situation, or at least not in that tone: like it is, it's just a truckload of shipping fuel. It emphasizes the "romantic" element too much and makes it feel like the victim didn't care about her life at all, to the point where the scene loses all emotional value it could possibly have. Additionally, the music, the setup of the level and the Toad's dialogue make the encounter feel less like a part of the story and more like a reward for the player.
