I've had this light (18") for 4 years now - using it in my small home studio. I'm always trying to find ways of minimizing gear and reducing footprints as much as I can. While the light from those Aputures with the huge softboxes look amazing, they're less than ideal for small spaces. I am thrilled with this flat panel light from Fotodiox. I typically shoot wide open, maybe a stop or two down....and with my ISO at 320, I don't have to use the full power of these. Not even close. Battery life is also great if you're not using it at full power. I use a Matthews White Silk scrim for extra diffusion, even though it's not "needed"; but the results are just beautiful. Highly recommended. (I use an Expodisc to do a custom white balance and the skin tones look fantastic.)
Hey Paul! I’m happy to hear that your light is still treating you well after a few years of use. I think you definitely get a lot of light for the money that you pay! I’m pretty much running my setup the same as yours and I’m LOVING IT! I actually just posted another video with this light using it as my only light source and I got some pretty cool results. Thanks for contributing down here in the comments! 👍🏻
Awesome review video! It totally reminded me of why this light is legit the jam. People, if you are looking for a good strong versatile portable quality light, look no further! Great review sir! 🤘🏻
I like my big softbox at home. But when I have to do interview style stuff on location, I hate lugging it around. But I am thinking a couple of these would be pretty handy.
Cool idea! Yeah, there’s definitely nothing wrong with big soft boxes unless you’re in a small space lol The flapjack is definitely a game changer when it comes to portability!
When you show how the light looks, how bright did you have it, and what camera settings? I have a GH5, so the sensor isn't as big as the Sony you have, just trying to figure out if it would be bright enough. Thanks for the solid review!
For the 2nd half of the video I had the light somewhere around 15 - 20 percent brightness. That is typically where I keep it for all of my videos unless I need mor output. I don’t exactly remember my ISO setting, but I was shooting this at 24fps, 1/50 shutter, and f2.8. Hopefully that helps out.
Ferhan Khan Photography I totally get where you’re coming from. They are two totally different lights. It just seemed to me at the time that the 120d was the “go to” TH-cam light, when in reality it’s probably way more than what the casual creator would need. That or if people don’t have a lot of space to work with then the 120d with a huge soft box may be a bit cumbersome. I love the flapjack because it’s sort of the opposite of the 120d for those reasons. Not saying the aperture is bad, because it’s not, just that the flapjack fits my needs perfectly :)
What do you think of the flapjack? 🥞💡It’s my new favorite video light!

I have you to thank for turning me on to this dope light sir! I'm excited to put this thing to work! Thanks for the feedback.
Oww Ben was here :)
I'm sold. I have spent 5 days watching and reading about lighting.
Hey thanks! I’m glad that I can help you with your buying decision 👍🏻

Just a helpful tip you may want to use a de-esser on your vocal audio. The Ssss and Shhh sounds are a bit piercing.
RiskyDub hey thanks for the feedback. I’ll keep that in mind for future videos!
Done, this is the light I am getting, thanks for the great review my friend
Good choice!
That light looks good enough to eat lolololo. Dope review man!
lol Thanks man! I'm loving this light!!!

Hey I was wondering if you could tell me which tripod are you using for the flapjack, I bought 2
Cool light but The CRI is only 91, I’m looking at the Godox VL150 for 100 more
Jack Spade I totally get that! It looks like Godox is putting out some pretty great lights here lately 👍🏻
Is one light enough or do you need two (key & fill)?
You can definitely get away with using one main key light. If you decide that you wanted a little bit of fill you can get a white board and use that.
Just curious what light stand you’re using for it?
I can't recall what brand it is, but it's heavy duty like this one amzn.to/3pvVw4k
That light is pretty heavy so you'll want something sturdy.
can you tell me the power in % that you use in this video with the iso av and shutter speed ? thanks
I just bought one! It's gonna take a while to get to New Zealand but we'll get there! What's the run time on two npf970 batteries?
Cheers
Justin
I don't know the exact time, but in my experience you can get quite a few hours out of the 2 batteries depending on how bright you run the light.
is there a way to remotely control this light without all expensive DMX stuff?
This light doesn’t have any DMX options that I’m aware of. Also, I don’t think that there is any kind of remote option either.
Where did you but it for $300?
Follow the B&H link above. It’s still on sale for $309
It's not really a light I would compare with the 120d, they are very different.
