LED Downlight Cover: Fire rating, dealing with LED Insulation consistency

  • Fire rated LED downlight covers are basically an all in one product, for insulating downlights (Energy Efficiency) fire rating and sound proofing Led recessed lighting. Installable from below the ceiling, Once you install the downlighter cover, you still need to fix the insulation in the roof after its installation.
    Think of the Downlight Mitt covers an insulation batt for downlights. 5% gaps in insulation can reduce the R-value performance of your insulation by 30%.
    LED electronic components are more susceptible to premature failure when they are completely submerged in insulation. IC rated fittings can still prematurely fail when submerged in insulation. The Downlight mitt products, give the LED's some air to breathe with. This video also shows you how to install the downlight mitt downlight cover.

    That's amazing!

    I didn't know this. Do they blow off when you do a passive house door check with pressurisation?

      Andrew C Never... that’s our story and we are sticking with it. 😉

      Having said that, recessed lighting wouldn’t be a good idea in a passive house home.

      Efficiency Matrix Taking the fun out of passive haus are we? What about if you were aiming for a Josh's house standard instead? joshshouse.com.au/

    We’re do you get those cones ?

    At this price I would use ceramic or earthenware plant pots to use on top of the led lights.

      the author would argue their product is convenient to fit from below. And obviously plant pots needs to be fit from above. Crawling in dirty attic is not nice.

    I don't see how this product would be energy efficient as installed. The cone would have to be air sealed to the wallboard and the wires would have to be sealed where they enter the cone. Why isn't there any insulation in the ceiling cavity?

    • @ecoevo
      @ecoevo  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There is insulation in the ceiling cavity. The cover can be caulked to the plasterboard, from above. You are right you may need to caulk all these penetrations, and around the lip of the cover. If you want a totally air tight ceiling, steer clear of recessed lighting all together.

      I agree. As much as I like recessed lighting, I would rather have a tight building envelope.

      OK. Here's a question. I can't afford passive house rated windows. I plan on building 11-inch walls and using window bucks. I would like to install the windows against stops (1" strips) inside the window bucks. I was wondering if I would gain anything by putting a dual pane window against stops near the outside of the buck and putting another dual pane window near the middle of the buck. Would doubling the insulated windows double their insulative value?

    If they’re IC rated, you don’t need these.

    • @ecoevo

      Agreed, however, lamplife longevity can be an issue. The downlight cover can provide abit of a breathing space to keep your LED’s cooler for longer. 😉

      @@ecoevo LEDs don’t get hot or heat up that’s the hole point of them

      Incorrect. Under insulation they do. And electronics do not like heat, when it comes to longevity.

    • @Dog-whisperer7494
      @Dog-whisperer7494 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ecoevo well you’re not meant to put any wiring or light fittings under insulation anyway but we do as for down lights your supposed to remove a section of loft insulation but as I said LED lights don’t get hot or heat up

    • @ecoevo
      @ecoevo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually newer downlights are IC rated down here in OZ, which means they can be submerged in insulation for the benefit of insulation consistency. Now... LED’s do not get nearly as hot as halogen or incandescent globes, however they are electronic, and electronics can prematurely fail when operating in elevated temperatures. And That’s a fact. 👍🏻
