I'm learning some basic set-up skills and amp repair / maintenance, but have not fooled around with pickups yet. I've also read that you can reverse the pickup leads, for a similar effect. Lastly, I'd like to see an A/B of the before / after mod, it's like a speaker comparison; you have to hear the differences without too much of a time lag.

Listen Sheriff, you should try the electrical phase swap (with a dpdt pot). There is such a small difference between magnetic and electric phase AND you get to keep your original sound..
My question is concerning your Bigsby. Did you attach your Bigsby using a Vibramate adapter as to not drill any holes. If so, did you use a V7 adapter to match the B7 Bigsby? If so, did everything line up? I bought a B7 Bigsby and a V7 vibramate and it attached to the guitar just fine except for the rear strap button which was nearly an inch away from the hole. Also the Bigsby seemed to be almost levetating off the guitar instead of sitting cloesly on the body. I can't figure out what I am doing wrong. Any trick to make it fit? Thanks
Yep, I bought the B7 bigsby used with the vibramate already attached. It also included the Callahan string-through bar. I don't have any pictures of the end. The butt section is farther away from the guitar for sure though
I did that to the Les Paul in my picture. I'm a mad Gary Moore and Brian May fan so the out of phase sound has always appealed to me. I sold my Les Paul a few years ago but my main guitars today have the same option but switchable.
Gary Moore was the second owner of the les paul "greeny." Show some respect to Peter Green, who was the original owner of Greeny with the out of phase pickup.
What you did here wasn't a Peter Green mod. For the Green affect you want to rotate the magnet 180 degrees, not flip it over like you did here. Before you say I'm wrong, just Google it. Tons of very clear material from reputable sources. I'm also speaking from experience. Have done this mod dozens of times over decades and initially flippedtue magnet like you. Rotating is a totally different effect. It actually sounds like Green.
Trying to get the Peter Green sound ...... One thing these guys do not realise is the fact the sound they are hearing from a recording is not the original sound . The signal has past through multiple electronic devices , that all influence the sound , influence what comes out at the end . Wanting to reproduce the sound not only the guitar has to be tinkered with , what was done to Green's guitar is by no means clear imo , also the whole chain of apparatus the sound went through and it's settings , including putting it on tape or vinyl , that has all to be re-created . A rabbit hole of variables to get lost in . One factor can never be recreated : what the fingers do , left and right hand .
Well, in my case, I'm not a Peter Green fan at all. I've never listed to his music, I don't have any real reference for "The Peter Green sound ", but I've read tons about his guitar and the process to do this mod and it sounded interesting. So, no, we aren't all chasing some sound we heard trying to copy some guy and his tone.
There's an easier way of doing this. I had caused the out of phase in the middle unintentionally when i installed new pickups. The only thing i had to do to get it back into phase was to change two wires of the bridge pickup. I had to simply put the hot to phase and the phase to hot. But i guess that works only with four wire pickups. I didn't liked the out of phase tone. It was very thin and significantly lower in volume than both, the 1 and 3 position.
Hey!! If you lowered the volume on one pickup just a little bit (both active), you get the volume back but with some extra out of phase flavor. I hope you have a great one.
I’ve done this a few times. You just have to be patient working. Thing is when my selector switch is in the middle position I believe I had to slightly adjust the volume or tone on the rhythm knobs to achieve an identifiable “quacking” sound.
Appreciate the video, but it would’ve been cooler if you use some clean tones and unaffected tone so we could actually hear it through the recording. I could barely even tell anything but thanks anyway.
Yeah, I get that. I believe when I did this, the whole comparison thing was more of an afterthought. I only had the afternoon to get the mod done, so I didn't take the time I should have to do some proper comparisons. Somewhere I had read that the out of phase sound was most noticeable when the signal was distorted or overdriving, so I probably stuck with that
I'm sorry to say that is incorrect. Imagine having 2 magnets trying to stick together. You can't have them repel away from each other just by turning one In a clockwise direction, you must flip it over for them to have opposite poles and repel from each other.
@@SteveWoodyMusic I disagree. I did it just as bobbyrobertson4214 describes and got a perfect replication of the Peter Green sound. Additionally, your statement about getting magnets to repel is absolutely incorrect. Don't imagine it; try it!
@SteveWoodyMusic you spin it 180 not flip. That's all preference. There are videos showing guys do it 180 spin. The edges of the magnet are north south on the corner. Done this myself and it gives that peter tone glassy airy sound we hear. It was on Rollin stone mag when greeny was opened up the magnet was turned not flipped.

The middle positions on a Strat are not out of phase. The phase cancellation on a Strat happens because of the proximity of the pickups (how close they are together). Strat PUs actually OOP are super thin sounding.
Middle pick ups reverse wound reverse polarity apart from the very early models.. So the noise is out of phase/cancelled, but not the sound, that’s where people get mixed up.
@@SteveWoodyMusic You can test that with a simple compass. Just run the compass over the pickup before and after the switch and you should see that the poles have been reversed. That said I've always hear the you needed to rotate the magnet. I took the lazy way out and had Seymour Duncan build me one about 20 years ago.

And as a parent to 2 young kids I know the feeling of hearing something unexpected from another room 😂 I’m a big fan of Peter Green and often think about doing the mod on a guitar but wonder if I’d prefer the convenience of having the phase reversed by a push/pull pot. From what I’ve read though doing it via a wiring mod isn’t actually the same thing so who knows 🤷♂️ Seems like it was reasonably painless to do yourself and it’s much truer to the actual Greeny guitar. Great playing dude 🎸
Thanks so much. I honestly know nothing about Peter Green and his sound, but have heard about this mod and really like some of the sounds Greg Koch got from his LP with the mod. Just something to try out :). And yeah, it was mostly painless, but it took probably 45 minutes to get that stinking cover off the pickup. I need a solder sucker BAD!!!!

You should really listen to Peter Green, particularly the first Fleetwood Mac albums. You will be amazed.

You do not turn the magnet over you switch it around so treble side is on bass side switching the poles

i just flipped it over and put the bottom on the top. I didn't spin it around.

The majority spin it 180° as found out in peter greens"greeny" other guys flip completely. It's a preference. I did the 180 spin, and it works fine.

actually the stock case works just fine. you just have to turn the handle back toward the tailpiece and close it up :)

Actually, my pickups are potted and I didn't have a mess. Maybe they aren't as heavily potted as others though.
