Installed these on a riding mower th-cam.com/users/postUgkxetgfkJxfdT_B2vGYP-uNTLaBbim9OKTD . They were sharp out of the box, although I've never liked blade edges that were coated...not quite as sharp as I personally want. Using my belt sander, I removed the coating from the cutting edges and refined the edge enough to shave with them. So far, after three runs, these blades are holding up as expected. Even after hitting a few fallen 1/2 inch or so branches, the edges are still sharp as heck. No edge dings, no warping, etc. As far as installing them, the cutouts were of the proper size and shape to fit my aging Craftsman mower. Very satisfied.
Great job! Thanks for the info. Always wanted an All American Sharpener but just couldn't justify $200.00. Got it done with stuff I had laying around and a few bolts that cost me less than $10.00. It's Awesome!
I used to use an angle grinder. It has issues, like hot spots, trying to make a flat surface with a curved wheel etc. I since found a much better power tool to do the job. It's faster, and it sharpens much better. I use a belt sander. Depending on how dull the blade is I use a different grade of sand paper. Works really, really good.
I use a drill press vise to hold my blades. I got it at Tractor Supply for like $20. You could just mount that to a 4x4 at a 32°angle and it might be a bit more efficient. I've thought of making one like that but, I use a wavy style mulching blade and it would be difficult I think for me. I have always free handed it with a 4" grinder. Good video Gerald!
Thank you for showing all of us your ideas on how to sharpen lawnmower blades better. My money situation has been tight with the prices of everything going up and your idea help me to get a better cutting edge on my lawnmower blades. God bless you and your family; a new viewer, William.
This looks like a project that is worth building. Right now I am using a belt sander upside down but not at a fixed angle. Like you I'm a woodworker and have all kind of lumber and equipment. So I probably have the material laying around here. Thanks for the info...
Thank you for taking the time to video this, and for being in the sights of some rock throwers. The only thing I haven't found on ALL types of blade sharpeners is mention of a slower speed angle grinder, but I do realize there are multiple ways to cool the steel if it gets too hot. Since there is nothing new under the sun, the AAS device is no doubt also a copy of someone else's design, just more refined. Thanks again and no more hand filing for me.
Loved your video and made a jig as you did. I did add a 3/8-16 wood insert with a 3/8-16 3/4 inch bolt and washer to make securing the blade easy and repeatable. Naysayers that say you can do it by hand are not aware how important the blade angle is, and how easy it is, over time, to get that angle way outta wack.
I had been planning on making a jig similar to the "original" and this helped light the fire under me to get it done. I'm super cheap on tinkering projects so I cut the arms out of 2 old mower blades, a piece of pallet wood, and a few bolts (had to buy the M8-1.25). It needs a little tinkering to get it just how I really want it, but it works good and a whole lot cheaper. Thank you for sharing!
great video! I've been free handing with the blade in a machinists vise, now I know what I'm going to do with that 1" square steel tubing I've got laying around. been wanting a better sharpening setup didn't want to spend hundreds on an official mower blade grinder.
Works great for me. I use the smallest nail I can, and then mark a level line on my wall. The main thing is you need to locate the centerline of the hole in the blade to place it accurately on the mail. I like his lil getup he designed on the video and plan on making me one.
Nice work! I have the All American Sharpener 5005, and I love it, but I realize it isn't for everyone. I sharpen blades for others, and it has more than paid for itself. Mine has adjustable angle settings and I run into a lot more than the 35 degree angle while sharpening for others. On your setup, I would lose the wood screw holding the blade down and set a threaded metal plug in that spot so you can use a threaded bolt and never worry about it wearing out with repeated use.
Thanks Eric! I did make some upgrades to the way the blade goes on the sharpener. As I said in the video that all American sharpener is a great tool I'm sure. Personally I went in mind paying the money for it. However I just wanted to try something and it worked out pretty good for me. Thanks again
@@cleangreenlawnservicellc2630 It is a good tool but so is yours! I just spent about 8 hrs last weekend making a powered chute block for my Hustler Fastrak. I fabbed and welded up the brackets and the chute door from 3/16" steel and it came out awesome, so I get it. Often there is a pre-made solution, but sometimes you just want to build it.
This is pretty darn cool! I might try to build one. I usually rough in my blade in on the belt sander and then fine tune it with a file using a draw file stroke. It doesn't take long and I have gotten good results with it.

You mentioned that you have a wood shop? IF you have a wood or metal lathe sitting around, one with a rack & pinion moveable saddle, just think how easily you could PERFECTLY grind a blade, if your grinder was attached/ clamped to the cross-feed? Perfectly straight, exactly the same amount of material removed on both sides of the blade. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, someday, I'll have to show YOU how I did it!? ;>) Take Care.
It's really not that hard to hold your angle grinder at the right angle. Clamp the blade in a vise or c-clamp it to the edge of a table, then hit it carefully with your flap disk. It doesn't need to be perfect. It's a lawn mower, not the space shuttle. Balancing is a good idea and far more important than getting the perfect angle on the bevel.
I like the idea of your setup, but ? For you, how do you use this setup for mulching blades that have a step on them? Have yet to find anyone with video on how to sharpen that type of blade.
Alan, not sure I have an answer. I don't run anything other than straight blades. Typically I run high lift and to much I use Gator blades but the sharpening process is no different on them. I do see your dilemma. I am told the All American Sharpener can do Curved mulching blades as well.
I'm sure it is because I used washers at pivot points and not bearings. Honestly my original intent was to throw this together and then make it better......still using it like this a year later. Definitely not as solid as an AAS. Thanks for stopping by
Come on man! Just say DIY All American blade sharpener and get on with it. A five minute disclaimer to sell how it isn't a knock off of all American then show how it's basically the same thing. Awesome. I was wanting to make my own knock off.
I hope yours works out well. My point in the disclaimer was to say, hey if you have the money and want to spend it, buy one. If not, here's an option 😁. I think AAS as well as a couple of other companies have done a good job with the sharpener. I may have even sold a few for them 💪

Lol well expense is relative I suppose. A guy making 150k doesn't want to build a sharpener and the price might not matter. Thanks for stopping by 💪 & subscribing. I appreciate it!
Tell me how you really feel 😂. Seriously, I did sharpen them by hand for a long time. Just wanted to take a shot at making one of these. To your point, it's probably a little slower than just holding the blade, but keeping the correct angle on the blade does seem to help with the cut quality. Thanks for stopping by.
Sharpening a straight blade is easy and can be done with much simpler jig. No body shows the jig for curvy NON straight blade common on mulching blade. i might have to think and build one myself. To me simplest is the best. This jig is unnecessary complicated and it only does straight blade. I pass.
Good job! Over $200 for the All American is Highway robbery. Especially in these times. So you are really being very helpful. Thanks for helping your fellow man save some bucks.
Instead of holding the blade down with a wood screw, you can use a bolt that has wood threads on one side and threaded for a nut on the other side. That way the bolt stays in your jig and you can tighten each blade with a nut and washer.
@@cleangreenlawnservicellc2630 Thank you for replying and making this video! I had to edit my original post as it barely resembled English; sorry about that.
A vice, and your grinder you will get same result.Stop over doing something simple. It is all about to get some support toward your bench while grinding. And all these degrees you will find with your eye-chronometer. No offence, 99 percent of your grinding video is just blabbering. You gain more subscribers if you remove all that chitchat 😁👍

That is a great video, Reverend. Thank you for the in-depth description on how to build the tool. I like the way it works. I sharpen my own blades with an angle grinder, and have for years, but have always had trouble keeping the original blade angle. But there is nothing that works better, than a good, sharp, balanced blade!! With a little time, effort, and creativity that our Living God created us with, one can save a considerable amount of hard earned funds. Gods blessings on you and your family. Keep up the good work!
Watched your video and went out in the shop and had one made in less than two hours. Total investment $42 and that’s only because I had to go to Harbor freight and pick up a grinder and a disk and some bolts. I’m not in a lawn care business but I do have a 3 1/2 acre yard. The jig works very well it gives me very consistent grinds, better than I can do free handed!
Awesome Roger. Glad to hear it worked out well for you. The grinder and the pads obviously add some expense. I've added a clamp to it in an updated video. I've probably sharpened 100+ blades and it seems to be holding up well. Thanks for stopping by.
Sorry but use a 4 1/2" grinding wheel. Those flap discs only work fast at first and cost five times what a 4 1/2" grinding wheel costs. I run a street rod shop so working metal is not new to me.
As to the balancer, drive a large nail into a post or wall of your shop, grind off the head, use a square to check that nail is square to post, set blade on nail, remove more material off side of blade that hangs lowest, works better than cone balancer and is cheap

Lawn care business
👌😁
Too much blab and not enough showin'...
Thanks Curt 😁
Total copy of American Sharpener
The Redneck Deluxe Version 👌
You talk too much. Good-by
🤣 thanks for listening!
all this stuff is rubbish you sharpen them by hand its easy as and faster
Tell me how you really feel 😂. Seriously, I did sharpen them by hand for a long time. Just wanted to take a shot at making one of these. To your point, it's probably a little slower than just holding the blade, but keeping the correct angle on the blade does seem to help with the cut quality. Thanks for stopping by.
Sharpening a straight blade is easy and can be done with much simpler jig. No body shows the jig for curvy NON straight blade common on mulching blade. i might have to think and build one myself.
To me simplest is the best. This jig is unnecessary complicated and it only does straight blade. I pass.
Well thanks for watching. If you build one, do a video and share it.
Good job! Over $200 for the All American is Highway robbery. Especially in these times. So you are really being very helpful. Thanks for helping your fellow man save some bucks.
You're welcome. Thanks for stopping by and watching.
Instead of holding the blade down with a wood screw, you can use a bolt that has wood threads on one side and threaded for a nut on the other side. That way the bolt stays in your jig and you can tighten each blade with a nut and washer.
I have an updated video where I added a clamp, but your idea was my first thought. Thanks for stopping by.
@@cleangreenlawnservicellc2630 Thank you for replying and making this video! I had to edit my original post as it barely resembled English; sorry about that.
David, I knew exactly what you meant. We can interpret all sorts of variations of English out here in rural south Georgia 😂.
@@cleangreenlawnservicellc2630 Haha. We all speak text “auto correct language”. Looking forward to being a subscriber!
😂👌👊
A vice, and your grinder you will get same result.Stop over doing something simple. It is all about to get some support toward your bench while grinding. And all these degrees you will find with your eye-chronometer. No offence, 99 percent of your grinding video is just blabbering. You gain more subscribers if you remove all that chitchat 😁👍
Thanks Erik 😁
LOL,,, Exactly what I was thinking. NO need to start watching, till 5 min in. & I live in Ohio,,, who cares about Georgia weather!? AND,,, write down all of the 'SPECS' & names of objects before you start your video. THEN, it will look like you know what your talking about! ;>)
I never really thought many people would watch this video, now here we are 127k views later. My small TH-cam audience likes to interact and even keep up with South Georgia weather. I understand your point though. Blessings
Thanks. Lord bless you!
Nice sharpener. 2 things though, 60 is millimeters(2 5/16 approx) and please, hold camera horizontally.
Thanks. I'm a rookie cameraman 😁. Points taken!
Just built this cost me about 50 bucks in material. Works great! Been grinding blades for years. This helped me so much. Thank you
Awesome Chris. I guess the cost of everything has gone up in the last year 🙄. Thanks for stopping by and watching!
Several folks have told me that. I’ll have to try one. Thanks!
Great job! So simple but works so good. Good video. Thank you
You're welcome!
Its WAY over priced (the All American) I opted for a Wong Hung Lo knock off for like $50.
It is expensive. I did buy one to try it out and it is definitely better than my 25.00 job.....much tighter...
As to the balancer, drive a large nail into a post or wall of your shop, grind off the head, use a square to check that nail is square to post, set blade on nail, remove more material off side of blade that hangs lowest, works better than cone balancer and is cheap
Good idea Danny. Thanks for sharing!
You're talking too much off topic. Hold your camera still.
Just making some simple videos 😃. Thanks for stopping by.
Simple and easy to make
Yes sir!
Good Lord man get to the POINT !!!
Come on man, I have to drag it out for advertisement 🤣. I'm a little long winded and this was a long time ago. Hope it helped you.
