It's nice to see that Lexus made the yoke practical, rather than taking the lazy approach and sticking in a yoke without actually making the steering ratio variable (or at least quicker). In my opinion, though, lock-to-lock at low speeds and standstill should be even shorter than it is here; existing Lexus models already have fairly fast quick-ratio steering.

The only way they can sell me on a yoke-wheel is if they add the stick shaker as an anti-distraction mechanism, complete with loud GPWS callouts. I guarantee a lot less people will be on their phone driving if after 5 seconds your car screams "TERRAIN TERRAIN TERRAIN"

Wow, Lexus has a very interesting implementation of the "yoke" and steer by wire. I was going to hate on it, but after watching it in action, it makes sense. With the 150 degree motion range, the yoke wheel works because you don't have to move your hands to do hand-over-hand maneuvers. Whereas in Tesla's version, you're having to use a rectangle for motion best suited to a wheel. That said though, I don't think it'll have a high take rate. As cool as it is, I don't feel that it's safe to not have a mechanical connection between a human and the steering rack. The backup batteries are fine, but I've dealt with my share of electrical gremlins. I can imagine how fun it would be if you had a loose connector, hit a bump, and the steering glitches and flings you into oncoming traffic. A morbid take, but I think that's a genuine concern a lot of buyers would have.

That yoke is weird, but it seems like this implementation is intuitive enough... Looks like if you steer more quickly, it adds more steering more quickly, and if you hold at max angle, it keeps adding steering until it reaches full lock or you unwind a bit.
I still am not a fan because it's overcomplicating a relatively simple system. As an engineer, I see some benefits to safety from not having a metal linkage connecting the wheels to that thing in front of your chest. Other than that though, this seems like something that takes much more time to develop compared to a conventional rack and pinion steering system, and doesn't materially improve the system.

I don’t care what anyone says. I like the yoke. As long as you change the steering ratio to prevent hand-over-hand steering it’s totally valid. Would I want it on a crossover? Probably not. But on a fast car? I think it would be a lot of fun.
As for steer by wire? Any “by wire” system can be valid provided it’s tuned appropriately and gives proper feedback. It will take time to be refined. Just like electric power steering, and hydraulic power steering before that.

Can someone help me understand why the absence of one pedal driving a limitation ? I drove a tesla recently and got a feel of one pedal driving. But as I understand it, the reason it occurs the way it does is because the regenerative braking kicks in as soon as you release the accelerator.
Now Lexus also has regen braking. So if they didn't implement 1-pedal driving, doesnt it mean that they implemented it such that the electric engine spools down slowly as opposed to instantly and the regen braking only kicks in upon applying the brakes ? It feels like the Lexus has implemented a feature and the Tesla was lazy since you can't switch off 1-pedal driving on the Tesla.

I'm impressed with this Lexus. I've gone on a lot of comment sections defending this vehicle that too many are dismissing. I just saw the Kia EV9 presentation and I'm disappointed in it. Not that it is bad, but Kia set a high bar and it's just kind of OK. I know people will go on about the range but that's not my main focus on BEVs. This car's design does it for me. I love the dash and with the "yoke," it works even better. But this isn't about the yoke. This is about variable steer by wire, not yokes. Seems like Lexus burned the midnight oil and it's almost close to ready for prime time. They'll spend some more time refining it but this more efficient way of steering may be the future of steering. Overall, I think the RZ is Lexus most stylish crossover inside and out, beating out the new RX IMO. I'm also big on the radiant heating. I like the lack of gimmicks in this car. The only thing I'd get rid of is the sports propulsion noise. I don't care for fake propulsion noise of any kind.

I always thought that yoke steering would work well with paddle-shifters. I always much preferred a stick shift over paddle shifters for the reason that if you are moving your hands around to different places on the steering wheel then you can misalign your hands with the paddle shifters. This would work well with them though and would be cool to see in some high end sports cars as an option

A great example is in racing, especially in f1, they have yokes with paddle shifters, over course it is a bit different but the idea remains the same.

I'm a Toyota fanboy, and I'm really trying to wait for THEM to get into EV, I don't care to have a tesla...i trust Toyota more than any other manufacturer. However, they are gonna have to do better than this as far as EV...they can do it, they just gotta do it. I do like this car, I like what they are doing with the yoke, but the battery...come on Toyota, you are the ones who really took the hybrid stuff to the next level. There's no way they can't do better than this for full EV...these things need range. Plus seeing as that the charging network these run off of really isn't that great...need better battery, I drive far a couple times a year..I wouldn't feel comfortable taking this car across the country.

I think car designers (perhaps driven by safety standards) build cars that NEED huge wheels to look right proportionately, but no one wants to drive around or buy tires for huge 21 inch wheels. The rear end arches just make those wheels look tiny.

Not sure why Substitute Topher says the yoke steering is perfectly fine...it seems to me that he is having trouble keeping the vehicle centered on the highway because the steering is just too sensitive. Plus zero steering feel. Not sure why anyone would choose to option this.

    Very nice interior and dash.
Not fond of the aircraft yoke, the answer to no question. Might even be the cause of a few accidents, we shall see.
200 miles is not exactly reassuring range.
Weird sunroof with no shade, no standard models in the desert states.

No way I'd get it with such a horrible range. I have a Tesla that gets (they say) 330 miles. Realistically it gets at best where I live probably 290-300. It's not an issue for daily driving but when you need the extra range every few months you'd want it. It's just a different way of commuting that ICE vehicles and that range doesn't work beyond daily short drives and charging at least every other night.

196 miles of range isn’t any good but for local driving. I can tell you from experience working at a big company that uses 4 Tesla Model Ys with 300ish miles of range it’s super stressful to use… Many of my co workers run out of charge and is left stranded due to the Tesla saying you can get to the destination and back but the battery % reduces rapidly toward the middle/end of the trip.

Nice review, thank you. I like the design and interior, for the most part. Only reservations I have are around the shiny black exterior wheel arches, lack of glovebox, and uncompetitive range. Everything else looks Lexus solid. This car would be good if you have a garage with home charger and do minimal neighborhood/short commutes, eg WFH lifestyle. I would be hesitant to go on road trips, which is frankly a concern for all EVs at this time, especially any EV that doesn’t benefit from Tesla’s network.
