I saw that mighty horse race many times at Harold Park. I still have a print with Halwes photo in colour and history of his racing career, surrounding his photo. It was my Dad's pride & joy
Forgotten by many, but not me. I adored Halwes.. I think he would have hurt Popular Alm over 2700+ metres .. Incredible ability to sprint very fast and sustain those blistering sprints even towards the last 6 or more furlongs and winning by going further away. Other horses hearts were effectively by Halwes. I am 69 years old now and was 18 when I first saw him. I didn't know till recently that Aub Wesley never raced him in Victoria and at the Showgrounds after the stewards upheld a Robyn Dundee protest against Halwes .. a shockingly wrong decision. I couldn't afford to go to Harold Park after that in those days ... a terrible shame and shocking indictment against the stewards !!!!!
Who knows..... in NZ I was told that Halwes did not wear foot wear that absorbed the jarring that probably caused his lameness. This was against Aub's normal routine and who knows.....
