    Truck nuts
    Fugo three way
    Clam Bukake
    Three things I never expected to hear in a book review.
    Bravo sir!

      clam bukkake was the only appropriate phrase to describe what was going on. I'm just grateful Laline Paull stayed away from an episode involving an octopus because there is already enough tentacle porn out in the world.

    OMG, I could not stop laughing while watching this!😂😂😂 I know this is supposed to make me NOT want to read this book, but it’s actually doing the opposite! I actually loved The Bees and would recommend that one…and I still eat honey. 😂

    • @ThePoptimist
      @ThePoptimist  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      LOL - Laline has definitely found her lane and I've only heard good things about The Bees (which I think was nominated for the prize when it came out too - so she clearly resonates with folks!) Pod was just too much for me!

      Ditto. So funny! Thanks for the warning, although, as Jenn G says, your review makes me pretty curious to check out the book, AND I loved The Bees, too! The Bees is quite a bit less sex-obsessed than Pod seems to be; after all, there are strict rules against non-Queen bees having sex. Thanks for the delightfully squeamy review. :)

    • @ThePoptimist
      @ThePoptimist  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good to know - was just imagining Paull writing in "squeamy" detail about the bees pollinating flowers and who needs that taking up real estate in your brain.

    Now I know why the ocean is so salty…….
    I read it. Very strange. Very rapey. Loved the trans fish. Loved the military dolphin. I think the broader subject matter of how humans are completely trashing the planet is why it made the short list. Thats the only thing I can think of. I would love to hear the conversation of the judges. 😮
    Thanks for the laughs. Didnt help that your audio ended up sounding like you were underwater. 😂

    • @ThePoptimist
      @ThePoptimist  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Taiji cove dolphin hunt was also there (and that was a rabbit hole!) I really did feel like it wrapped up way too quickly and the new pack alpha, come on. The trans fish felt like it should have just been it's own short story and not wedged in here - but then I wouldn't have been able to offer up clam bukkake in a book review so there's that.

    This review just made me think "WTF". Haha. Also, it reminded me of a video that I saw of a dolphin "masturbating" into a dead fish. I kind of blocked that out of my memory but this vid made me remember lol

  • @alldbooks9165
    @alldbooks9165 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for this. The naturalist in me feels like I should read and enjoy Pod especially since I read and enjoyed The Bees, but my heart has balked at the thought of reading about dolphin gang rape. I think I’ll stick to Flipper. On a side note, I liked Glory a lot. It was flawed in the pacing but has some brilliant passages.

    • @ThePoptimist
      @ThePoptimist  ปีที่แล้ว

      I get it, nonconsensual mating is common in dolphin species and it is touched on lightly on the page, but it happens a couple times throughout the book and I guess I just wasn't ready for that. Even beyond that though I found it disjointed and way to conveniently wrapped up.

    😂 I'm kinda glad the first person I saw review the book mentioned all the sex and I decided it was not for me, even though they loved the book despite of that. I'm currently so scatterbrained that I can barely focus on complicated texts so been reading a lot of SFF, preferably novellas. It's fun, but not in a mindframe to understand something like Pod.

    • @ThePoptimist
      @ThePoptimist  ปีที่แล้ว

      The reading has been pretty erratic this year, just short infrequent bursts - genre novellas might actually be a better way for me too!

    So… I grew up with Flipper on the TV (you may be too young for this reference) and now you have shattered my juvenile illusions. With aspersions cast upon the bees. I understand, you were distraught. I would be too. At least you had a group to help process everything. I’ll steer clear of that book thank you very much. 😂

    • @ThePoptimist
      @ThePoptimist  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Never saw an episode of Flipper but old enough to remember it being part of the cultural consciousness. Flipper is definitely a big part of the reason dolphins are seen as friendly (non-rapey) underwater mammals.

    @judybrown1624 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    When I saw you were reviewing Pod, I was afraid you'd liked it! I gave up on it before the first rape! The writing was so bad IMO. I'd love to know which judge insisted it make the short list.

    • @ThePoptimist
      @ThePoptimist  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think she'd been shortlisted before with The Bees (folks seem to have liked that one better) but even without the rape this still felt all over the place, far too conveniently wrapped up, and a weird mix of pulled from facts and completely made up. Just wild

    Oh man, this was so funny! I actually liked Pod. I am the only person I have heard of that did. But at the same time, I agree with all of your points. It was weird! And disturbing! And I have no idea what that says about me. But it was just so different from anything I have ever read before. And it feels everything has been done a million times already. But I have definitely never read a book like this.

      @@ThePoptimist I haven't tried gin yet, but it's nice to know I've identified a great tonic to go with it. Someone recommended Hendricks. Thoughts? Do I need another spirits rabbit hole (or budget black hole)?

      Don't know enough yet on the gin side of things to make too many recommendations - the Sevilla was the one recommended to be by our local bourbon/scotch bar as the one I could actually get locally and the Weavers dry gin to look for when I travelled.
