For anyone wondering why it was a big deal, it’s because this was Mark and Robert’s field of knowledge and expertise. They wanted to ask questions because they were intrigued on how it worked. But Damon and Lori basically didn’t give them a chance. However, Mark’s done this numerous times in the past. Where there’s smoke, there’s fire.

Very disingenuous comment on how Mark does it too. Mark only does this when the bidding has begun, which is a VERY common business tactic. He never does it while others are still asking about the business. Lori and Daymond intentionally pushed for the deal because 1 - it was cheap and 2 - they know Robert and Mark are the perfect partners so they didn't want to give them a chance.

@@trestoprotolia3923 I agree Mark did this before but i think what we need to point out here is the "WHY" Mark puts pressurized offer versus the "WHY" behind Lori and Daymondz offer"
Mark puts pressurized offer when he fully understands the business and that he can contribute to grow the business.
While Lori and Daymond reason for the pressurized offer is "it felt good. oh and about the business plan.. We will figure it out"
      just my 2 cents🤙

Update - the deal with Lori/Daymomd was completed and the company doubled their net worth to more than $5M! Within hours after the episode aired, the Scholly site received 80,000 requests in a few hours. Since December 2016, 850,000 users have downloaded the app, connecting students with $50 million in scholarships.
Gray has met with Bill Gates, been honored by Oprah Winfrey and invited twice to the White House. Steve Case, the AOL co-founder and former CEO, awarded a $100,000 competitive grant to Scholly. He also teamed with Grey’s Anatomy star Jesse Williams.

Generally tech businesses choose Robert or Mark since they have tech expierience. The upside to gaining tech industry expierience with a promising idea, in a way that Robert and Mark wouldn't fight them, was worth the risk of not knowing the rest of the business model.

I don’t see the problem. They’ve stated many times that saying “deal” in the show does not mean it’s the final decision/agreement… behind the scenes, they look over the business model and determine if this is the right choice. If they wanted to make a deal with this person so badly, they would’ve also made an offered regardless of the lack of information being provided (because they will learn more later) and the guy gave everyone a chance to make an offer and they didn’t. To my knowledge, mark is very much notorious for jumping in and saying “take my deal now but if you listen to anyone else, I’m out” so it’s a bit hypocritical. At the ending of the day, it’s shark tank. There aren’t any set of rules nor is it their money that’s being spent. In addition, theres been multiple instances where sharks/shark tank have made “charity” deals. It is what it is

    • @ButterSwagBag

I came into this episode from the short clip of fighting at the end. Was on Robert's side because he's always a stand-up guy. What did Lori do wrong? Nothing. Lori did the right thing and scooped it up. Was it a risk? Yes. Big risk at that point. The rest of the Sharks could have heard the guy out and offered more. She got there first and made the kill though. Side note-Thanks for the update Thiru C! Very good to hear. I wish this was around when I went to college.

The issue is they're not there to be angel investors or charity. How many times have you heard a shark mention that they take equity because of the experience and guidance that they can do to help an individual succeed. That's why they have a panel of several sharks all with different backgrounds. The point is for the entrepreneur to choose not only based on best deal fiscally, but best deal through mentorship.
How many times have you seen a rejected deal or something that didn't work out and the cast and entrepreneur are happy with the end result because they learned a lot to help make changes or create a better business?
Imagine now, that mark and Robert are the tech guys and can help make a business, no, a vision of a better place, more efficient and scaled in scope, and instead of being able to help in their very specialized ways, sniped because your peers are throwing money to help the guy out.
If the goal is to get money, there's tons of philanthropists out there, if the goal is to create a scaled business with the veteran knowledge of those in the industry... Well then Lori and daymond just blew that opportunity to 'feel good'.

    • @patmyles7365

update: it was acquired by Sallie Mae in 2023 for an undisclosed amount. However, Damon mentioned in an update that he made about 40 to 60 times return on investment. So lets say it was 50 times. He went in for 20k at 7,5%. 50 times that is 1m. 1m/7,5*100 = 13.333.333,33 dollars. So it was prolly around 13m acquisition. Not the biggest shark tank succes story but certainly not bad at all.
