I'd loke to know what kind of engine this is cause to my knowledge, it's the only one I know has a jake brake and I'd like to swap out a scania inline 6 for this. Well it's a Volvo FH4 ( FH, 4th generation ) and there is a sticker on the door saying it's 600 BHP, so from my understanding, it's unlikely to be the D13 engine but more like the D16 engine which is big money ( FH16 ), I don't think Volvo make 600 BHP in the D13 engines am sure it only goes up to 540 BHP or 560 BHP in the D13 engine, and I believe what you can hear is a proper retarder and not just an exhaust brake, these are an optional extra when ordering one, you pay extra to upgrade from the factory fitted exhaust brake to the retarder, which you would not normally hear all that much on a standard example, but because it has straight pipes fitted, you can really hear the engine a whole lot more.
Sounds like a regular exhaust brake. Pretty common option on most Volvos, though usually only used in unison with the retarder at stage 2 and 3. However when putting the retarder in auto mode (meaning it'll activate alongside your brake pedal) the exhaust brake is usually alot more prominent and pronounced, which I imagine is the case in this instance. Engine is a D16, ranges between 540 and 750hp. (600hp in that particulaf truck) Though the D13, with 540hp and less, is also available with the same exhaust brake.
