DIY RTK GPS Drone Build | You'll never believe how accurate it is...

  • Conventional GPS on drones are good for basic navigation, but only get about 4-5 feet of accuracy. If you have an application that requires inch level precision, this just wouldn’t cut it. Thankfully, a proper RTK GPS set up can be used to get inch level precision. Until very recently, RTK GPS used to cost thousands of dollars. Today, you can get a module for $250 bucks.
But will it work on a drone? Getting the inch level accurate GPS coordinates are one thing, but can the autopilot use it for say… a novel approach to precision landing? Precision landing is a requirement for many drone delivery applications. The current standard for achieving precision landing (consistent lands under say.. a foot), are IR Lock and Computer Vision algorithms tracking an aruco marker.
    dojofordrones.com/diy-rtk-gps...
If precision landing could be conducted with just an RTK GPS module, it would be a GAME CHANGER for drones. But can a pure RTK GPS solution to precision landing actually match the performance of other standards? That’s what we investigate in this video.

So my drone uses regular gps and can land on a dime because it also takes a picture during take off and re aligns during landing

I'm trying to build a mapping Drone with rtk and a mechanical shutter. I am planning on trying to add a machine learning model on it in the future also. All the other parts are more basic. I need help finding the right parts and getting the Drone to work. Do you know of any people or resources that can help me?

I am wondering, if mobile base and fixed base station could be combined to eliminate the compass and have precision navigation at the same time.

(polished by llama3 to ease the understanding, down you have the original idea that I was thinking from my ADHD mind)
The primary purpose of an RTK (Real-Time Kinematic) system is to calculate the deviation of the GPS location from a fixed reference point. This fixed point serves as a constant anchor, unaffected by changes in the GPS signal. When the GPS signal deviates from this fixed point, the RTK system sends the deviation data to the mobile station, which then uses this information to determine the true location, taking into account the deviation from the fixed reference point.
It's important to note that having two mobile stations, with one acting as an RTK, would not achieve the same result. This is because both mobile stations would still be relying on GPS signals, which can be affected by various sources of error. In this scenario, the 'RTK' mobile station would not provide a reliable fixed reference point, as it would still be subject to GPS signal deviations. As a result, the system would not be able to accurately calculate the deviations and provide a precise location.
Original from my ADHD brain: I think the need of an rtk is to calculate the deviation of the gps location from the fixed point (where it should be fixed always, regardless of the position signal from the GPS) - and when gps signal deviates from the fixed point (where it should be fixed): then it sends that gps deviation to the mobile station telling what is the true location including the deviation of the fixed point.
