VALFURVA & GHIACCIAIO DEI FORNI, Valtellina & Stelvio National Park

The Forni glacier is located in Upper Valtellina , on altitude, 2,600−3,670 m a.s.l. , within the Lombard sector of the Stelvio National Park, and it is the second largest glacier in the Italian Alps by extension after the Adamello glacier.
The glacier currently covers just under 11 km². Over the last 150 years the glacial surface has shrunk intensely, by about 36%, and the tongue has retreated by about 2 km while its thickness has reduced by about 70 m.
Due to the melting of the glacial layer, in the upper Valtellina, on the peaks of the Stelvio National Park, the remains of the Fist World War high-altitude fighting re-emerge today: armaments, sleds, straw beds, lanterns, newspapers, coins, clothing and boxes of food . All kind of war objects from 1914-'18
