  • If you ask most veterinary professionals what to do first if a client brings in their vomiting, anorexic diabetic cat, they’ll say without hesitation: Check a blood glucose! But, as we learned from Renee Rucinsky, DVM, DABVP(F), a BG might not tell you what you need to know if that patient is taking Bexacat™, the new oral diabetes drug for cats. In this conversation, she addresses some FAQs regarding what this drug is, how to use it, and why it’s a gamechanger-as well as why it’s not the right choice for every diabetic cat.
We hope to see you in San Diego this September 20-23 for AAHA Con! This redesigned conference experience will have content for the entire veterinary team. Registration is OPEN NOW for AAHA Con 2023! Snag your spot at aaha.org/aahacon!

My 11 yr old cat Pepe went into diabetic ketoacidosis yesterday and I had to put him down last night. I didn't know he had diabetes. 🥺

My Boy Samy who seemed to be in perfect health crossed the rainbow bridge last Wednesday at 4 years of age, he was fine until he suddenly lost weight and 1 week later passed away...i was devastated, miss him so much, i hate myself for not catching his diabetes before, the only red flag was he used to run to me when he heard water, i thought he just liked water for some off reason..

Great presentation. I would like to mention that there is a fb support group for cat owners for these meds. They are seeing some cats go hypo. As cats head toward remission their BG may dip near 50 2 to 6 hrs after medicating Many lower the dose as a result amd gradually taper off. I prefer the senvelgo for that reason. My 10 lb cat is doing well on a 7 lb dose.

My 10 yr old cat Marley battled fatty liver disease and megacolon for 2 months. After 2 failed enemas a manual extraction of feces saved his life. He is a super picky eater and finding Tiki Cat wet food was a game changer to get him to eat. Expensive but the food is such high quality. Thru this long recovery I noticed he was very thirsty, urinated large amounts frequently and his back hind legs were weak. I knew then there was a bigger issue at play. Diabetes. Thru all of this Marley's Kidneys, Liver and Pancreas remained strong. He was a candidate for Bexacat and he started today. I pray this works for him. Thank you for such an informative video.

My cat took Bexacat for 1 month and now has to switch to insulin. His fPL level was tested 2 weeks after starting Bexacat and was 10.4 then increased to 22 two weeks after that. His ketone level was over 4. Luckily he was acting ok.

@@BrianSmith-zx6ph Hello Brian, my cat Duma,17, had been diagnosed with diabetes for a year before I started giving her Bexacat. I gave it to her for six months. At first I think it helped her, but something happened and she started having UTIs, not eating, still drinking lots of water. I could tell she was suffering. I had her put to sleep in early December. I think your cat has a better chance on Bexacat since he was recently diagnosed and he’s younger. Keep reading all you can about feline diabetes. I hope lives a long life.💟☮️💟

Just started my cat on Bexacat this week. And just as you had suggested, I had her back at the vet's office on day 4 to check her ketones which were negative and that is great. And I have ordered a blood ketone monitor kit to check her at home. I am hoping she does well and that this is a good solution for both my cat and for me.

i have a question. i read a condition to use bexacat, never done insulin to the cat. my veterinary told us to do, we tried for a week but we have many problems with glicemia value. so he told us use Minidiab (Glipizide)...unfortunatly value Is about 350/400, so i would like ti try bexacat, but It Is non commercial in Italy. My question Is: can i use bexacat even if i do 1 week, about 2 months ago, of insulin? It Is possible?

Dry food contains a lot of carbs & it's often the least expensive option for cat owners.

My cat was just diagnosed w/ diabetes yesterday…she was always thin & very active but started drinking plus peeing nonstop and lost 1/3 of her weight! I blame the Temptations treats, out of my love for her, I foolishly gave them to her every night to make her happy but instead I made her very ill 😢
