Patrice Rushen is another artist that is underrated…this lady does it all. She is a composer, record producer, plays multiple instruments and a song writer. This lady is a force to be reckoned with!😎🔥👍🏾
I agree, she created the blueprint sound for a lot of the 90's female groups like SWV and others. Her jazz fusion side is there with Herbie Hancock and Bob James. She is Fire.
Alicia Keys wish she was as great as Patrice Rushen! She good but she not on the same level as Patrice. To me Patrice Rushen is the Female version of Prince, as far as being able to play every instrument imaginable. Plus her voice is one of the sweetest voices god has ever made.
@@shamoriwall Thank you! Thank you! Patrice was a producer as well. She did music for the Jay Leno show, scores for movies she wasnt just a singer that played an instrument. She played the hell out of that keyboard and every other instrument she played. Alicia Keys could never! Lol Im glad somebody said something cause I was getting ready to go in on that comment🤣🤣🤣
Thank you for finally saying the line that I wanted to hear someone from your generation say."Thats why yall say that aint no music"! Someone finally gets it.lol Yes,Its really an honest place that us old heads be coming from.We arent just tearing this generations music down.We really just grew up with much better music.
Alicia is an artist, but in a month of Sundays, should never be mentioned in the same breath as the living legend Patrice Rushen. Someone who can flow seamlessly through different genres, an inspiration to Prince. The list goes on.. respectfully of course.
Young man.....this song came out when i was 12 years old. i am 51 now and i play it on a daily basis. my generation of music had heart and integrity and when you hear older folks say today music is just noise, believe that. Please listen to another jam by Patrice Rushen called "Feel So Real(Mind Won't Let Go). Blessings!!!!
This song is 40 years old to the date. Miss Patrice Rushen is a prolific songwriter, composer, singer, conductor and she plays 24 instruments on her albums to her own credit. She also conducts symphony orchestras to this day since being out of the music industry as a recording artist. She also has a TV One "Unsung" episode that might be here on TH-cam.com
Yes indeed, back in the 70’s and 80’s, we were spoiled by the top notch level of talent that artists had to have to be successful , real singers, matched with real songwriters matched with real musicians , you just didn’t get a record contract if you had no talent at a high level. So we were full of hit after hit after hit of great music and artistry . Patrice was successful because she had a level of talent higher than most , she was a songwrighter, singer, but also a master musician that could play many instruments , and was a master in jazz and well as R&B. The last 20 or 30 odd years she has devoted most of her talent to jazz, which was her first love, as she had played with the best jazz greats already as a young teenager. Before Alicia Keys and H.E.R., who are both known for their musicianship as well as their singing, there was Patrice Rushen.
Now when you talk about underrated musicians Patrice Rushen would be atop of that list. She plays an assortment of different musical instruments. She has been the musical director of the Grammys and Oscar's. She is deftly talented. Prince marveled at her talent.
Patrice helped Prince get his record deal & he had a crush on her. He wrote I Feel For You about her & later allowed Chaka Khan to record it. Patrice was best friends with bassist Larry Graham's 1st wife, but fell for him. The affair broke that friendship & marriage. Thankfully now she's been married to someone else over 30 years. She's been the musical director for a lot of award shows too. She's a fantastic musician. People are always amazed at how tiny she is.
@@NikkiKNuvo Don't just believe everything you see or hear. To my knowledge, Larry Graham's wife Tina (whom he is still married to, is his only wife). The other information, I don't know.
Yes, a master pianist indeed. However, she comes out of the world of Jazz & Jazz Fusion. When she started to make more commercial tunes they fell under the umbrella of Jazz-Funk, hence the jazzy funky groove of her output from 1978 - 1982.
Oh!, I see you taking this to another level, yes Ms. Patrice teach these youngins something about REAL music. If there was a female "Prince" this is one right here.

I am deeply blessed to have grown up in a era of music that is without a doubt, the best in the world!
Quite a masterful artist, she. Sings and plays all those keys, Rhodes electric piano (the solo), the funky MiniMoog synth bass, a wah-wah clavinet (like Stevie Wonder's "Superstition"). "Forget Me Nots" is another one of her jams. Old school, this. 70s & 80s. "Dazz," by Brick was around that time, too.
Nice reaction! This song has been sampled a lot in hip hop. Patrice is a very talented artist- writer, producer, director, musician, singer, arranger, composer and she teaches music at USC. Prince's hit song- I Wanna Be Your Lover, is about Patrice. Some more very good songs from Patrice are: Feels So Real (Won't Let Go), Settle For My Love, When I Found You, Forget Me Nots, Never Gonna Give You Up (Won't Let You Be), Number One, Haven't You Heard & Where There Is Love...just to name a few.
