If you want to support the film industry, you should see if any local stores are re-spooling and developing ECN-2 process Kodak 250D (what this film is)

      Oh yes, that "local" shop would respools ECN-2 process Kodak 250D, that doesn't exist or cost way more. • @Fjalll

    It's most certainly another modified film of Kodak. They probably get the film delivered without the remjet now - translated into "not a repackaged motion picture film". It looks very similar to the Kodak Vision3 250D. Which can be had for $5 if you look around. Beats Portra all the way

    • @trulsdirio
      @trulsdirio 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I mean they might pretty much get all their film that way now. They have had their own edge markings done by Kodak for a while, so it would be strange if that would not go in hand with Kodak just omitting the remjet application as well.

    400D’s colors look like 800T‘s when you shoot that in daylight with an 85 filter. CineStill are weirdly vague about the origin of the film. I don’t think it’s a new emulsion. They never said it’s a new emulsion. And it wouldn’t make sense either. Why would that look so much like 800T with an 85 filter then. The Vision3 films all have very similar looks to each other.
    And it’s also incredibly hard to make a new color negative emulsion. To make it look this much like C41 processed Vision3 would mean they’d did a whole lot of reverse engineering.
    Also you have to note somewhere in your videos or your description how the negs were scanned. 50% of the look of color neg film is display prep and if you don’t say that we’re to able to meaningfully evaluate the look of a film. It’s important to know what scanner was used, with that settings if there were any that might strongly influence the look and what else was done to the pictures.

    I think is obiviously 250D with remjet pre-removed(or never applied) by kodak. Using c41 process will not get the most out of these motion picture film since c41 is using cd-4 instead of the cd-3 in ecn2 chemical, thus giving colors different to the original 250D. It will also screw up the balance in c41 chemical and affect the color of other films processed in later batches(according to the tests done by one of my local lab). People should push labs around the world to do ecn-2 process so that we can shoot cheap kodak vision3 motion picture films. I've shot loads of 250D in the past 6 months and was extremely happy with the result, basically a portra pro version with more strict requirement of light control.

    • @GregoryVeizades
      @GregoryVeizades 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Ok. I'll bite. I don't believe that processing this film will screw up chemicals. I work at a lab and when this starts showing up in masse, I'll run many control strips to see if there is any visible difference. I doubt we'll see it. Especially with proper replenishment you are replacing a large amount of developer in short order. 40ml/roll if memory serves and my machine runs 7x35mm per rack.
      We already process a lot of 50D and 800T. Especially last month with the Color film shortage. There was a time a good 40% of our developed film was 50D or 800T and we didn't see any densitometry shifts on our control strips. Nothing outside the margin of error, or something that couldn't be explained by another process issue, which we are constantly fine tuning.

    • @rolandzzj6107
      @rolandzzj6107 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GregoryVeizades With proper relenishment and constant check of control strips sure it will not be a huge enough difference to be visible to customer side, but realistically not all labs are doing those. My point is that processing these motion picture fims in c41 will always be less ideal than ecn2. Unless someone is using those as art fims.

    Cinestill 400D is only worth it if Cinestill gets off their ass and actually gets the film into the hands of those who paid for it up front!!!
    I bought some 400D back in mid-March 2022 as part of their kickstarter campaign and here it is July 29th and my goddamn film hasn't even shipped yet. I reached out to Cinestill in May and was told that the order I thought I placed as an early bird order was not, and that my film would be shipping in July. Then about a week ago, I asked why I have not yet gotten any information about when my film was shipping. Cinestill told me that all non-early bird orders should be shipping sometime later in the summer, and they appreciate my patience as they're dealing with logistical issues outside their control.
    I call bullshit on Cinestill for dragging this out. I'm very disappointed at the wait time, and now I'm not expecting my film before September. I'm not inclined to ever order another Cinestill product.

    Several of theses images remind me of the work of Henry Wessel. The image tones remind me of Kodachrome II.

    If you don't want your photos to have a film look then why don't you just shoot digital? It would seem that if you are shooting film that you want it to have the look of film (saturated like Velvia, tight grain like Tri-X, almost no grain like Adox 25, etc). One picks a particular film generally because of its distinctive color/contrast look. I don't shoot Portra most of the time because it really is a portrait looking film. When I shoot color film, it is generally Ektar. When I want a more sterile, no grain , all in focus look I shoot digital. But maybe I'm misunderstanding your comment about not shooting film to get a film look?

    • @RK-rf8rc
      @RK-rf8rc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      i think he means he wants to shoot film but he prefers a more neutral-looking film, like portra, rather than a film stock that is very distinctive, like kodak gold or velvia or, in this case, cinestill 400d

    I’m happy I didn’t pre-order this at its launch. It seems offensive that Cinestill is selling this at a premium. It renders colors so flatly like decades old expired film plus some halation. Good video nonetheless.

    • @soza.pidgeon
      @soza.pidgeon 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It may also be in Willems shooting and editing process, like every film lab delivers different scans. I wouldn't consider it offensive if no one knows the cost of production

    • @britt_taylor
      @britt_taylor 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@soza.pidgeon Willem isn’t new to film photography. I surmise that his photos are true to the stock’s colors just like they are when he shoots Portra. As for the pricing, this renders colors poorly for a stock that costs just as much if not more per roll than professionally graded stocks. Those are just facts.

  • @RK-rf8rc
    @RK-rf8rc 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    not a fan of this judging by this video. the range seems to be pretty poor (highlights are looking overexposed a lot). also, maybe it's because youre using a new camera but i felt a lot of these photos werent very sharp and kinda lazy compositionally. no hate, been a subscriber for 2 years, im just used to you making a lot better photos
