The song appears on the European version of the "Music" album. It was the last song on the album. Personally I love it, and think it fits in well on the album as its a William Orbit production.
Rupert Everett convinced Madonna to record it for the movie they did together “The Next Best Thing”. She was very reluctant, but agreed to it ONLY if he sang on the track too, which he did, doing the backing vocals.
It also was a big hit for her, getting to #1 in many countries, including the UK, Australia, Canada, Italy, Spain, Germany and many more...so people did like it 🙂

In Don McLean’s iconic song “American Pie”, the phrase “whiskey and rye” appears in the chorus:
“And them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
Singin’, ‘This’ll be the day that I die.’
‘This’ll be the day that I die.’”
Let’s delve into the meaning behind this intriguing line:
Bye, Bye, Miss American Pie: Contrary to popular legend, the title “American Pie” was not the name of the plane that Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson tragically crashed in on February 3, 1959, in Clear Lake, Iowa. The actual plane had the identification number N3794N. McLean himself clarified that he coined the term “American Pie.” Nonetheless, the crash site is memorialized, and fans still visit it annually for tribute concerts.
Drove My Chevy to the Levee: These lines symbolize the death of the American dream. The Chevy represents a popular car among youth, and the levee refers to a gathering spot where teens hung out without adult supervision.
Them Good Old Boys Were Drinkin’ Whiskey and Rye:
The phrase “This’ll be the day that I die” is a play on Buddy Holly’s hit recording “That’ll Be The Day.”
There’s no evidence that Holly and Richardson were drinking whiskey or rye on the night of the crash.
An alternate theory suggests that McLean might be singing “drinking whiskey in Rye,” as rye is a type of whiskey.
Interestingly, McLean’s hometown, New Rochelle, featured a bar called “The Levee.”
So, the song weaves together nostalgia, tragedy, and cultural references, leaving us with a timeless piece of musical storytelling. 🎶🥃

It went straight to number 1 on the German charts, selling hundreds of thousands of CD copies in one week, weirdly enough. That had never happened before in the single charts. Which is also so weird for a Madonna song being a number 1 there, since the last one had only been La Isla Bonita (Germans are so strange).

Hey J, its probably been mentioned 1000 times. (Sorry to bore you). The songs just quite an important part (not sang like this) for a dying friend with Rupert in it. 'The next best thing' (Dont bother watching it). Rupert made her do a remix to the song so this is it. Its obvious she just wanted it left on the soundtrack. She didnt want it on Music. (It wasnt in all countries) but it ended being a bloody smash (number 1 in the UK) So its stuck on in the countries it was a smash in at the end to get sales.
Think how random Vogue was on stuck on the end of Im Breathless lol. Out of her stubborn strops. Later stages she left Warners. She had a tantrum about Impressive Instant not being a single too. Mustve been some heated meetings! You can tell by the video she did for American Pie she didnt intend for it to be a hit. Haha Bless her, she was so popular in the UK/EU ect then people lapped it up. I dont think she's ever sang it live and didnt promote it. Guess good luck to her, im not keen of the song but she did it the best.

  • @brooklynbrownsater
    @brooklynbrownsater 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

Madonna was convinced to record this so the soundtrack to her and Rupert Everett’s movie Next Best Thing would have a radio friendly single as her song “Time Stood Still” wasn’t seen as single material. It was never intended for Music, but after it was successful her record label added it to the Music album’s international pressings as a bonus track which pissed Madonna off and is why she didn’t include it on GHV2. She later said she probably should have included it on the greatest hits album because it’s not a bad song and it was successful, but it shouldn’t have been added to Music as it was never intended as part of that project.

Despite being American, I was never that familiar with this song. I'd heard the chorus enough to know it but that's about it. It was a mystery to me when she covered it (Rupert apparently coerced her into doing it because there was a brief moment where they sing the song in the film they did together). I never loved it and thought the Orbit sound was played out by this point. THAT SAID, years later, I actually kind of dig it. As you said, her vocals are great and the production is very nice. But I also think it makes a lot of sense in retrospect. She's an American icon and the verses she chose to highlight are all about the power of music (and dancing). The mention of the holy ghost also fits in really well with her identity. I don't know. It just clicked with me years later, probably because I had practically no attachment to the original at all. I agree that some of the lyrics are cheesy, but I think her version is kind of ironic. And yeah, it was a HUGE hit in the UK and other parts of the world, ironically. That's probably why they tacked it on overseas. But I agree it had no business being on the album. And it's not on the US version so I don't even consider it a Music song.

Buddy, prepare to be roasted by music fans. It's not about how great the 60's were... it's a sad and nostalgic look back at the tragedy of his idol Buddy Holly's death who had a #1 hit with "That'll Be The Day (When I Die)" hence the similar line in this chorus. The plane crash was coined "The Day The Music Died" due to Richie Valens and The Big Bopper also dying in same plane) but also a look back at key events in music and American events in not a direct manner but using impressionistic references.
I think the problem with Madonna's version is, as she herself mentioned, even attempting a cover of a classic well-known song. She cuts the verses which mention all the historic and tragic elements which is fine for the purposes of her version but I think the biggest problem is it removes all the emotion (except maybe in the intro) and the lines "This'll be the day that I die" and "The day the music died" lose all their meaning. The synth music backing is too cringey for fans of the original.

It was a huge hit in Europe, it had a heavy rotation on MTV, her voice was heavenly, she emerged this (sorry) boring song to a new level, it could have replaced Holiday on her tours, but since she just occasionally sings her songs written for movies, I am sure we will never see her doing it live. (just like This Used to be, I'll Remember, Gambler or the Dick Tracy songs). What a pity. I prefer the song to Music. I think to put this song to the album, it needed to be more acoustic, since to album is kinda folky.

People mainly missed the mark on this one - just like Justify My Love was a precursor to Erotica the album, this was an "intro" to the American Lie (no f in pronouncing).
The video got awards for "cinematography" and the song came about at the funeral scene in the movie The Next Best Thing.
However if you watch closely, she's in rags with horrible makeup, dancing disjointed moves and portraying a classic American bimbo's outlook, while the video depicts every single oppressed and down rotten group of common folk which make up the majority of working-class Americans.
With the middle section where cheerleading turns to saluting the Military Industrial Complex, It's obviously an extreme criticism of the whole notion of "the land of the free and the home of the brave".
I hate the song as much as you do, the only redeeming quality being her singing it, but take a look at the video again through the prism of what late stage capitalism brought to the class devide in the ol' US of A❣️
This was before Iraq#2, she was years ahead on this one as well, people generally just choose not to understand cause it takes putting up a mirror and taking a look at the worst aspects of American Empire.
Brilliant if you ask me 🤷

Just observe where she was artistically at this time:
Two previous videos were Beautiful Stranger which was a perfectly executed tongue in cheek homage to the 60's Bond era AND
Nothing Really Matters which you already covered - an insanely perverted but deep & futuristic portrait of "love, life and humanity".
In American Pie she spits on every aspect of what constitutes "Americanism" showing in full detail all the cracks of the system.
Unfortunately, she didn't have the balls to bring the "observation" to full circle by releasing the original American Lie (again no f) video, but the watered down version, and this is where her downfall as a "rebel" begins.
After that she went from a profound anti-establishment critic who was always questioning and pushing the envelope to a classic neo-liberal shill. I guess age, children and having lots to lose in the 00's were too much of a bargain even for her.

I hope that it grows on you. I agree that this song should not have been included on the Music album but instead with The Best Thing album.
Madonna was suggested to record this song for her soundtrack to her movie The Next Best Thing by her costar Rupert Everett who is also in the music video of this song. He felt that the song would be perfect and appropriate for one of the scenes in the movie. The movie was released in March of 00 and it's about a close friendship between a gay man and his best friend a single woman who is feeling the biological time clock.

I love Madonna's version, but the reason why she covered it is because it's a classic song. The song is not pretentious at all, it tells a story of that time period.
