Additional video in the Model T Tips with alternate method of setting the field coil gap.
    7/7/2019 Correction:
    Text Should Read:
Measured Gap (using feeler gauge) = X (be sure to measure with installed shims)
Maximum Additional Shims Required = X less 0.025"
    Minimum Additional Shims = X less 0.040"
Negative X values means existing shims must be removed to achieve desired gap.
    1. Install and Level Field Coil
    2. Loosen Field Coil and Install Flywheel with Magnets
    3. Measure Gap for Minimum of 0.025" to Maximum of 0.040"
    4. Calculate required shim pack, remove flywheel, adjust shim pack and reinstall

if the flywheel is to close would it be easer to shim between the crank and the main shaft to bring the flywheel out or would it not be advised todo that

We would not advise shimming between the crankshaft and the main shaft.

Why even level the coil first. The magnets will level it with the bolts loose & then measure each bolt location & do the math for the shim required for each bolt hole ?

Eileen, you are correct you can do it that way. I like to use the one piece shims if at all possible so leveling the field coil first gives me an idea about how close I am going to be to the final.
