Ben Brode playing Skullbriar but constantly arguing against Commander damage is certainly a choice. A hilarious one, in fact.

It makes sense though, it cuts off his fun. Making Skullbriar any bigger than a 21/21 feels less than ideal.
I mean I totally see the mentality that it invalidates the life total, I feel that way about infect
I guess I just think commander damage has a cool personal element and serves as a build around mechanic that makes the game more combat focused which I think is overall fun and cool
@@lfwalrusI also like it as an out against lifegain. Without commander damage as a threat it can feel like a heavy lifegain deck just invalidates combat as a wincon.

My favourite part was Ben proclaiming "see, commander damage did not matter, just like it does in any commander game" before passing the turn and then having commander damage matter immediately. The sheer amount of delicious irony was palpable
What makes it even more hilarious is that the rest of the table just ignored Ben conceding before the damage was dealt and still gave Chris all that extra lifelink life.
@CrazyChris576 it's a pretty common unspoken house rule that if a player salty scoops to lethal damage, the damage effects still apply
Watching Ben have to kill people with commander dmg is an oddly satisfying conclusion to his anti-commander dmg campaign.

The pain Ben suffers from people not paying for Rhystic Study is the most relatable feeling I've had with any Commander TH-cam show. Every pod I play, I am the one pulling my hair out when I feel like I'm the only one trying to keep the tithe and study in-check.

Ben Brode's fervent attitude towards rhystic study and inexplicably hatred of Commander damage alongside all of the needling and prophetic visions from Olivia make this such a charming game, was a very fun watch

This game was nothing but amazing. The rage of Ben, the wittiness of Brian, the slight jabs of Olivia and the steady but funny build up of Chris was just masterful and truly what Commander literally at home is all about.

After winning a game against a deck that was at a triple digit life total, I believe in Commander Damage
As a certified Commander Damage Hater, I think there is a place for it, and I understand why it's 21 (the original Elder Dragons were all 7 power so it was three unblocked attacks), but this game, while hilarious, was honestly a good example of why having it be below the starting life total seems ... off. The number needs to exist, but even if (in keeping the original spirit) it was 21 damage AND combat damage on three different turns, it would eliminate some of the feels bad moments that Voltron style decks can bring.
@@jklharris As time and design marches forward that certainly makes sense to me.
@@jklharris Hard disagree, there is so much removal in the game these days that can easily deal with voltron, and ton to shut down a commander focused deck.
21 commander dmg is fine, the argument for infect being more than 10 though i give some weight.

I love this show so much. It’s fun and goofy while still respecting its audience by understanding that we don’t need cards like Steve or swiftfoot boots read out loud
Bonus points for Olivia’s just pure Goblin energy half of the time here.
Commander damage is necessary or life gain gets out of control. You'd need to win by combo every game or have a plan B like infect bc you never know when somebody will just extend the game 3 hours by gaining 40 life.
Voltron almost NEVER wins. And if you Magic influencers keep complaining about a thing that maybe killed you 15 times in over 10 years of playing Magic, it's gonna murder a whole strategy that's already an underdog.

My Ghired deck runs Drizzt, Bruenor, Catti-Brie and Wulfgar.
Creature tokens, equipment, +1/+1 counters and attack effects is a challenging mix.
Honestly I'm sort of with Ben on commander damage being stupid... I'm also with him on paying the 1 even if everybodys playing low power decks with how much it pumps that single person up to just sort of have anything they want to do more or less anything.
That all being said, commander damage is *okay* even if it's kinda dumb.
Ben is a national treasure and must be protected at all costs.
While it is hilarious, it truly boggles the mind that Ben would play a Skullbriar deck WITHOUT commander damage. That's basically the entire point of playing it as a commander.
Brian kept forgetting to lose life to his lands!
Happens on the first land (he doesn't change the tablet but they change the score in post-production)
And at 35:53 with the Stomping Ground, where they forgot even at post.

Question ? When the psychosis crawler was played and then activated the archivist when you discarded your hand, doesn’t that take his power down to zero before you draw or is it all coming into effect as a state base effect completing the ability of that card it was my understanding I thought that the psychosis crawler would die before you draw your cards, because his P/Twould be at zero anybody somebody please let me know if I am correcting this or can give me an explanation
I do love the pre nerf icy manipulator. Takes me back. Almost as cold as killing someone with their own commander damage.

ame back from the clutch three times on MTG Arena lol, once 1 life vs 24 life opponent (Best game ever BTW) ... , another had 9 poison counters, barely won, and the last 1 life and dude quit at 7 life lol. got pics to show... never give up folks! I Hate that he died before I could play him in a game. Thank You Shelden Menery for bringing us commander.
Amazing episode as always!! I still think the vindicate should've destroyed Maze of Ith so Ben would've been forced to kill Chris, perhaps. With the doves and kik-jiki rhinos Brian could've killed both Ben & Olivias with a bit of luck (depending what he had on hand)!!
