Visiting a live performance of Babymetal is something you will never forget. After the show there is simply no roof left, just four walls and a smoking pit. And dazed stragglers everywhere with the same crazy smile on their faces, that just doesn't wear off. A true witness account here.
This was the first song and video I had ever seen of Babymetal. My initial reaction was "WTF?"... but before the video could end, I was mesmerized, and a fan.

The best Metal song ever about eating too much chocolate! It really is a mixture of 50% Kawaii cuteness and 50% in-yer-face Metal. You're definitely a Babymetal fan when you keep saying after every song (Karate, Headbanger, Megitsune, Road of Resistance and now Death in your case) "That is my favourite Babymetal song"! We all do it - I have over 40 favourites! If you want to see the Kami Band and the girls on full power, then maybe try this little gem from the Black Night Legend concert, which features a solo each from both guitarists, the bassist and the drummer and then the girls come on and do some amazing choreo and call-and-response vocals to a HeavyAF/ DnB/Punk Metal song about yet another subject that other Metal bands have so far failed to address, the game of Hide and Seek. Q: *Why did it take over 10 years for most babymetal fans to think this was serious music?* Me, for one, have been in the entertainment business, all my life. I had heard about BM around 2010-2012 from one of their managers, They wanted me to promote one of their songs on my music based TH-cam channel. I took a quick look at their video and thought it was some kind of joke, as... back then, they had NO live metal band, and were lucky enough to draw a whopping 200 people at their shows. I forgot about doing the promotion ( HUGE MISTAKE) & woke up about 2 months ago, when I just happened to click onto Bablymetal live at at sonisphere 2014 uk. I could not believe how stupid I was not to pick up on that then. They were also on late night TV here with Stephen Cobert back in 2015 Again, I missed out on that. I have do doubt in my mind, they are the best "live act" I have ever seen. They are like QUEEN & BLUE MAN GROUP together on steroids !
This was my first intro to them. Didn't grab me. Followed by karate. Didn't grab me. Headbanger finally did and now as a fan I have been able to go back and appreciate these songs that I initially didn't enjoy
One point about BABY METAL: Su-Metal is only 16 years old at this concert, her birthday was on December 20th the concert happened on December 21st, also Yuimetal and Moametal were only 14 years old. The performance level is at the top of any metal or rock band To understand this concert you should react to the following songs: 1 Ave Marie that is the opening of the show, this is very seldom reacted to, but it shows how important is the statue in the back ground is. 2. The closing song of the show that is DETH. This is the most amazing performance that I ever washed. I remember it well. It was 2015 and I had just watched this strange ass video from a band in Japan called LadyBaby. This popped up in my suggestions, so I clicked on it! At this time it had about 90,000 views! Been a fan ever since that moment!

I love that you forgot about this for so long because it gave you a chance to experience BABYMETAL fully before seeing their most known (I don't necessarily say popular) video. This is the video most people react to first because it has so many views, or it is what people suggest to mess with other people because of the "WTF am I watching?!" vibe you get if this is the first video you watch. When people see this as the first video, they are either intrigued enough (or get enough people to suggest something else) to check out more, or they immediately take them as a gimmick and don't bother going any further, which is a shame. You make a good point about the difference in sound and look between the band and the girls and how it isn't usual, but works. Many people seeing this video as their first exposure will hear all that and see the girls and the topic of the song and, again, say "they're a gimmick, I'm out." I'm thankful you got through so many songs of theirs before hitting this one, so while it was definitely different to you, you understood that this isn't all they are about or their normal sound. As for the video itself, you are 100% correct that this is from the same show as "BABYMETAL Death" and (if you watched this version) "Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!!" live. This is the Legend 1997 show that was performed in December 2013, the day after Su-Metal turned 16, and had 8,000 in attendance. The "band" in the skeleton outfits are just actors pretending to play. It wasn't until the encore that the Kami Band came out to play. This song still gets played during live performances because of it being their most well-known song. It's a lot of fun if you just embrace it for what it is.
If having a gimmick disqualifies you from being Heavy Metal, then the same could be said about Slipknot, Gwar, Rammstein,... With all the groups out there, you almost need a gimmick for people to notice you. Keeping them afterwards is the hard part, and I think BabyMetal has done quite well in that department 🤘
To some extent I can understand people that call BABYMETAL a gimmick, as long as they just know "Gimme Chocolate". It is indeed not the most sophisticated and serious song. On the other hand, one can hardly deny the entertaining quality and uniqueness, which is not a small feat and something that some bands never achieve. A few years ago, I would have lunged at your throat for comparing music I like to Blümchen, but BABYMETAL have really opened my mind. You like what you like. If there's one person on the planet that the music makes happy, it's worth existing. (But still, Blümchen, really?) :-P
This whole "gimmick" argument they use is something I'll never understand. 90% of bands in Metal these days have more gimmick than BABYMETAL does in my opinion. Slipknot has a gimmick for over 25 years now, I don't see anybody calling them out for it. Death and Black Metal in itself is a gimmick, so is Death- and Metalcore to a certain extent. And the Blümchen reference cracked me up. I thought he was gonna say Scooter or something like that and then he comes with that ridiculous comparison (not that Scooter wouldn't have been ridiculous) :D
If you want some new try the Japanese band Crossfaith, metalcore with some techno. Try Crossfaith - Countdown To Hell (Official live music video) or System X Vip / Xeno live.
This is a lot of peoples' introduction to BABYMETAL and it really isn't the best song for a lot of them to hear first. It goes down a lot better once, like you, they have heard more of what they are all about and how they mix things up. For some people, as a first exposure, this song is just too weird and they can't get their heads round Yui's and Moa's voices or how the metal and pop elements just seem too much like polar opposites and are not blended like they are in pretty much all of their other songs.
I think if this would be a live performance a lot of people wouldn't have these problems. I don't really like the song on the album from a music standpoint, but I think it's one of the coolest ones live because the metal isn't that much "turned down" in the chorus, the Kamis add so much to the song and there's not so much electronic vibes when they perform it, at least in my eyes (ears).
