Bad Steering Rack and Pinion

- My 1997 Geo metro was making a small knocking / rattling sound when I went over gravel. It turns out it was my steering rack. Hopefully this video helps you diagnose your problem!
Just to clarify this is a manual rack with no power assist. Commonly found on older smaller vehicles. However checking this part of the rack for play will be similar for almost any vehicle.
Checkout Rockauto.com for parts!
Thanks for the video. I just replaced damn near my entire front suspension just to find this exact issue after I had finished. Only video I've seen that clarifies the issue.
Same thing happened with me 😔
Same here....so if we have this clunk problem with the rack we would need to replace the whole thing?😭
Yeah it is a very sneaky and rarely addressed issue. Glad I could help!
Same bro
@@chapsonco7891 what was the original issue?
I work for a company that specialises in fixing all kinds of steering rack. What you are showing in your video is 1 of 2 things.
1) if the play is on the end of your rack that has the pinion then it may just be a case of adjusting the slipper pad to tighten the play.
2) if the play is on the opposite end to your pinion then the rack needs stripping down completely so that you can replace a plastic bush that keeps it tight.
So when I check from three and 9 o’clock I’m able to move the rack in-N-Out does that mean the rack is bad but the steering wheel moves it’s not a lot ??
I have the same problem in my car. The sound has given me a lot of problems. Could you give me your phone number to ask you some questions. you are an expert in zippers, please friend
So what is the cubism you work for that rebuilds steering racks?
How would you adjust that on a 09 Acadia ? On the driver side ?
Where can I buy parts to rebuild mine 2019 jeep Cherokee latitude electric power steering
I wish it was just the inner tie rod. :(
That’s what that was he replaced it it came with a new inner he actually did more work then he had to
Me to😅😅😅I am gonna check mine in a few days
Wow.... it is the same sound on my ford escape 2014... there is no videos explaining like the way you did, thanks, and GOD BLESS YOU!!!
Damn bro i couldnt figure out where that noise was coming from only had that noise while going over a bump or over 45mph it started to make that same sound i took everything apart after seeing this video and realized that its the same issue indeed
Rack and pinion has a adjustable nut tighten it just a bit until the movement gone ( i has the same issue and that is what i did and now its fixed )
How do I find that nut?
Hi, where that Nut is located at exactly? -
Is this the thrust piece?
What do you mean
My PT Cruiser is like that. It's been like that for about 10 years now. I'll fix it eventually...
Did u had a symptom of steering wheel wobble or car pulling to one side? Thanks
Following
thats new waoo....
next time works on suspension must check this too
Thanks for posting, it was helpful to me.
Edit, i have a 2007 ford p/u just started turning hard, but months ago I heard that "pley" in the cab, i thought it was a little u joint in the steering shaft, thanks for posting.
I've been looking for a video to help me with some thing thanks
thanks for posting this video
Thank you for your insight , pratically explaining the suspension issue !
Hey there! Did you fix it ? If yes, please tell me how ?
Does this play cause tyre wear
What caused this? I think mine is bad too, I feel a shift in my steering wheel when I accelerate or brake hard, over certain bumps, and with the wheel turned all the way in either direction.
First things to check are tie rods, wheel bearings and ball joints. Jack up the front wheels and see if there is any play when you grab the wheels at 3o'clock and 9'oclock, play in this direction means there is an issue with steering components (tie rods and maybe rack and pinion). Play in 12o'clock and 6o'clock represents a bad ball joint. If there is play all around the wheel then it is most likely a bad wheel bearing. ChrisFIx and Scotty Kilmer have good videos on these issues. Good luck!
You hit a big curb!
What were the symptoms??
I have a Ford Taurus with the same issue. I don't know if I should try to rebuild it or just get a new one..
Dam.... i do not want to get underneath my car
How to repair this kind of problem? I had the same one with my Ranger XLT
I have this problem but it moves more in and out and only on the driver side. Which Considering the rack is a solid bar, makes no sense.
I have the same issue on my Tucson, the steering wheel just keeps on vibrating and clunking on bumps especially when you turn the wheel and you hit a bump at the same time.
Did you get this issue solved?
did you figure it out
@@hernanmurillo8925 I did, turns out my rack and pinion is busted. I had it repaired using a kit but its didn't last very long so I decided to have the entire assembly replaced. Cost me around 270 for the assembly. I'll also have my steering stem checked soon.
Exactly my issues too
Could it be the following?(saw this on other videos): The flexible coupling (or bushing?)(563152K000FFF flexible coupling 5EA for Hyundai & Kia) needs replacing inside the steering wheel pump.
Does tightening the preload screw help eliminate this noise? Is it danger to drive with this noise?
What was the outcome? Fix. What was symptoms driving
When I turn right it makes a loud noise what can that mean and my wheel steering is hard
Power steering fluid
Looks just like mine. Bushing or bearing? Replaced inner outer tie rods and control arms before finding this issue. Stupid me. New racks in the garage motivation is gone ahaha
I'm in the same boat buddy. Good luck to you I'm gonna finish tackling it tomorrow 🤞
I have also been wondering where a similar noise was coming from for a while now, and then my power steering has fully gone out recently. I am already planning on replacing the EPS belt and possibly the motor if needed, and if I can find one, because the closest junk yard doesn't have any ram's with EPS. And a new one is around $2,000! from the videos I've seen it looks like your issue is the belt, but I'm not too sure. I hope you found a used rack for a good price and that it has served you well though!
Put a melon gasket inside it? 😂
I put a rubber. Roud with grease on a Toyota 2009
i got a ls400 with steering stiff hard to turn can anyone help out what to replace first ? pump ?or rack
I hear mine when I'm driving and breaking
I have a mercedes w204 rear wheel drive....I charged all the arms...including inner and outer tie rods...even the front springs...I still have a steering wheel rumble on turns...after few weeks jacked car up held front wheel at 9 and 3 position wobbled it violently and I hear the same sound as this video...car booked tomarrow for a yoke bush replacement
What did you end up changing? My w204 steering is abit loose
@@webstermfusi2163 full steering rack
Did this cause the whole vehicle to vibrate?
i think you can adjust that. tighten the pressure on the rack.. you can try that first
My rack and pinion is bad the mechanics say when I look at it the boot is torn and it is leaking when I turn left it makes a noise when I turn right it makes a noise not too bad sometimes but at slow speeds and it does not Veer to the left and does not Veer to the right on the highway neither but it does have a little Slack
I read that and read sack
What kind of truck?
What symptoms were you having?
Gave no phxcks to reply hahahaha
Looks like you wanting free info didn't work hahaha
I fix that bye puttin a small metal plate. Betwern the metal and the bushin. Ihave done it a couple of times
I have a 02 Mustang GT and it clunks only when I hit the brakes. I can't figure out what it is.
Yea it might be because the extra play is shaking the rotor while you’re braking and your car doesn’t have a screw to secure the rotor down
you can tighten it, just dont over tighten or you completely ruin it
Hi, did you hear any clunking or popping sound from car’s front end while driving ?
I was wondering the same thing. I just replaced all the ball joints, control arms, sway bar links, sway bar bushings, and I still have a sound coming from my front end. I’m starting to think the clunking is coming from the rack and pinion.
@@Tomy_Honk i got my steering rack replaced. And yes this knocking sound is from rack and pinion ! A video link for your reference - explains the reaso n for such sounds- th-cam.com/video/Gt4gPYNPkm0/w-d-xo.html
@@Tomy_Honk how it go I did the same repair on my honda and I'm thinking it my be my rack and pinion
I've been having this same sound in my manual Nissan Tiida
Have you solved this issue? ANDREW
Sounds like a boost leak, no?
need a 11$ plastic bushing....but the job🤬 better change all the rack if you remove it
The bolts have lost the rubber gasket it has around them that hold it together! Look at them.
Bad sector shaft brg, but usually not available without new rack
Kindly advice on what to with this problem?is it looseness that can be tightened or replacing whole rack?
rebuild or replace the rack
What kind of noise do you get while driving? I've checked wheels and tyres, balancing and alignment, wheel bearings and tie rods but the vibration is still there. Mine is like a humming sound with mild vibration at low speeds, does not get worse at high speeds, felt accelerating and decelerating.
Im having that issue too. Vibration when accelerating. I changed cv axles, flushed transmission fluid, 2 new transmission mounts, 2 new subframe mounts, tires rotation, and alignment, and still the same thing. Im now noticing a little leak on inner tie rod, and im thinking that its causing the vibration. I dont know what to do. Did you fixed it in your car?
@@OniVideo24 Turns out the wheel bearing hubs also needed replacement. Problem solved.
I have the same issue. I'm wondering if its even worth repairing.
Hi what did you do? Should you change it immediately?
@@guille20089 I haven't replaced it yet, since I don't drive that car much. I would recommend getting it replaced sooner than later tho. Would not be good if it fails while driving.
@@jpskiskate2000 hank you for answering my doubt 🤝
Honestly since your vehicle is so old just replace everything. You'll be happier
I have the same problem in my car. I don't know what to do. Please help…
can I fix my rack and pinion or do I need to put a new rack and pinion?
New one
I have the same exactly noise
I have this same problem replaced everything only problem now is nobody has a rack and pinion for my car 😒
Same
Same for Jeep Commander in Australia.
Was it a bad rack and pinion ?
maybe my car is having the same problem because I changed everything but that noice is still on my polo vivo 🤔🤔
Same problem
Its the upper pinion bearing
I have the same problem, what did you find out?
The rack and pinion was bad ended up getting a junk yard unit.
@@chapsonco7891thanks same problem will change it just was not sure
U might find a good use one but I just bought a new one
@@hubertjohnson4154 what did it cost u?
Relacing the bearing holding the pinion could solve the issue
If I go through the trouble of taking a rack out. Especially on some cars. I am replacing it not repairing it 100%
Nothing wrong with repairing it. A rebuilt OEM rack is still WAY WAY better then a new aftermarket. My mini cooper new OEM rack is hundreds...rebuild kit is $50 bucks. If you don't know how to rebuild it, then you lose our and just have to pay out for new ... @@codyfisher3706
How is it? Repaired or replaced?
Replaced
Just need new bushings sir
Your inner tie rod was worn almost out too! The tie rod arms shouldnt be that easy to move like flopping freely!
You're right. This was a number of years ago now I have learnt a lot since then!
@@chapsonco7891 I have to wait until tomorrow to get a bigger pair of channel locks or adjust wrench or vice grips bc the nut that holds one of the mounting bolts to the frame & rack & pinion
🤔🤔🧐🧐
what symptoms did u have
Clunking
nylon bushings worn out. common on electric racks
This one is a manual rack. No electric or power assist! But you're right it is probably internal bushings.
solving the bushing problem is very complicated?
I have the same problem en my car😔
@@vicentejara4906 why is it hard? Do you have an electric steering?
Does it make sense when you replace, mine is an electric but has this issue, its giving me headache
I just had to change mine cause power steering fluid was coming out. I'd replace it if you're planning on keeping a while. New tie rods new rack and an alignment
The rack doesnt come with the rods?
@@samuraijose817 No! Tie rods are their own parts. And you may end up needing both the inner and outer tie rods on your front end. So it’s best to just replace all the parts and get an alignment.
Rack is the issue.
Just have to tighten the steering yoke screw to stop the noise
How on a 09 Acadia driver side
@@CHB_98how the fuck do you expect people who don’t have your car to just know? 🤦
Just screw in the pre-tensioner. It’s all you have to do to fix this. My FJ cruiser is doing exactly the same thing and it happened after I hit a bad bump on that side. The only issue is is what size for the countersunk Bolt do I need to use and where to buy it?
I just hit a really bad pothole and now my entire steering is stiff. It doesn't pull in either direction so the alignment still seems intact but it won't hold any power steering fluid. Do you think it's the pre-tensioner or the rack and pinion?
@@Yaaqov100 leaking power steering fluid somewhere
My tie rod end is broke can be replaced
James Tharpe yes it can be replaced. Easy to do yourself.
could also be a tie rod on the other side thats got play in it
You are supposed to have a little play in there. Just replace your tie rod its definitely bad plus you are likely low on fluids in there so it will get bad eventually lol and take it to like Firestone and they'll diagnose it for 10 dollars and you can buy the parts somewhere cheaper and fix tourself
Not that much play. And definitely not a knocking sound.
10 dollars last time kt was a 100
This one is a manual rack (no power assist) other than grease there are no fluids. Once replaced with a new unit no more knocking sound!
@@chapsonco7891 same problem on my elantra 11$ bushing....and a lot of work
Damn maybe mine is messed up my car shakes when going from first gear
Probably drive line angle meaning motor mounts failing
Cause you're rack gets really hard when trying to turn or it kicks back
The only way is to get a new or used rack
The junkyard wtfart Lol naaa niggaa you need a new one ☝🏼 Lol
Its bad bro ...get new one
